Sola – 02

OP: “colorless wind” by Aira Yuki – Wow, I am pretty impressed with the OP. I love the use of actual photos of the sky and GCI. Other than that, we get a lot of shots of Matsuri, and the other characters of course.

Picking up from where we were in the first episode, Yorito realizes that it is Matsuri in the church. The man turns to Yorito, and Matsuri takes the chance to grab a candle holder. She starts to run, and the man throws his sword at her, but misses. Yorito is surprised when he sees Matsuri jump extremely high and break through the window.

After the OP rolls, we see the doll and Aona look in the direction of the church, as if they sensed something had happened. The man pushes Yorito out of the way and runs outside to find an exhausted Matsuri. Matsuri touches some support beams and causes them to collapse. The man dodges it, then asks if she was someone that Yorito knows. He doesn’t reply, and the man says that if Yorito doesn’t know then he should leave. Matsuri is hiding in the bushes, and she uses the same power she used on the beams to break off a piece of brick to throw at the man. He responds by throwing a pole at her, causing her to jump into the air. She throws the rock at him but he deflects it with his sword. He then throws an arrow at Matsuri that causes an explosion of light that causes Matsuri to fall into the distance. Upon seeing this, Yorito runs to go after her, but the man stops him. He tells him that she is not human, but a calamity of night. However, Yorito runs off anyways. The man starts to give chase but stops when he sees the doll, who he addresses as Mayuko.

After arriving near some graves, Yorito notices Matsuri’s hat, and turns to find her passed out on the ground. He brings her to his house, and lays her on a bed. He notices something grey on her hand, but when he touches it he freaks out. Matsuri wakes up, glad to see Yorito, but passes back out. When Yorito wakes up in the morning, he finds Matsuri downstairs looking at his pictures of clouds. She thanks him for saving her, and says that she will do anything she can to repay him. She suggests that she will make some food, and runs into the kitchen.

Back at the grave site, the man is observing dust on the ground, disappointed that she got away again. At school, Yorito is absent. The girls wonder if it is just his obsession with clouds again, but Mana somehow has a different feeling. Matsuri wonders if it is ok for Yorito to ignore his calls at the house. He replies that it is, because it would only cause worry. Yorito notices that Matsuri has no idea how to cook food, when she tries to work the oven. She gets ready to kick it but Yorito stops her again. They find themselves in the living room afterwards. Matsuri suggests that they should talk. Yorito finds that he is only talking about himself. He starts to ask about Matsuri, but stops when he remembers the circumstances. She tells him that its ok since he already saw what happened. She turns off the light and puts her finger in the sunlight that is coming through the curtains. She retracts it in pain as the same particles from before fall from her skin, explaining that she isn’t human.

At the hospital, Aona is telling a nurse that she doesn’t need the medicine that she is trying to have her take. Koyori makes the nurse leave by telling her that someone was calling for her. She apologizes to Aona for doing such a thing, but Aona replies by giving her another origami bird. Mana arrives alone, and Aona wonders where Yorito is.

Yorito and Matsuri are at his house watching TV. She explained that she is a ‘Yakabito’, a monster that would die if touched by light. She tells him not to worry because she would leave soon. She tells him that for the hundreds of years she lived, she has never seen the real sky. As she starts to leave, Yorito tries to stop her. Matsuri says that Yorito would someday hate her if she stayed with him. Yorito receives a phone call from Mana saying that Aona said that she would go home if Yorito didn’t go to the hospital. He tells Matsuri to wait because he has things he wants to talk about. She promises to him, but as he leaves she says the words ‘Bye Bye’.

After rushing to the hospital he is relieved to see Aona, but she simply tells him she is hungry. At a resturaunt, the man is eatin seafood with Mayuko. She wants him to explain why Matsuri got away. He tells her again that a boy got in the way, and she escaped.

On the way home, Yurito thinks about Mana at he hospital, who was worried that he hasn’t been answering his phone or visiting the hospital recently. He notices that the lights are out in his house, and quickly dashes in searching for Matsuri. There is a leaving message on the picture she was looking at in the morning. He begins to run out thinking she is already gone, but notices a light in his room. Matsuri is laying on his bed looking at his ceiling that is painted to look like the sky. She tells him that something like that isn’t fair, and wonders if that is what the sky is like. Yorito tells her that it is much more amazing. Matsuri imagines the sky again, and Yorito promises that he would show her the real sky one day.

Impression:

So we find out that Matsuri has the power to make things rust when she touches them. We also see what happens to her when she touches light. I liked the whole brother-sister complex with Aona and Yorito. Aona just wanted to see Yurito, and made a simple comment when he arrived. I think this show is going in a much more fantasy direction than a lot of people expected, but I really don’t think that is a bad thing. I expect that Matsuri won’t be able to see the sky until the end of the series, and more characters will start to play bigger roles (I suspect Aona in particular). Looking forward to more development in the plot of this beautiful animation.
