Devil May Cry – 01

The first episode of Devil May Cry is just what you would expect it to be. There’s a lot of shooting and slashing from Dante, and lots of demon action.

Short Summary:

Dante is given a job to escort the girl, Patty Lowell, to her destination in a given amount of time. As long as she can make it to the mansion in time, she will receive her family’s inheritance instead of the group of brothers who are also after it. Along the way, Dante faces several demons. Dante and Patty eventually check into a hotel at night, but Patty is drawn to a voice that she believes to be her mother’s. Once she reaches the opera house, Patty finds that it is actually a demon waiting for her. Dante shows up to save her, taking out the demons that have showed up. The next day, the real Patty Lowell shows herself to the brothers, claiming that the other is a fake. She requests preparations for her inheritance, but one of the brothers turns into a demon and attacks her. After Dante comes in to destroy him, the older woman offers to take Patty in to atone for what she has done. Patty later shows up at the Devil May Cry, giving it a new look.

Full Summary:

Dante walks into a bar and orders a strawberry sundae from the bartender. Of course, he is told that they aren’t serving kids. Dante mentions that he has heard some interesting rumors, while two people are playing cards behind him. After one of them mentions a royal flush, gunshots let out as the two are revealed to be demons in disguise. One of them bites Dante’s arm, but his sword flies through one of the windows, and uses it to finish them off. He thrusts the sword through the door to kill the bartender, and uses it to exit. The bartender gets back up as a demon to attack Dante, but he turns around calmly to finish him off with a gunshot. Later at the Devil May Cry, Dante orders a pizza while reading a magazine. In the room is also a girl named Patty, who is playing pool. A man named Morrison, who works with Dante, tells him that Patty is not a regular girl. She is going to inherit a fortune, and they have been given the job to escort her. At first Dante refuses, but is forced to do it after losing a bet with Morrison. Before they all leave the house, Morrison throws Dante a guitar case, telling him not to forget about the live. Patty tells Dante that she will attend his live since nobody else would go to see it, as he drives. Patty remembers the picture of a girl she saw inside, and asks Dante if she would attend his live. She then tells him how his car is unfit for a lady, when Dante pushes her down because of a voice he hears in his head. He pulls out his handgun and fires it forward at a demon on the side of a truck. The truck continues to dive toward them after the demon dies, but Dante dodges it.

Inside a mansion, someone discusses a letter about Patty Lowell with his older brother. If she arrives to the mansion in time, she would recieve the heritage instead of them. After boarding a train with Patty, Dante notices that she is looking at a picture on her necklace. She tells him that it is of her mother, who she has no memories of. A man compliments Patty and her necklace, and asks if he can sit with them. Dante notices that there are plenty of empty seats on the train, but Patty gladly lets him sit down. However, she is shocked when he falls over dead. Many of the passengers and a guard come to look, wanting to hear from Dante. Dante describes all of the passengers on the train, but says there is one more as a demon looks through the window. Dante shoots at it, and finishes it off inside the train. Afterwards the police arrive, Dante walks away with a worried Patty. Back at the mansion, one of the men discusses with his brother his liking of a certain painting while they play chess. Dante orders a hotel room, while Patty becomes fascinated with a poster on the wall. She says that it is her mother, but Dante reminds her that she is dead, as they go to their room. Patty tells Dante that she overheard that her mother did not really die from an illness, but was told that to protect her. She tells him that even if she was given money to buy a lot of things that she wanted, what she really wanted was to see her parents. She asks if this is weird, but Dante tells her that anyone would want to.

Patty hears a voice singing, and leaves in the middle of the night. Dante asks the manager where she is, and shoots at the poster to reveal that it was actually a large moth. Dante then convinces him to drive him to her location. On the way there, Dante asks the manager who asked him to do this, but he won’t tell. Patty opens the doors to an opera room to see her mother on the stage singing. She runs to the stage and hugs her, but looks up to see that it is actually a demon. Shots let out as Dante walks in to save her. He uses the stage props to block her view from his fight with the demons, as the manager sneaks behind her. A shot lets out through the props, as Dante will not let him touch her. Blood pours throughout the stage, as Dante finishes off the demons. As the sun rises, the brothers notice that the time is up. A blonde headed girl walks in, who calls herself Patty Lowell. She tells them that the child is a fake. She wants preparations made for her heritage, but one of the brothers transforms into a demon. He strikes the two other brothers and charges at the woman, but Dante appears to stop him. He opens the guitar case, to reveal that it actually contains his sword. He uses it to finish the demon off, then prepares to leave. However, the woman asks him to let her take in Patty. Later at the Devil May Cry, Dante comes out from the shower to find lots of girly things in the room. He wonders where his strawberry sundae has gone, and finds that Patty has helped herself to it.

ED: “I’ll be your home” by 及川リン – It’s pretty obvious that this series will be licenced quick and be marketing to American viewers after airing. The ED is in english, as are a lot of the credits themselves. Other than that, the ED is pretty standard. We get a lot of panning of Dante, and flashes of the other characters of the series.

Preview: Highway Star

Impression:

I really wasn’t expecting the Devil May Cry premier, since the series doesn’t actually air until later in the season. Maybe I’m just not great at keeping up with the news huh? ^. Well the first episode was pretty fun, but it really felt like it had a video game plot. The majority of the episode was spent on action sequences, full of Dante’s shooting and lots of demon blood. The animation is great though, as Madhouse is taking care of it. I will definitely be watching this show, but I’m not too sure about blogging it. I’m really not good with shows with lots of jargon yet, which is why I didn’t blog Darker than Black and other shows this season. I’m also not the most hardcore Devil May Cry fan in the world. I played the first game and loved it, but I’m just not much of a gamer. I’ll make my decision after it actually starts airing.

The screens are horrible quality, but I’ll get new ones up when I get a better raw (probably when the actual premier airs).

Watching the actual premier over the crappy web preview made me like this episode a lot more. With the added ED and preview, I’m really getting excited about this show. I’ll probably pick it up, and do my best with the summary. I mean, I seem to manage Touka Gettan right? ^.

It felt like a pretty average action series, doesn’t seems to live up to its counterpart from the gaming side. But I’d give it a few more episodes to maybe warm things up

I was a bit confused by the end of the show. Was the older blonde woman, Patty’s mother?

The older woman was the real Patty Lowell who was to get the inheritance. The Patty that Dante was looking over was just someone with the same name, that the older woman used to draw the attention away from her. Afterwards, the older woman took in Patty to attone for what she did, which is why Patty comes back to the Devil May Cry with all the girly gifts.

This series has just ended in broadcast in Japan, and all of the dvds have not even been released yet. It has been licenced by ADV films already however, so look forward to their releases in the US sometime in the future.
