10 Love Comedies that you may or may not know

This season has been full of love comedies (just take a look at what I’m blogging), but there have been many others throughout anime history. This is probably the genre I watch the most, only rivaled by slice of life. Here is a list of love comedies that you may or may not know.

1. DearS

A race of beautiful aliens have crash landed on earth, and now live with humans in Japan. Takeya saves a DearS on the way home one day, and she chooses him as her master. Ren, who is different from other DearS, tries her best to serve Takeya as his slave, but he believes the aliens are only trying to brainwash him.

Ok, so this has been my favorite love comedy forever. Maybe I have a strange obsession with master/slave relationships, but I’ll go super fanboy mode for Ren and her love of melon-pan. Oh, and NOT a chobits rip off kthxbye!!

2. Mahoraba ~Heartful days~

Shiratori, who hopes to write children’s books for a living, returns to Narutakisou to attend school. He quickly finds that the others living there have very unique personalities, and the landlady he once knew can be more than herself.

If you didn’t like this show you’re crazy. That’s all I’m saying! Mmmmmm supaiiii~~~!!!

3. Love Hina

Keitaro is a rounin that has been trying to get into Tokyo University because of a promise he made with someone as a child. After failing twice, he is sent to live in his Grandmother’s hotel. However, it has been turned into an all girls boarding house that he is now forced to manage.

This was probably the show that got me into love comedies. Although not as popular as Negima by the same creator Ken Akamatsu, this show is well known for being Yui Horie’s big break for her role as Naru Narusegawa.

4. School Rumble

The delinquent Harima Kenji has always been in love with Tsukamoto Tenma, but can’t bring himself to confess to her. Little does he know, Tenma already has someone else in mind.

Probably more of a parody of the typical school romance story, School Rumble always has me asking for more. We’ll probably be waiting ages for the promised third season.

5. Code Geass

One day, Lelouch receives a special power from the girl C.C. Now he plans to use this power along with his wit to have things his way, all while hiding his secret from the other girls.

This love comedy has mechas!!! Come on…the last time that happened was with Full Metal Panic right? This show has everything: the classmate who can’t confess her feelings, the flirty class president, the sister (BLIND by the way), the girl that is in love with his other identity, the girl with SPECIAL POWERS, and the yuri girl who humps tables. You could even say there is a yaoi interest with Suzaku. Oh yea, and amnesia is the new moe.

6. Kamisama Kazoku

Samatarou, the son of god, lives on earth with his family so that he can learn to be a better god in the future. Samatarou’s childhood friend, the angel Tenko, has been assigned to look over him. Samatarou’s life changes after falling in love at first sight with the transfer student Kumiko, but how does this make Tenko feel?

I instantly fell in love with this show after watching it. It’s unique animation and story telling just make it stand out from the rest. Just watch it. You’ll like it.

7. Midori no Hibi

Seiji is a high school delinquent who has never had a girlfriend because of his scary appearance. He despairs that the only companion that he will ever have is his right hand. This is proven true when his hand is replaced with the girl Midori Kasugano, who admits to have had a crush on him for the last three years.

I remember marathoning this show in one sitting, because it was so funny that I almost fell out of my chair during every episode. The concept is just so ridiculous. I mean the girl actually turns into his hand.

8. Karin

Karin is not an ordinary vampire in that instead of being a blood sucker, she is a blood maker. She also attends school like a normal person. Her life goes along fine until the transfer student, Kenta Usui, shows up to change her life.

Who doesn’t like vampires? This show is funny because it parodies the typical vampire conceptions. Karin also has a very interesting vampire family (Anju ftw). Kenta seriously does have freaking weird eyes though.

9. Onegai Teacher/Onegai Twins

Kei finds out that his new teacher at school is an alien. Because of this, he is forced to marry her to keep her secret.

Karen and Miina both show up at Maiku’s house on the same day, with the same picture that he has. One of them is his sister, but the other is a total stranger. With no way to prove which is which, Maiku allows both of them to stay with him until they can find out.

I put these two together, even though the stories really don’t have much to do with each other. For some reason, these two shows always came off of me as the shows everyone associated love comedies with, without actually having seen them. That’s probably just me though.

10. Inukami

Inukami are dog spirits that fend off evil spirits along with their masters. Keita’s Inukami is Yoko, and although she is fully interested in him, he has the habit of only going after other girls.

Total parody. Also known as the anime with the naked men. You should check this out if you want a good laugh and something different from the typical love comedy. I’m still waiting for the movie. “Look mom, it’s an elephant!”

11. Yoake Mae Yori Ruri Iro Na -Crescent Love-

Princess Feena from the moon comes to stay with Tatsuya’s family to learn more about Earth’s customs. Although he has forgotten, Tatsuya met Feena as a child and made a promise to her.

Ok, Code Geass was obviously a joke so here’s the tenth. I think it’s pretty safe to say that this show was so bad that it was good. I mean the nose pinching? WTH was that! Oh, and the ending? Come on…that was just awesome.

Other mentions:

Zero no Tsukaima - Hmm, this was a love comedy wasn’t it…there’s so many fantasy aspects that you kind of forget that. It’s an awesome show, but just didn’t make my list. I think everybody knows about this show anyways.
Chobits - I liked it, but it honestly felt more like a slice of life than a love comedy.
Negima!/Negima!? - Yea, this can probably be considered a love comedy, but it feels more like a school comedy with lots of magic and perverted situations. Besides, I already mentioned it with Love Hina.
Ichigo 100% - I know there are so many people that love this show, but I just couldn’t get into it. Sorry.
Maburaho - I watched it half way through. Not really to my tastes so I gave it up. Maybe I’ll finish watching it eventually.
Today in Class 5-2 - This series is really great, but it’s like an OVA….and nobody likes OVAs right?
Ah! My Goddess - so was this show suppose to have a super onesan appeal or something? Not to my tastes.
Amaenaideyo/Amaenaideyo Katsu - yeaaaaaa………next.
Tsukuyomi Moon Phase - Currently stalled on this show like half way through. I do plan on finishing it when I have time, but is it really a love comedy? There’s like a lot of other stuff too right?
Tonagura - watched it all the way through, but nothing really stood out.
Tokimeki Memorial ~Only Love~ - watched half way before giving up. Might finish watching it later.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu - Mecha gone love comedy for real. I love FMP, and Fumoffu was no exception, but I just didn’t think it fit in the list.
REC - This show was pretty good but the episodes were really short and it really wasn’t that memorable.
Ai Yori Aoshi - another show that I don’t really think has that “love comedy” feel. Come to think of it, this show was actually pretty bad. I can’t believe I managed to watch it all.
He is my Master - I watched the first episode and dropped it because I didn’t like the art. I always hear that it is good though, so I’ll probably pick it back up eventually.
Futakoi/Futakoi Alternative - tried watching the first few episodes of both but gave up.
Ouran Host Club - Epic series, but again, felt to me more like a slice of life than a love comedy.
Tsuyokiss - I started to watch this, then stopped. I’d probably finish it if I had time, even though so many people say it’s bad.
Hanaukyo Maid Tai - I kinda felt like the love interest got pushed to the side in this show, so it came off more as just an ecchi anime. It was good though.
Happy Lesson/Happy Lesson Advance - Stupid.
Magikano - This was another show that I dropped after the first episode. People have said that it’s decent though, so I might pick it back up some day (doubtful).
Girls Bravo - I watched all of the first season and got half way through the second before deciding this show wasn’t any good. Noted for being Mamiko Noto’s boku role though.
Chocotto Sister - Is this suppose to be like imouto love? I only watched the first few episodes before putting this one on backlog.
Kage Kara Mamoru - This almost made my epic fail list but Yuuna probably saved it. I mean she sings the banana song. How awesome is that?
Hand Maid May - Was this a love comedy? I tried watching the first episode but the art was just too bad…it looked like the show was going to suck anyways.
Sister Princess/Sister Princess RePure - Also stopped watching after the first episode, but this show has two seasons? Someone tell me if this is actually worth watching.

Love Comedies of epic fail:

Lamune - Oh noes, the childhood friends who don’t realize their feelings. Oh, and the coma? Wow. (EDIT: Now that I remember, this isn’t really a “love comedy”. Oh well, I’m still gonna leave it here because it is so fail)
Final Approach - wth?
Futari Ecchi - um…border line soft core hentai. No thanks.
Guardian Hearts - Yea, this show was retarded.
Happy World - This one was too.
Green Green - bad….animation….eye….cancer….

I might have missed a few titles. My collection is pretty epic….at least I like to think it is.

This is not necessarily a favorites list, but more of a list of anime that stand out to me. I also left out a lot of titles that I didn’t think necessarily fit into the “love comedy” category. For example, I left out shows like Shuffle and Otoboku because I consider them to be more of harem/h-game adaption type shows. Also, although I do watch them, I left out any shoujo anime. Yea, they are love comedies too, but…I’m a guy. I haven’t watched many older series either (earlier than 2000), because I can’t stand bad animation.

So what do you think of these shows? I have a strange liking for love comedies, so if there are others that you think I should watch, please mention them. I even watch the really bad ones, as you’ve seen.

  3. Hinano June 14th, 2007 8:23 pm

Hehe I’ve heard/seen most of your list.
Sister princess is not a love comedy. Its a fanboy moe incest horrible show T__T

Yoake Mae is on the same crap level as Ramune for me, but mostly becuase of the shitty animation and predictable as shit plot.

And yes to like Dears you have to be a huge hooter fan or a bondage fan. XD I liked chobits more.

My recommendation to you not on your list: Trouble Chocolate. you seem to like the same crap I do so who knows maybe you’d like this one!

    pneoxian > I’ll try. :)

    JP > LOL.

Hinano > Yea, Crescent Love was seriously bad. So bad that I actually laughed a lot more than I should have. That’s why it’s on my list xD

I’ll check out Trouble Chocolate. I think we have some of the same tastes too. I actually went through your site quite a bit for references before putting this up. I still need to watch Sumomo and Love Getchu which have been on my backlog.

Nice to see that someone else gives high praises to Mahoraba.^_^

Sister princess was ok……Not the best, but certainly not the worst.

I guess I haven’t watched as many love comedies as I thought. Maybe I’ll give DearS a spin since you put it on the top of your list. I like Ren’s character design at least. :) Of the ones you mentioned I’ve only seen

FUMOFFU! which is all sorts of funny (I didn’t actually like the regular FMP series).

    Love Hina, which I liked.

I also saw all of Maburaho, but the best thing about it was the dvd covers.

    Chobits.

  7. Deranged June 15th, 2007 3:16 am

Seen all except for two… and seriously speaking, I always thought just a few tweaks and Code Geass could easily be a romantic comedy XD

  8. Sailor Enlil June 15th, 2007 6:56 am

JP> hehehe nice catch. But look a little higher (at the chest level) and you’ll see that one of her boobs is actually sticking out if you look really carefully (and kinda being groped by cheeze-kun)

  9. nahzor June 15th, 2007 9:41 am

It’s an old one and the art dated, but try to look up Kimagure Orange Road.

  10. Totali June 15th, 2007 10:26 am

jopchan121 > Mahoraba is so win. “Shiratori-san~!” and yea, I dunno if I can commit myself to watching Sister Princess if it’s only going to be mediocre.

super rats > You should! The majority of people compare it to chobits, and like chobits more though. It’s more of a personal favorite I guess. I think DearS is underrated.

Deranged > Dude, Code Geass WAS a love comedy.

    Sailor Enlil > I lol’ed….again.

nahzor > k, I might check it out. I really have a hard time getting into old shows though, just because of the art/animation. (ANN has Kimagure Orange Road vintage at 1987 >.<)

  16. […] Totali preaches the greatness of love power. […]

Yo! Nice list you have there, but i have to disagree with some things :P. First i didn’t watch Dears(maybe i’ll watch it next) so School Rumble goes to my top spot; i also think lamune doesn’t deserve the fail title, as there are others much more suitable for it xP (such as Girls Bravo, Sister Princess or Hand Maid May…)

Oh, and i am not in any way defending lamune… i think it wasn’t that great too xD.

Would you agree with me when i say the blonde girl from amaenaideyo katsu (kazuki) is what makes this series have its worth?

Ah my goddess = Kikuko Inoue = Win… nuff said

Of course these are all my rather peculiar opinions, so i wouldn’t be surprised if you disagree ^_^’.

Finally, i would recommend you to watch Umisho, even though its more oriented to comedy/ecchi than love/comedy.

Sorry for the long post!!! Laters o/
