Off to Uni: Delays and Changes

Mai iMac and “the little iBook that could” will be taking a break from downloading for awhile =\.
I just wanted to let everyone know that I will be busy settling into my dorm for the next few days. This is also my first year of college, so I’m not exactly sure how the internet policy is gonna work. Basically, episode reviews will be delayed until I get everything figured out. Do any college students out there have any advice on acquiring anime while living on campus :P? Classes start soon afterwards and my Tuesdays and Thursdays are pretty stacked, so my blogging schedule will also be affected for awhile. Why not check out some of the other great blogs on my blogroll while I’m gone? ^.

Just to let you know God approves of your setup. Though God would go with a 30″ Apple Cinema Display.

Oh man, don’t remind me, my second year of uni starts soon as well, it’s going to obliterate my anime time.
As for acquiring anime on campus, just pray your uni doesn’t block torrents.
Also, God, Dell’s 3007WFP is superior.
Shirukii, Yes well I have to agree. For now God only has the Dell 24″ but it has lasted him well. While God dreams of having a 30″ Cinema Display he acknowledges that the Dell 3007WFP is in fact better.

Heh, times change fast…my computer when I went off to college was a Macintosh Classic, a computing powerhouse with an 8MHz Motorola 68000, two megabytes of RAM, and a 40 MB hard drive. I remember thinking at the time there was no way I’d never fill 40 megabytes since that’d be a hell of a lot of term papers…of course now, even half an episode of Doujin Work wouldn’t fit on that…
Have fun in college, I’ve got to think dorms these days have broadband so access to fansubs shouldn’t be hard–unless of course, you’re studying abroad in Singapore ^^;
Lots of universities cap your bandwidth and charge a hefty fee if you go over. Hence the need to share anime with friends. Good luck!!
Kabitzin speaks the truth, and I’ve found out from second-hand experience how bad those fees can be from my time in undergrad. Ask around to see if there are anyways to share anime through a network contained in the university to save bandwidth. Or maybe don’t download as much as you have before. It will be okay. :3
Your college should have internet policy, some allow t0rents while others dont. Mine doesnt, but I live at home. My friend on the other hand lives in the dorms and he has wireless so its harder to track, but they can block MAC addresses and stuff which is also easy to bypass. Uh if you just have a really bad problem. Take that computer which you think is a laptop and use it on a free wireless network around town to get your anime.
Hmmm, seems like we’re on the same boat. I really don’t know what to expect as this will be my first year in college as well. From what I know on my side, torrents and everything are fine as long as they don’t catch you downloading…say like American movies. I find it more disgusting that my college requires all students to install Norton and run it on their system in order to get accepted on the school’s net.
For blogging time…not sure. How many hours of class do you have in a week? My schedule generally runs from 8 to 12 in the morning. It’ll probably depend on how much I’m required to study outside class. Probably not a lot of free time seeing that I’m in Computer Science major at a polytechnic.
Part of me is also worried I won’t be able to safely browse around for doujins and NSFW’s as I have two roommates. Uguu~
im starting my first year of college too this september and gonna live in a dorm where the internet is slow as heck. i may have to stop watching anime for a few months :’( until i can get better internet access
gonna miss ur blogs =P
Im in my second year, I started last week anyway I always find the library to have great internet connection. Since it they computers one can connect through there wireless server.
good luck! i’ll miss your blogs haha
I start Uni in next October but I have researched this because it was important lol.
Most dorm with internet access will have no problems with downloading but it is usually restricted to fair use, P2P only at nights and such. Dorms are usually harder to get from second year onwards (in England anyways) so survive the one year and then get your own place or rent, trying to get your ideal setup.
The best setup is find a group of anime watchers to join and the group will download different things and share them between to use less bandwidth between them. I have a friend going into the Navy with no idea what interneting will be like but knows that an officer can still have all his computing stuff, so we have arranged that I send him through the mail, anime on CDs.
There are usually some wireless access point around campus that you can make good use of as well. There is also the chance that you will just have less time to actually watch anything so this won’t be a problem; between lectures, independent study and a social uni experience.
Have fun. Uni is supposed to be a wondrous experience.
PS. i love your set up. It makes mine pitiful in comparison D:
When I was at college, IRC was still a popular method of getting anime so even though torrents would go like 2kbs, I could still get like 80kbs from an XDCC bot.
Damn mate, I will miss you. your comments on the shows I like are the best! I hope you will somehow manage to continue blogging after you get to know collage. go luck with the studying and have fun!
Its gonna be tough on you and us. Well anyways good luck.lol
You have such an awesome setup orz
LOTS OF REPLIES INC!!!
God > Gee, thanks God. I really only wanted a 20″ monitor to match mai iMac :S
Shirukki > I think a lot of people are heading back to school. Anime time will be getting shorter and shorter :V. My University does block torrents, but I have already found a few workarounds for that.
suguru > That comp sounds hella leet. Yea, my dorm’s internet speed is pretty fast as far as normal use goes. I have plans to enjoy Uni to the fullest!
Kabitzin > I have been told that we will be warned if we start using too much bandwidth, but I haven’t heard of any fees or a specific limit yet.
TheBigN > I will probably be downloading a lot less anyways because of being busy with school. Again, I have yet to hear about the fees, but I’ll work with whatever comes at me.
AvidChronos > Our dorm is at the center of many fast food resturaunts and convenience stores that I have already discovered offering free wifi. That sounds like a plan if I really have to do it.
aurabolt > wewt for first years! My schedule is set up so that my Tuesdays and Thursdays are pretty much stacked for the day, and I have a night class on Wednesday. That means I get a 4 day weekend every week though. I’ll just have to adjust acording to that. LOL gl with the doujins……nyrooonnn~~
SsK > wow, seems like a lot of people are in the same boat as me. I hope things go ok for you, and maybe you’ll find other ways to obtain anime as well. I’ll miss your comments too!
cangri23 > that might be an option. I’ll have to see if my laptop can connect to their wifi without restrictions.
mewmew > I actually don’t plan to quit blogging anytime soon so don’t kill me off yet! I won’t go down without a fight!
Deranged > Yea, I think our school is concerned only if we start affecting other users. I don’t think I will have to start doing crazy things to obtain anime yet, but I guess I could be prepared. Of course I was planning on spending less time on anime for my studies, but I will still have plenty of time to enjoy one of my hobbies
Hinano > That is one of the options I came up while planning ahead. It does seem to be the best option for now. I also thought about finally giving in and installing windows/share but that’s not something I really want to do right away, and I don’t know if they also shape traffic for other p2p programs.
arcanes > I am finding ways. If I really have to, I will change my blogging style a bit. I really love anime blogging, so I don’t want to quit when I’ve barely gotten started!
Sniper > Thanks for all the encouragement ^.
Zeroblade > thanks….I try to make the best use of it as I can ;P
Speaking from a network administration point of view, torrenters become the most problematic when they run without any bandwidth caps, since they take up all available network resources. That in turn causes other people on the network to experience delays and then they start complaining, which results in headaches for admins.
That’s probably fastest way to get on the haet list; you make more work for the people in charge, they’re more likely to take pleasure in shutting you down. Find out how much bandwidth you have to work with, and then cap your torrenting to like half of that, maybe less during peak evening hours.
Chances are, if your uni doesn’t already have draconian packet shaping in place, as long as you keep your head down and don’t cause trouble for them they’ll ignore you.
If they do start cracking down on you, then you’ve still got the usual workarounds…
- Encrypting your torrent traffic
- Changing your IP and MAC address
- Wardriving for nearby unsecured networks
- Make a big cantenna so you can access said networks from your dorm or apartment
- And, as Hinano said, IRC is your friend.
Anyway, have fun at uni, take it easy, and don’t worry if you have to cut back on your blogging. Uni was far more demanding than any job I’ve ever worked, so it’s to be expected that you might not have as much free time.
Thanks for the tips, Orion. The thing is, they actually shape traffic to block all torrents. I can’t even download the torrent file itself. Me and my dorm mate have tried a lot of the things you’ve mentioned to no avail. After asking around though, it seems like they will only get on to us if we REALLY start affecting other users. Since torrents are pretty much out of the question for downloading anyways, that’s not really possible. For now, I am definitely sticking to IRC as my main source :S.
I don’t think my first semester will be too tough. I’m a digital media major so they just gave me a bunch of design classes and like…english. I’m already planning on changing my blogging patterns a bit though, so hopefully future semesters will go smoothly ^.
