I don’t think my first semester will be too tough. I’m a digital media major so they just gave me a bunch of design classes and like…english. I’m already planning on changing my blogging patterns a bit though, so hopefully future semesters will go smoothly ^.

That’s probably fastest way to get on the haet list; you make more work for the people in charge, they’re more likely to take pleasure in shutting you down. Find out how much bandwidth you have to work with, and then cap your torrenting to like half of that, maybe less during peak evening hours.

Chances are, if your uni doesn’t already have draconian packet shaping in place, as long as you keep your head down and don’t cause trouble for them they’ll ignore you.

If they do start cracking down on you, then you’ve still got the usual workarounds…

- Encrypting your torrent traffic
- Changing your IP and MAC address
- Wardriving for nearby unsecured networks
- Make a big cantenna so you can access said networks from your dorm or apartment
- And, as Hinano said, IRC is your friend.

Anyway, have fun at uni, take it easy, and don’t worry if you have to cut back on your blogging. Uni was far more demanding than any job I’ve ever worked, so it’s to be expected that you might not have as much free time.

Shirukki > I think a lot of people are heading back to school. Anime time will be getting shorter and shorter :V. My University does block torrents, but I have already found a few workarounds for that.

suguru > That comp sounds hella leet. Yea, my dorm’s internet speed is pretty fast as far as normal use goes. I have plans to enjoy Uni to the fullest!

Kabitzin > I have been told that we will be warned if we start using too much bandwidth, but I haven’t heard of any fees or a specific limit yet.

TheBigN > I will probably be downloading a lot less anyways because of being busy with school. Again, I have yet to hear about the fees, but I’ll work with whatever comes at me.

AvidChronos > Our dorm is at the center of many fast food resturaunts and convenience stores that I have already discovered offering free wifi. That sounds like a plan if I really have to do it.

aurabolt > wewt for first years! My schedule is set up so that my Tuesdays and Thursdays are pretty much stacked for the day, and I have a night class on Wednesday. That means I get a 4 day weekend every week though. I’ll just have to adjust acording to that. LOL gl with the doujins……nyrooonnn~~

Deranged > Yea, I think our school is concerned only if we start affecting other users. I don’t think I will have to start doing crazy things to obtain anime yet, but I guess I could be prepared. Of course I was planning on spending less time on anime for my studies, but I will still have plenty of time to enjoy one of my hobbies

Hinano > That is one of the options I came up while planning ahead. It does seem to be the best option for now. I also thought about finally giving in and installing windows/share but that’s not something I really want to do right away, and I don’t know if they also shape traffic for other p2p programs.

arcanes > I am finding ways. If I really have to, I will change my blogging style a bit. I really love anime blogging, so I don’t want to quit when I’ve barely gotten started!

Most dorm with internet access will have no problems with downloading but it is usually restricted to fair use, P2P only at nights and such. Dorms are usually harder to get from second year onwards (in England anyways) so survive the one year and then get your own place or rent, trying to get your ideal setup.

The best setup is find a group of anime watchers to join and the group will download different things and share them between to use less bandwidth between them. I have a friend going into the Navy with no idea what interneting will be like but knows that an officer can still have all his computing stuff, so we have arranged that I send him through the mail, anime on CDs.

There are usually some wireless access point around campus that you can make good use of as well. There is also the chance that you will just have less time to actually watch anything so this won’t be a problem; between lectures, independent study and a social uni experience.

Have fun. Uni is supposed to be a wondrous experience.
