Devil May Cry - 11

Just one more episode!

Summary:

A man follows a woman out of the bar as she leaves, but she warns him to stay away from her. Before he can react, he is killed by a demon. This demon goes after the woman next, but it is destroyed by a blue light. Patty complains about Dante’s laziness at the Devil May Cry, and he finally gets up to clean his mess. He unthinkingly says that Patty is the kind of girl that acts like she wants her parent’s attention, which makes her reply that it is because her parents are not there. Patty runs out, and Morrison comes in shortly after with a client. The client, Nina, presents a pendant for Dante to protect. Dante eventually agrees as usual, as he has free time. Patty observes the picture of her mother while walking down the street, expressing that she thought Dante would understand her since his parents are gone as well. As Nina passes by her on the opposite side of the street, Patty senses that it is her mother. Dante stops by for his usual strawberry sundae at the restaurant, and Cindy comments that he should make up with Patty soon. Dante remembers the expression Patty had, as Lady stops by to greet him. Dante tells her that he is working to guard the pendant, and prevents her from touching it. Lady grabs the pendant from him anyways, and leaves after quickly examining it.

In the room of a very high building, Nina expresses her worries to a man named Simon. Simon’s attention is quickly brought to something happening below, which happens to be Dante’s encounter with a demon. Dante quickly finds that the demon is after Nina’s pendant. The demon expresses that he could obtain great power if he had it, before Dante finishes it off. On his way out of the alley, Dante passes by Nina who had rushed to the scene. Dante brings up that she did not mention demons were actually after the pendant, as she stands in surprise. Nina introduces Simon to Dante, and asks for the pendant back in order to keep outsiders away from danger. Dante asks for the payment, which Nina confirms will be available the next day. With this, Dante only agrees to return the pendant the next day as well. Patty appears and calls out to her mother, but Nina runs away before she can catch her. While Dante expresses that she must be mistaken, Simon tries to touch the pendant hanging from Dante’s pocket. This leaves an injury on his hand, and he later takes a dagger out to obtain the blood of the demon that was just killed. Patty remains on bad terms with Dante the next day, and disappears from the Devil May Cry with the pendant after hearing of Nina’s location from Morrison. Dante answers a phone call from Trish, before realizing that the pendant is missing from his desk.

Nina lays on the bed while thinking of Patty, before answering the door to Simon. She reminds him that she cannot be with Patty, before observing the wound on his hand. Simon tells her that he had coffee spill on it, but she realizes that he was not one to drink coffee. While Trish inspects a library, she meets Lady who is holding a particular book. Nina finds herself tied up, while Simon expresses that she probably knows what he wants. Nina brings up that the pendant would only benefit demons, and that he would not be able to touch it if he was one. Simon expresses that he is a demon with only the power to take on a human appearance, before revealing that he is actually the short scarred demon in disguise. With many pieces gathered from various demon encounters, he now stands above a large pentagram. Meanwhile, Dante and Morrison arrive to the hotel. Patty enters the room, which brings the last three things the demon needs to complete the ritual. After realizing that Nina is really her mother, Patty brings the pendant to the center of the pentagram under the demon’s threats. A blue light fills the room shortly afterwards, and the demon jumps down into the portal that appears. Patty runs to a despairing Nina, and Dante leaves the rest up to Morrison before jumping into the portal as well. Morrison works to evacuate the hotel, while Dante and the demon face off in a barren area. Outside, Nina falls to the ground while expressing that the end of the world is coming.

ED: We got a very cool ED in preparation for the final showdown. The regular track is taken away, and we are given a dark shot of Dante pinned to a cross and bleeding.

Preview: Stylish!

Impression:

With only one episode left, Devil May Cry finally puts all the pieces together for a somewhat continuous story. I wish all of the episodes could have been like this, because this was awesome! I absolutely loved the last scene with Dante facing up his final opponent, and the special ending just added to the effect. Patty’s real mother is finally revealed, which quickly results in a lot of trouble. Everyone probably saw the little demon’s plan coming, especially after all his encounters with Dante. I suspect that he will become a much bigger threat to Dante in the next episode. Lady and Trish are obviously busy researching something, and they will probably be of help to Dante in the final battle as well. After this huge buildup, I’m hoping for an amazing climax to the end of this series. It certainly looks pretty epic. The last episode’s title is “Stylish!”, another popular phrase from the games.

    Wow,dude, you sure are quick!

Good to see the anime creators have finally taken their fat heads out of their asses and put the stories together into one interesting story. ^^ Keep up the good work and congratulations in advance for finishing the blogging of the whole series! :D

“Good to see the anime creators have finally taken their fat heads out of their asses and put the stories together into one interesting story.”

I don’t want to sound presumptuous or arrogant, but I think that’s what Madhouse had planned already. If anything, the DMC anime very much resembles the direction that Gungrave took: both are high octane balls-to-walls action games, but said action takes a backseat in the animation series in exchange for character development.

Similar to Gungrave, what DMC is trying to do is concreticize Dante’s character into something more than just “badass demon hunter who cracks a sarcastic line or two”. That was the main complaint that players of the game had, especially after the manga of DMC3 was released - that we wanted to see more of Dante’s personality, aside from the ass-kicking action that the games offered. The games show only the surface of Dante’s persona and character, and fans of Dante wanted to see more. And this is what Madhouse is giving us. Devil May Cry isn’t Devil May Cry if you just keep putting Dante in action scenes, because it’s also Dante’s character which makes the games stand for what it is. That’s why Devil May Cry 2 failed tremendously: not only was it bad in terms of gameplay, it completely dumbed down Dante’s character to a basic “silent bad ass” anime character archetype, which he wasn’t.

I don’t know about you guys, but I like this show, just as I liked Gungrave. Both are underrated because they don’t carry the same adrenaline rush of action scenes found in their games, but if you scratch the surface and look beneath that, you actually find something worthwhile to watch. It’s the character developments that actually count, and seeing Dante’s character shine through in each Mission just makes him all the more awesome in my book, even if the anime doesn’t have the same action sequences as found in the game.

As for the next episode…well, what else is there to say? LET’S ROCK!

Nowshin > Luckily, DMC is one of the shows that isn’t affected by my University schedule, so I can still blog it regularly. ^.

jlyn101 > No need to follow the crowd, as I very much enjoyed blogging DMC. The last episode is going to be epic, and I am very much looking forward to it.

Hemisphere > You’re going to have to wait for my final impression before I give my thoughts on the series as a whole, but I will say that I agree with you for the most part.

  5. Nowshin September 1st, 2007 8:47 am

Don’t take my comment the wrong way, fellow DMC fan Mr./Ms. Hemisphere. I agree with every word you said 100%. Just ass-kicking does not make up one’s character, there is more to it,just like you said.

What bugged me was the fact that Dante in the anime was neither the sarcastic badass he usually is nor a developed version of his sensitive self that we have caught a few glimpses of in the games (i.e. the “tears” at the ending of DMC3). Even though there were some scenes which DID display the development of his character(and made me happy ^^)they weren’t enough. For example the scene in episode 7 where Patty jumps on Dante, that was pretty cute and adorable, or episode 5, where the stalker not only made an ass of himself but also gave us a view of Dante from the perspective of an outsider, which was pretty interesting. But it really ticked me off that most of the time Dante is portrayed as too serious and melancholic in the anime, a bit more like “silent bad ass” anime character archetype, in your words. Often he acted wayyyy too cold for me to actually believe that it was Dante I was looking at in the screen. He seemed more like the DMC2 Dante whom I hate with a passion, that’s the main reason I had become frustrated with the series.

So the bottom line is, there wasn’t enough action nor character development for me to be interested in the series, resulting in the angry ramblings XD. Episode 2 and 6 fall into this category. But it seems the last episodes are becoming more and more focused on action and the quality of action is increasing as well, so I am content now. :)

Sorry from spamming your blog,Totali. XD

Oh, don’t think that I was trying to preach or anything! I was just using your comment as a way of launching into my own introspective ranting. Sorry if it came off like I wanted to correct you or something.

    Totali, you’ll forgive us for spamming your blog, right? ;_;

  7. Hemisphere September 1st, 2007 10:02 am

    Oops, correction! I meant “rambling”, not “ranting”. Minor error, sorry for the double post. ;_;

  8. Totali September 1st, 2007 10:53 am

Once again, I’m going to have to say that you guys will have to wait for my final impression before I touch on all these well thought out things. Hopefully my Uni schedule won’t screw that up, and I’ll be able to meet everyone’s expectations! xD

As far as “spamming” on my blog, it’s not actually spamming. I actually like to promote discussion on my blog, as do most other bloggers. The difference between a blog and some anime fansite, is that it is make for interaction in many different ways. With that said, spam on! ^.

  9. Nowshin September 2nd, 2007 1:52 am

    Spam FTW! :D

Aye, me good lad Hemisphere, let’s rejoice over the end of our argument and watch the last episode together! *opens champagne bottle*

By the way, Totali, which DMC games have you played?

  10. Nowshin September 2nd, 2007 2:12 am

Holy shit, did I write “Sorry from” instead of “Sorry for”? T_T I am truly an asshole.

  11. Totali September 2nd, 2007 4:44 pm

I have played the first and third titles and completed both of them in various ways. I started playing the second one, but couldn’t go on because it was so bad. I’m looking forward to the fourth installment!

  12. TosheX September 3rd, 2007 10:05 am

Well remember the third - when Dante is stabbed by his sword he turns into demon form - that’s what i wanna see.

And the little shitty demon has got it coming - next episode Dante will slay the bastard - and one word is on my mind for a final line: JACKPOT! :D

  13. Totali September 3rd, 2007 3:08 pm

Well said TosheX! I’ve been waiting for Dante to have a demon transformation since one of the earlier episodes where I predicted it would happen but it didn’t…Will we get it? Maybe, maybe not. Either way, the last episode will have to be good.
