Kodomo no Jikan OVA

OP: “Otome Chikku Shoshinsha Desu (オトメチック初心者でーす)” by Eri Kitamura, Kei Shindou, and Mai Kadowaki – very poppy, very generic. This is another one of those openings that I can only say is “fitting” to the show (aka. not innovative at all). It also hinted at those risky scenes that this show will be known for.

Summary:

Mimi licks off some dripping ice cream, which makes her friends Rin and Kuro express that it is erotic. The three girls are visiting a department store, to buy a present. While playing around, they remember when they found their teachers’ book at school. The teacher, Daisuke, had entered to stop them, but they got away with Rin showing her panties to him. Rin tries on some bras in the store, and Mimi looks around as well. Some older woman talk insultingly about her developed breasts, and mention that she is still a child. Rin gives apologizes to them in an adult manner, before moving on with Mimi and Kuro. While they continue playing, Mimi thinks of how wonderful her friends are. They find a gift for Daisuke, but they find that they have run out of money because of the activities they’ve done. Rin asks Kuro for a favor, expressing that she will do anything. Kuro begins to imagine a kiss with Rin, and continues when Rin suggests that they go to their house for a different plan.

Rin’s guardian, Reiji, arrives home to see her friends. As Rin gets permission for her friends to stay over, Mimi observes his amazing points. She expresses how lucky Rin is, and imagines getting into a situation with Reiji. Reiji brings some snacks to the girls, but Mimi spills the milk he gives her all over herself. Mimi cries as the three enter the bath, but Rin cheers her up by assuring her that no one is angry at her. Mimi notices Rin’s great points, as they prepare to wash. Finding that they are out of shampoo, Mimi panics at the sight of Reiji seeing her nude body. However, she finds that he doesn’t notice at all. They do things to make themselvse look like adults afterwards, but Mimi’s image seems very real. Afterwards, Reiji lends a shirt to Mimi because Rin’s pajamas are too small for her. Rin looks around to find that her friends are very happy.

While Rin tells Reiji what they were doing at the department store, he wonders if she is hiding anything from him. She doesn’t mention anything about Daisuke, but assures him that she isn’t hiding anything. At the dinner table, Mimi again notices that the reason Rin can be so happy without her parents is Reiji. Mimi makes some wishes before bed, when Reiji comes in to give Rin a goodnight kiss. This makes Mimi panic, as she wonders if Reiji and Rin are going out. While asking Kuro about him, they find that Rin is awake. She expresses that she likes Daisuke, and Reiji has someone he likes already. As Reiji prepares for bed, he looks at a picture of a woman holding Rin in her arms with a smile. While her friends have fallen asleep, Rin expresses how much she likes Daisuke as she paints something.

The three head to school the next day, as they prepare to give Daisuke gifts. They wonder what Rin is going to do for a gift, since her painting was messed up the night before. Daisuke gets some pictures sent to him in his cell phone by Rin. He finds that one is extremely risky, and he looks outside the window to find the three girls waving up at him. Below them is text describing him as a lolicon. Kyoko, Daisuke’s female teacher aquiantance, arrives, but Daisuke distracts her before she can see. Mimi expresses the different feelings Rin has for Daisuke, as he runs down to them. When he arrives at the end of Rin’s countdown, she jumps into his arms.

ED: “Aijou Education (愛情◎エデュケイション)” by Little Non – I actually really like the ED! It has a nice pop rock sound to it, with a well put together animation. It actually only consists of still frames being thrown together like every other ED in town, but it looks pretty good and matches the beat of the song.

Impression:

After finally getting around to this ova, I’m actually not too shocked about it. I’m sure most of you have already heard of this show after all the controversy news that was going around awhile ago. Personally, I really didn’t find it to be as extremely lolicon centered as I expected it to be. This was even an ova, not a tv broadcast, so they could have went further. They had a few “nude” scenes, but so what? I’ve seen worse stuff before. Things like the girls’ imaginations were actually really funny, and I totally saw the milk thing coming. After getting past the “loli” aspect of this show (which I did pretty quickly), I actually found this to give off that love comedy feel that I really like.

The cast and production for this show also seem very promising. I was actually surprised at how good the scenery looked, and the animation was great. I might be talking too soon considering that this is an ova, but I doubt it. The quality wasn’t something unreasonable by any means. There was a very good cast as well. I have recently taken notice of Kitamura Eri (as Rin) for her roles in Touka Gettan, Seto no Hanayome, and Potemayo. Majima Junji (as Daisuke) is also playing the lead male role for the upcoming Goshusho-sama Ninomiya-kun that I am very much looking forward to. Shindou Kei (as Kuro) and Tanaka Ryouko (as Kyoko) are lesser known to me, but they seemed to fit their roles well. Kadowaki Mai played her role as Mimi just as she played Behoimi in Pani Poni Dash! Of course, it is impossible to miss Sugita Tomokazu (as Reiji) for his massive amount of roles in shows like Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu, Kanon, Honey and Clover, Chobits, Shuffle, etc. I did find that the cast seemed to sound more mature than they looked. I don’t know if this was intentional, but it took a bit of getting used to either way.

So, I’m not sure if I will be blogging this in the upcoming season. This show is really looking like a love comedy that I will enjoy, and I soon got past the guilty feelings that would keep me from watching it. However, just like all other shows now, it will depend on if I can get the show. Also, I’m not too sure what my dorm mate would think if he saw me watching it over my shoulder. Haha. Whether I blog this or not, it is certain that I will be watching it. I actually sampled some of the manga awhile back, and the story is a really touching one of a girl who has lost a lot, and the teacher who can restore the loving feelings she really needs. It’d definitely not just a lolicon show. I probably can’t say more than that at the moment without giving things away. Look forward to the TV series coming very soon!

After hearing that the anime is going to be leaving a lot of the manga content out, I’m worried about how the TV series will come off. If you take out the controversial parts of the manga, you’re basically left with what everyone is stereotyping Kojikan as, a lolicon anime. And if that happens, us manga readers are going to have an even tougher time convincing everyone else that Kojikan is more than just loli fanservice.

    Manga breakdown: 30% cute, 50% pedo, 20% Womanly tears ;_;

This is just sick ,i mean they could have been in middle or high school. There too young. They should be like Primila from Shuffle. It would be mess up if you blog this. I agree its a good comedy but its plain sick. There too young at least have a double digit age, that would have been okay.

Well there’s both sides of the Kodojikan opinion right there, and the only thing I can say to either is….”sigh”. :S

I think Shirukii wrote both of those comments. ;)

The OVA seems to have elaborated on the manga in a constructive way. I think the TV series could do well by reinforcing their personalities and creating a decent plot; without the pointless fanservice.

    no wai~

I’m still trying to decide whether or not I want to blog this show, being so controversial, with the new season coming around the corner. I might just have to make my decision based on how much coverage it’s getting….even though it is an LC, I might have to hold off on this one. Then again, I blogged shows like Touka Gettan ;P.

The ova was good, more like what I’d expect from the tv show though, in terms of risqué material. Having just caught up on the manga, I have to wonder how much they’ll cut to get it on the air. Because the last couple chapters are pretty out there; but, who knows, maybe it’ll make it through more or less unchanged.

In this class, there is a group of trouble making girls, and one that seems to have a liking for him. Yea, everyone has heard of the controversy over this show, but I’m really not fazed too much about it. It’s still a love comedy, and I even blogged the ova. [...]
