Shakugan no Shana 2 – 01

OP: “JOINT” by Mami Kawada – I love Mami Kawada. This song seems to follow her regular style, but I’m not complaining. The animation is very cool, much like the first season’s two.

Summary:

In a dead forest, a girl rings a set of bells while expressing the creation of an eternal dream. Yuuji goes to school as usual at the start of the second term, but he finds that things are happening the same way they did before when he talks to Ike. Kazumi and the rest of the students arrive at school as usual, and so does Shana after she bids a pesky Wilhelmina off. In class, Yuuji realizes that he could not hear the words Shana told him in the Seireiden. When Shana replies to the teacher, Yuuji again feels like something similar has happened before. Suddenly, a fuzetsu takes place, as Friagne shows himself. This battle happens the same way it did the first time, and Yuuji is confused when Shana does not notice that Friagne should already be dead.

When school ends, Yuuji asks Ike what month it is. He replies that it is obviously September, but Yuuji expresses that it would be strange for sakura petals to fall in that month. Ike ignores this, and even Wilhelmina acts neutrally according to Yuuji’s observation. Finding the situation to be similar to a Jizaiho, Yuuji seeks out Margery Daw. This is in vain, but Yuuji begins to hear the little girl’s laugh. At home, Yuuji realizes that the situation he is in impossible. He asks his mother a question that she should not have the reply to when she enters his room, causing a shift in time. Yuuji then finds himself facing the siblings who have trapped Shana. Realizing that this is impossible, Yuuji simply flies in front of Shana. He declares that it is a dream, before being cut by the Nietono no Shana.

Yuuji wakes in the middle of a battle, where the real Shana is. He finds out from Alastor that he was only out for a second, while the girl continues to attack. Shana slices the girl in half, expressing that it is the first time she has seen such a small Tomogara soon afterwards. Yuuji mentions the girl’s strange powers, but he cannot remember the places in the dream where he should not have been. As the two head to school afterwards, Yuuji questions Shana about what she said to him in the Seireiden. Extremely embarrassed, Shana puts her confession off as something unimportant. At school, Kazumi is ready to compete against Shana for Yuuji. Margery is hung over, as everyone else attends school as usual.

ED: “triangle” by Mami Kawada – Woah, she’s doing the ED too? What’s up with that! For some reason, this song just doesn’t sound right for an ED to me. Maybe I’ll get used to it.

Preview: Something is wrong with Yuji, and Kazumi gets captured.

Impression:

The second season is going to be amazing. I can feel it. This episode had that slight recap feeling to it, but it went by surprisingly fast. There were a lot of small gaps filled that the movie didn’t cover, so watching the first season won’t really be necessary. I’m already in love with the OP and ED, but that’s just because I’m a sucker for Mami Kawada. The animation was wonderful, and the pacing just feels great. I was really happy to see characters like Wilhelmina again, and I was reminded of how many great seiyu play in this show. The love love that wasn’t in the movie returned, which I obviously approve of. In my season reformation, I was actually considering dropping this for Clannad, but now I’m not so sure. I really hate blogging shows that a million other blogs are already covering to be honest, and I think Clannad is more hyped than Shana by a little bit, Eh, we’ll see. I might end up not blogging either or even blogging both.

Man it was great hearing Shana’s “Urusai urusai urusai” again, so moe I died.

I’m going to reserve my judgment about how epic SnSII is going to be for the next episode though. This one had far too little new content for me to say how it’ll turn out.

This season is proving to be hard in terms of choosing what to blog. I really want to blog both Shana AND Clannad, but the coverage its getting is significant already.

aurabolt > Shana all the way. Kk!? :D D

Shirukii > I just have a feeling by the way the episode was presented. Oh, and speaking of moe…Shana so wasted that perfectly good meron pan at the end of this episode. wth…wth…

I totally agree about the coverage…I really wanted to blog these 2 shows too but there’s SO MUCH coverage…wah! I can’t decide till I go through all the new shows, but I did plan on watching Clannad and Shana whether I blog them or not…so it’s kind of a headache! xP

Okay, is it worth watching the first series? I saw the first episode, and it didn’t interest me. (same thing I did with Claymore, I know, it’s unfair) Was I missing out on much?

    Akito > I dunno…I’ve never played it :S

Rentington > Everyone says that they cannot enjoy the first episode of Shana. Well, except for me. It’s actually what got me hooked. I would give it a few more episodes….like, when the action starts. If you want a quick run down of the first couple episodes, just check out the movie. It’s a remake.

I was totally like “Hey, sakura petals should not be falling in September,” when it happened. I am not sure if I should be proud of this, or saddened by it.

I know what you mean about shows with a lot of coverage. It starts feeling like a rat race where everything that can be said has been said, and it’s a struggle to be first. I just avoid reading other people’s summaries before writing mine, and don’t try to be the first one out (plus people watching raws always beat me anyway). Mostly the pressure is all in your mind, and after a year or so, half (or more) of the blogs that covered the show will be dead anyway. In other words, if you want to blog it, blog it, and competition be damned!

  12. Totali October 8th, 2007 6:45 pm

Runningkid > I told you! NOOOOO

Kabitzin > Eh, I try not to think about it as “competition”. That’s kind of dumb. But yea, I just find it really hard to come up with something that everyone else wouldn’t already say. It’s just that although I do enjoy watching these shows, they aren’t the kind I usually blog. Sometimes I’d rather just watch, then go spam other blogs about it xD. Ah, I don’t even know what I’m saying… ;P

Personally I think this episode with the movie is meant to correct flaws in season 1 and provide the story the feeling of a fresh start, while allowing new fans to enter the series now.
