Bamboo Blade - 03

Is she pink, or could she be black!?

Summary:

Miyako catches up to Danjuro during exercise, and finds that he still has injuries from Toyama. Danjuro expresses that he is fine as he runs off, but Miyako is extremely angry. Ishida has the team practice until lunch time at the kendo club, as everyone gives Miyako their support. Ishida brings his students to a store, where they are introduced to Sakaguchi. This man was once a legend, but he is easily subdued when Tamaki shows herself to him. Yuji picks out a sabuhachi type sword, and everyone else chooses their preferred weapon as well. After choosing their guards, the team leaves with a bit more than they came for. Ishida gets a call from his acquaintance at home, as he puts the tournament off again. Bringing up the sacrifice Ishida would have to make if he lost, it is decided that the trophy in his room would be the one. Ishida remembers that although he won the trophy, it always seemed more deserving to his sempai. In fact, he would always ask for it after their graduation. When Ishida accidentally breaks the trophy, he declares that he must win.

The kendo girls receive faxes from Ishida at home, with different levels of reaction. Elsewhere, a girl named Sayako runs out of her home after trouble with her novel. The next day at school, Kirino overwrites the text on a room’s blackboard. Miyako overhears Toyama and his friend express their distaste as they pass her in the hallway, and the kendo club meets up afterwards. While putting on their bogu, Kirino notices that even Tamaki bought a new one. Tamaki expresses that she wanted to buy one along with everyone else, as it is the first time she has joined a club. Ishida soon makes Tamaki the leader red, like it is in the shows she watches. When Ishida labels Miyako as pink, he thinks for a second that she could have been black. Kirino mentions the suicidal message she got from Sayako, and Danjuro experiences a bit of embarrassment from the lettering on his gear being incorrect. Miyako leaves club early to get a sword, and she waits at the riverbank for Toyama. She starts to face them, but she is hit by Sayako on her bike. With this, Miyako throws Sayako’s bike in the river and walks off in anger.

Preview: Sayako’s entrance into the kendo club. Viva violence!

Impression:

Holy crap, this episode was hilarious! I never expected Miyako to be this kind of character. I think that makes it all the more funny. There wasn’t as much background on her and Danjuro as I expected, but that’s ok. I find it really awesome how she cares for Danjuro so much. I can’t say this is the first time I’ve seen a beauty and the dork complex though. Tamaki’s joy from being assigned “red” was so funny. This show might be one of those where I end up liking all of the girls. I like Miyako a lot more now, and I’m kind of interested in seeing what Sayako will bring to the table. Haha, “I’m going to die”. As far as actual development goes, we did get a bit of background on Ishida. It’s surprising that he was actually pretty good at kendo in the past. I guess that just proves that Tamaki is at the top of her class. I’m really looking forward to the actual matches after all of the character introduction is finished. There’s still two characters who need to show up first though!

I understand your sentiments perfectly. After 6 volumes of Bamboo Blade manga, I can say that I like ALL characters shown, which is quite a feat.

Mentar > So many manga readers around! Haha, I’m surprised that I haven’t spoiled myself yet. I’m glad to hear that the other girls are likable.

Aexile > rofl…that last scene was just brilliant xD. Judging from the title of the next ep, I’m guessing it’ll be more about those two girls.

Tokki > lol yea…nice and….RED. nice sky nice sky nice sky…

Haha, they kind of made Miyako more ‘black’ in the anime, and in my oppinion, she looked cooler in the manga. She had a habit of smoking in school, and if I remember correctly, that was how Sayako met her. They got into a fight and Sayako ended up being terrified of her, but it was pretty cute. (: I kinda wish they didn’t change it in the anime.

[…] non-sparkly but not-completely-dark voice. There’s been some discussion (as well as manga comparisons - see the comments) about Miya Miya’s ‘true’ nature but I agree with […]
