Hidamari Sketch Special - 02
A sick Yoshinoya is fine too.
Summary:
Yuno wakes up to a very cold and windy day, before heading off to school with Miyako. Hiro finds what seems to be a love letter in her shoe box upon arriving, making Sae and Yoshinoya suspect things. Yuno and Miyako discuss how they’ve done on their kanji tests, when Sae suddenly comes in to tell them the news. Yuno and Miyako pass notes about this matter while the Headmaster teaches class, and Sae comes in with more information about the boy afterwards. Yoshinoya intrudes on this conversation, before Sae takes her leave again.
While everyone continues to guess the situation during the break, Yoshinoya invades Hiro’s classroom. However, she is pulled away by the Headmaster before she can get any answers. Yuno sees a faceless boy talking to Hiro on the school rooftop, but she wakes up at the end of class to find that it was a dream. Miyako and Yuno meet Sae again at lunch, as they continue to discuss the matter. However, Sae leaves when a stuck up girl claims that they do not know anything about things like love. Yuno and Miyako make their way to Sae and Hiro’s classroom after they are released from class, but find that they are not there.
When the girls reach home, they discover that Hiro has already declined the letter. As she did not even find out the boy’s face, the girls believe that Hiro has made a very adult like choice. Hiro teases an embarrassed Sae about being lonely, and Sae thinks to herself that this is actually true. The girls wonder about Yoshinoya-sensei, so Hiro tells them about seeing her at school. She was under Kuahara-sensei’s care, while dreaming up her own love situation. The girls begin discussing Sae’s shock, as she defends herself about being in the same kind of situations. This makes Miyako recall having one of those situations when she was younger, but this wasn’t exactly the same kind of confession. Yuno begins describing what seems to be her first love, but it turns out that she was just talking about her father.
The conversation shifts to ways the girls would want to be confessed to, resulting in some strange ideas. Still wondering about what kind of boy confessed to Hiro, the girls also begin to talk about what kind of man would be good to date. It becomes dark before the girls realize it, so Hiro prepares dinner for them. Miyako expresses that Hiro would make a good wife, so the girls begin discussing this matter as well. Yuno hopes to find a wonderful person sometime in her life, but she believes that it would be bad to get a love letter because the headmaster would get mad. The next day at school, Sae sees that Miyako and Yuno have letters. However, they are not the love letters that she believed them to be.
Impression:
So did anyone ever actually figure out what exactly that green creature is!? It’s so awesome. Anyways, here’s the second episode. Wanting to avoid saying things that I already have in the first post, I’ll discuss the style this time. I thought it was a bit more relevant in this episode anyways. Maybe I was just paying more attention! By now, most of you probably know how much of a SHAFT fanatic I am. That might make my opinion biased, but I’ve always loved the style presented in this show. Although the majority of people might find the use of real objects in this animation awkward, I love it. I also think that the simple backdrops are awesome. Being the artistic people they are, SHAFT is such a perfect team to take on a show like this. Although the style is the same, the art seems to have improved as well. This can easily be credited to its being an ova rather than a television series though.
As far as the actually episode goes, it was probably funnier than the last. Yoshinoya’s love fantasy was hilarious, and she’s even likable in her sick state. This episode was probably more familiar to the series than the previous episode was as well, as it involved more dialog. The girls spent more time sitting around talking about simple things, which is really what most people think about when they think of Hidamari Sketch. I loved things like the kanji test, and Miyako’s “love encounter”. Other things like the random chick showing up in the middle of the girls’ lunch conversation and the japanese snacks on the side put a smile on my face too. SHAFT’s fanservice parody showed up at the end of the episode as well, with the multiple shots of Yuno in the bath. Haha. Well, although they didn’t bring much new to the table, these two episodes really reminded me of how great of a series Hidamari is. I am enjoying a ton of great memories right now, but I will also have ef and the second season of Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei to fill my SHAFT hunger for the next few seasons.

That green creature is Ume-sensei, who is actually Aoki Ume, the mangaka.
Woot, thanks Momo-chan ^. I know I’ve heard that before, but I guess I just don’t pay enough attention ;P. That little guy is so leet!
