Clannad – 09
That’s it. I quit Clannad…..AND ANIME!
Summary:
When they arrive at school, Nagisa tells Tomoya and Fuuko that her mother suggested that she be by Fuuko’s side. As Sanae looked like she could remember something when Fuuko’s name was mentioned, Nagisa and Tomoya assure Fuuko that it is not as if everyone has completely forgotten about her. Fuuko cannot help but open her gifts right away, so Tomoya calls her a kid. Tomoya teases Fuuko in her moment of usual joy, getting into a bit of trouble because of it. As Tomoya continues to call Fuuko a child, she replies by calling him the child. Fuuko makes Tomoya and Nagisa call each other by their names with “-chan” and “-kun”, but they both have difficulty doing so. When the two wonder why Fuuko insists on this, she replies that it is because she loves both of them. Fuuko expresses that she wants Nagisa and Tomoya to have the same happiness her sister and Yusuke have, before giving them kisses on the cheek.
Becoming extremely happy after putting on her party accessories, Fuuko wonders if they can celebrate right away. Tomoya and Nagisa decide that this is ok, even without Koko there, so the three happily congratulate Koko on her marriage. As it gets later in the night, Nagisa suggests that they get closer for warmth. Fuuko leans off on Nagisa’s shoulder, before finally falling asleep. When Tomoya and Nagisa wake up alone in the room the next morning, they cannot remember why they are there. They have similar feelings of confusion after visiting Nagisa’s parents, and they can only realize that they are forgetting something important. Nagisa reveals the starfish carving she has found in her room, and expresses how calm it makes her feel. At school, Kyou attempts to invite Tomoya to go somewhere with her and Ryou the next day. He can only deny, as he feels as if there was suppose to be something important on that day.
Nagisa also feels as if she has forgotten something important about the next day. When Nagisa and Tomoya look to see what Komura-sensei is doing not too far away, they discover that it is Koko’s marriage the next day. The two instantly wonder how they could have forgotten about something so important, and also recall that there should be one more person. Komura suggests that this is Koko’s younger sister, making the two remember Fuuko. With this, they are again able to see Fuuko who has been with them the entire time. When the wedding takes place, Tomoya and Nagisa are seemingly the only two students that attend. Tomoya leads Nagisa and Fuuko to a good place to congratulate Koko after the vows, and there they notice many students arriving outside. Kyou tells Tomoya that she and Ryou had suddenly remembered the wedding when they saw their starfish in the morning. This seems to be the case with the rest of the students who have gathered, and Nagisa’s parents who are also there. Tomoya expresses that Fuuko’s feelings were certainly delivered, as Koko and Yusuke walk out to see the cheering students.
Fuuko brings up a festival dream to Tomoya, where he had reached out to Fuuko who was alone. Fuuko states that she had fun with Tomoya and Nagisa, before disappearing from them. When Koko walks up to Tomoya and Nagisa, they are in tears. Tomoya tells Koko of the one person who had arranged the celebration, and explains that he and Nagisa simply enjoyed being around her. Tomoya hopes that Koko will be happy for this person’s sake, and she readily agrees. Suddenly, Fuuko appears in front of her sister to present her with a carved starfish. Fuuko wishes Koko eternal happiness, before disappearing with the wind. Afterwards, Koko expresses to Tomoya and Nagisa that Fuuko would surely be happy if they continued to be. At school, rumors of Koko’s sister have spread throughout the school. When the girls notice the starfish that Youhei is holding, they realize that it is that cheerful girl’s. While Tomoya sleeps, he dreams of the cheerful girl who is always running. Everyone is always waiting for that one day that she will open her eyes. Fuuko holds out a star to Tomoya, hoping that he could become her friend.
Preview: Kotomi’s arc starts.
Impression:
I might consider to keep going if you join the Starfish Alliance in Anime Arimasu’s final rounds. This episode was obviously the tear jerker, and it ended with the bittersweet ending that I was expecting and hoping for. I think this episode really did well to represent what is so charming about Fuuko; her child like innocence. She even went on to wish Tomoya and Nagisa happiness, as she also sees that they are meant to be together. There is something about birthday hats that give off a nostalgic feeling, and I couldn’t help but smile all throughout this episode. Well, until I was tearing up at the wedding scene. Fuuko continued to give off foreshadowing of her disappearance early in the episode, especially when she lost her playful smile. Her giving a starfish to her sister was definitely the peak of the episode, and I was smiling in bittersweet happiness by the end of the episode. Of course, the message left obviously means that we will see Fuuko again by the end of the series. I loved both the eufonious insert song and the one that played at the end of this episode (I believe this is from the game?). I really don’t know what else to say. I will really miss you, Fuuko. Next week starts Kotomi’s arc. Did I hear screams of rejoice from Noto fans? Oh, and I have a major headache right now. Having class all day didn’t help. I’ll get to my other shows and replying to everyone tomorrow (What’s new?).

Fuuko! Just a nice ending for her arc… I bet about everyone who watched this ep was tearing up… (I’m just tearing up again from reading this)
FUKO!! NOOOO… I haven’t seen the episode yet, but I think I’ll tear up once I watch it T_T
No, you heard the screams of me putting people out of their misery
Now if you excuse me, I have to watch a parking meter get the crap beaten out of it by a bear.
Aha…I had a feeling they would continue with Kotomi’s arc after Fuuko’s arc. This episode concluded Fuuko’s story really well, and I do hope we get to see her again at the end of the series. I still wonder how they are going to incorporate Tomoyo’s and Kyou’s arc without conflicting with Nagisa’s though.
The song at the end was Ana by Lia.
Yesh, this was a good episode ;_;
I swear Fuuko looks like Tomoya and Nagisa’s daughter in all those images. -.-;
Not bad! they somehow make it work out so well in the theme of “Clannad”
Next week will be a new beginning and fresh arc from Kotomi which is my second fav character in Clannad.
Are you bully me? Hai!
Wow, I thought that I won’t get emotional in this episode because I saw a lot of preview pictures. Everything comes together perfectly. I was little bit disappointed from the last episode, but this one makes up the whole thing.
Totali: Don’t quit yet, man. Fuko will come up in the future. Believe in her. (Kinda like Makoto came back toward the end in Kanon)
Siva: “Not bad!” what are you talking about? This episode isn’t just “not bad”. It’s freaking awesome. BTW, if Kotomi is your second fav, then who is your first one? My fav is Kyou =)
kitsune: If you didn’t tear up…something is wrong! Fuuko~! ;_;
zenical: Watch it! Gogo! Then tear up. :S
Di Gi Kazune: LOL! Well, I’m not that into Noto anymore either. She used to play better roles. :S Also, that parking meter was totally owned.
Halcyon: That seems like what a lot of the game players are saying. I’m more confused as to how they’re going to fit all the stories into 24 episodes.
umehiko: Ooo thanks
. Such a fitting song..
aurabolt: She is their daughter! It’s the DANGO DAIKAZOKU!
Siva: I’m not huge into Kotomi, but I’m sure I’ll grow to appreciate her once I see more. Haha, ijimekko~
kenshin514: No. I’m done with Clannad and all anime!!! FUUKO~! lol…I hope everyone got that I was joking. xD I know she’ll be back. I finally noticed her other appearance in the OP too.
Totali: Good job for adding more people to our alliance. Now we are even!! In the end of this episode show that our alliance will definitely win. Hell yeah.
Analysis for the next coming arc(s): I have a hunch long time ago that they will do Kotomi’s arc next. Her arc seems to be shorter compare to the other heroine. Nagisa’s arc will obviously get the last spot. The better question is which arc gonna be the next one, Kyou/Ryou or Tomoyo.
If they finish Kotomi arc within 3-4 episode then we will have 11 or 12 episodes left, which can divide up evenly for each heroine. In Kanon, they kinda combine both Nayuki and Ayu arc together. I don’t think we can combine Nagisa arc to Kyou/Ryou or Tomoyo stroyline. I don’t think Kyoto animation will do a series for “Tomoyo After: It’s a Wonderful Life”either. So it will be interesting who gonna come after Kotomi and how they gonna wrap up the whole series.
Starfish Alliance banzai!!! Haha, It’s been pretty tied so far, and our turn outs aren’t huge. I guess people are too “cool” to play games with us. Lame!
As far as your analysis goes, yea, they would definitely have to make some of the arcs shorter/combine stories. Obviously the sisters could go together. There’s actually been talk of Clannad going for more than 24 episodes! I’m not sure how that would work out though. Of course, I’ve never played the game, but I know most fans want a fairly large amount of Tomoyo and Kyou.
Excellent, now I can nuke it along with the whatever rival(s) it is against!
Good thing I had my kleenex ready nearby. Lol. It was definitely bittersweet. Still hoping for Fuuko to wakeup. Okazaki and Nagisa trying on calling each other with their first name was adorable with Fuuko pushing them along that path. The students’ appearance at the wedding was touching. Starfish power! The new arc with Kotomi looks interesting.
