Clannad – 10
Cut it out! (pun intended)
Summary:
Light appears all around the boy in the alternate world. When the girl asks the boy about the things around him, she finds that only the light is considered strange. This is something that is normal for the girl, and since the boy finds other things in the world normal, he decides that he must be in an alternate time. In the morning, Tomoya meets Nagisa on the way to school. Kyou runs over Tomoya on her bike, and she finds that Tomoya is more concerned with Nagisa’s safety. This makes her guess that they are going out, but the two deny before she drives off. When Tomoya wonders when he first started calling Nagisa by her first name, the two remember the warm feelings created by Fuuko. While discussing Nagisa and her club with Youhei, Tomoya mentions Kotomi to him. This instantly excites Youhei, causing him to meet Kotomi in her usual study. Youhei is completely ignored, making him realize that he is worlds apart from the famous genius girl.
Tomoya meets Kotomi for himself in the library, and convinces her to see Nagisa about the club. After a more than necessary introduction, Kotomi is given details about what Nagisa needs help with. Kotomi expresses things like how she does not want to cry in the plays, and wonders if Nagisa is a bully. However, Kotomi is won over by Nagisa when she realizes that she shares a similar interest in the Dango Daikazoku. Tomoya leaves Nagisa as he goes with Kotomi to a store after school. Kotomi expresses how great of a person Nagisa is, and even she wonders if Nagisa and Tomoya are going out. After Tomoya tells Kotomi about Kyou, he realizes that she really lives at her own pace. When the two reach a bookstore, Tomoya notices how much Kotomi likes books. He panics when she almost cuts out a page out of a book she takes interest in, and convinces her to buy it instead.
The next day at school, Tomoya introduces Kotomi to Kyou. Kyou only thinks Kotomi’s actions are strange, but she does introduce herself before walking away. Tomoya doesn’t let Kotomi get down from this encounter, as he suggests that she should meet more people. When Tomoya introduces Kotomi to Ryou, she decides to tell Kotomi’s fortune though cards. The result predicts that Kotomi will not be able to make any friends, but Ryou does not let this get to Kotomi. After Ryou agrees to be Kotomi’s friend, Tomoya has preparations made to help her make more friends. When Kotomi meets Tomoyo in her bear suit, she is quickly able to befriend her. When Youhei notices the bear that beat him down previously, he goes in for an attack. However, this only results in another defeat. Tomoya takes Kotomi to visit the older woman he usually gets bread from afterwards, and coincidentally discovers that Kotomi’s parents are well known scholars.
Kyou meets with Tomoya and Kotomi again, suggesting that they take Kotomi to somewhere fun. This place turns out to be Nagisa’s clubroom, displeasing Kyou. Kotomi is unable to break out of the lines she learned from Tomoya, so all of the girls in the room introduce themselves to Kotomi in this way. Tomoya causes trouble when Kyou’s turn comes up, causing Kotomi to become more afraid of her than before. Nagisa finally gains new members for her club, but Kotomi suddenly walks away at the sound of music. Kotomi finds a girl playing violin in another room, and she convinces her to let her play. This turns out to make a monstrous sound for everyone in the room to hear, while an old man in shades approaches outside.
Preview: Nandeyanen??
Impression:
Oh wow, this is ridiculous. I’m seriously laughing at this show just as much as I have with some of the funniest comedies I’ve seen in the past. I didn’t think I could be as excited about this show after Fuuko’s arc ended, but my faith has totally been brought back. Kotomi’s personality is way more quirky than I imagined it would be, producing wonderful results. Her lack of common sense and her repeated use of the phrase “Nandeyanen” have me running out of air. A lot of the humor also came from her meeting of various people that Tomoya introduced her too. I’m sure everyone was all over Kyou’s hugging of her, the forest fire jokes are back in action with her meeting of Tomoyo, and the freaked out expressions from Ryou’s predictions were genius. I’ve had my fortune told by a friend in the past too. It said something like “I would be successful, I would need help to gain that success, and that I would be a nymph”. Yea, I’m not sure what to take from that either. Some of the funniest parts of this episode were really subtle too. It took awhile for the fallen bookshelf to hit, and I’m pretty sure dango aren’t that hard to draw.
With the start of a new arc, we also got back to the little robot’s world. I’m really loving the 3D animation for those scenes, and it is really rare that I find myself enjoying these types of scenes in anime. As much as this episode was supposed to be focused on Kotomi, I found that Kyou got a lot of attention too. They really played the Hiragi sisters’ different personalities out well, and it looks like we’ll even be seeing more of Kyou next week. I thought this fit into the questions of how they would fit everyone’s arc in 24 episodes. A bit unrelated, but I drew a lot of Kimikiss parallels after watching this episode. Tomoya’s introducing the “genius girl” Kotomi to other people was like Eriko’s story, the gathering people for the play is a similar theme, and the two shows even share a lot of the same seiyu. Next week looks a lot of fun with a lot of “Nandeyanen”s and hopefully more head tilting “dame desuka?” moe vibes.

Haha, “ijimekko?” is gonna be my favorite phrase for these few days. Kyoni really did a great transition from Fuku’s arc to Kotomi, which remind me a lot of when they switch from Makoto’s arc to Mai in Kanon.
Some website and even Shirukii said that Clannad may plan for 52 episodes. As far for that goes, I talked to a lot of people and they all said the same thing that it ain’t gonna happen. They all said that Kyoani won’t be stupid enough to make Clannad longer and extend the release date for Haruhi 2. It makes sense since it’s all about business. I mean Haruhi is Kyoani’s most successful series so far. I like Haruhi, but not as much as Kanon or Clannad. Damn you, Haruhi. Yeah, I’m weird and I know that. lol
So better question is how they gonna put everything into 24 episodes. Many people said that after story in Clannad game is superb, but I don’t think they can put it in at this rate. So far, I notice that Kyou and Ryou’s screen time are increase significantly in this episode. They also hint that Ryou has feeling for Tomoya. So many people conclude that they may combine Kyou/Ryou arc into Kotomi’s arc as well (Just like when they did with Ayu and Nayuki).
Man, that would be suck because Kyou is my favorite character and to combine her arc with other heroine is not acceptable to me. Remember how Nayuki got less screen time toward the end of Kanon. I hope that’s not happen with Kyou.
I don’t think extending the episodes is realistic either. In fact, I think it would actually weaken the show. Just because something is longer doesn’t make it better. There’s nothing wrong with taking Shirukii’s word though. He’s a reliable source of information…and my sempai!
Considering the amount of screen time Kyou is getting right now, I wouldn’t be surprised if they did shorten her arc. I do predict a lot of discontent from a lot of fans if they did do that though. I noticed some love interest hints coming from both Kyou and Ryou in this episode, but there’s no way either of them will get between Tomoya and Nagisa by the end. :3
Nande ya nen!?
lol, did you just call the Fujiayashi sisters the Hiiragi sisters? Intentional pun or unintentional slip there?
And about the whole 52 episodes thing, it’s not my word we’re going on, I just heard it mentioned on 4chan that 2ch was speculating the limit may be pushed. I suppose in a business sense it doesn’t make much sense, running a full year series that would overshadow your biggest cash cow. But even if Clannad doesn’t extend another two seasons, I’m not really up for another Haruhi just yet, the hype has been way too strong this past year. Perhaps another FMP for great justice?
Tomoya and Nagisa are surely the couple KyoAni is pushing, but I’m curious to see what Kyou’s feelings are regarding Tomoya. It seems like she’s trying to get him together with Ryou, but I can’t help but feel she’s got a thing for him too.
The Fujiayashi/Hiiragi sisters thing was actually a mistake that I found as I was proofreading, but I decided to leave it there because it was funny. I was also joking about sempai’s source of reliability, but that’s another thing. xD
I’m sick of the Haruhi hype that is still going on too, and another FMP instead would make me very happy in the pants.
Totali: No !!!! Our alliance lost, but it was a close battle. Now on to Dango vs. Starfish. At this rate, we are going to lose quite a lot. Let’s find more people to our alliance for the sake of Fuu chan.
When Kotomi says “Nande ya nen!?,” it reminds me of Otani from Lovely Complex (plus he has Kansai dialect), but of course Kotomi’s “Nande ya nen” is way better than Otani.
Haha, I miss the Hiiragi/Fujibayashi sisters thing. I pretty sure some people will get it mix up too. I mean, look at them. Both older sisters have long hair and little bit temper and both younger sisters short hair and shy.
Oh well, I’m done with final. Time for anime marathon. Any recommend, Totali? (You can check my lists through the link). I want to finish 9 more series by the end of this year (to make my 100 complete series). Yeah, I know. It’s not that a lot compared to you, but at least it’s something. BTW, you already know my favorite animes what’s yours?
lol stars/starfish was close, but starfish lost to dango by a landslide. ;_;
This is so ironic! I just finished marathoning Lovely Complex a few days ago (and loved it), and now there are all these fans coming out of the woods about it during comments! Man, I love kansai.
I’m done with all my work up until finals, and I’ve basically got 4 days to spend waiting to take 2 joke finals (an easy grade in class essay and an art project presentation). That’s why I’ve been more hasty with comment replies and the such. I usually refer people to my aS when they want suggestions, but it seems like everyone is getting a MyAnimeList! I have one, but I haven’t worked on it at all. Maybe I’ll have to do that this weekend. If you ask me my top anime, I would never be able to make a real list (too many choices). Honey and Clover currently has the top spot, though.

This is what i expect from Kotomi.
What? another FMP? I barely saved my life after loling too hard when i was watching Fumoffu.
@Totali: I am kind of having a hard time to understand ur anime rating. Honey and Clover is another must-watch for me, everywhere i went i never saw it in the second place.
Are you talking about my AnimeSeen list? You can sort things in different ways with the drop down on the side. I only rate my things up to 10, and there’s no top 10 list or anything (cause I can’t make one). Argh, I really need to work on my MAL….everyone is over there. ><
Kotomi is adorable! Her indifference and her quest to be better with social interaction is fun to watch. Her little conversation with Nagisa when they first met was funny. I wonder who the suspicious guy at the end is. I also think we might get to know more of her family soon considering her response when her scholar parents was brought up. It was a good start for a new arc.
Lovely Complex rocks! I very much enjoyed watching and blogging that one. Honey and Clover is definitely one of my all-time favorites too. I was doing MAL recently and got hooked on adding stuff on the list… it’s quite a challenge to remember the titles I’ve seen from way back and rating them.
The suspicious guy at the end made me think of Shakugan no Shana for some reason. It doesn’t help that both shows air on the same day. ;P
[...] pie for Tomoya, and more. I know that some bloggers just didn’t take well to Kotomi , but others have, a matter of opinion I suppose. Although I would suspect that her moeness is less in dispute then [...]
