Clannad - 12

Hmm…..where have I seen that stuffed animal before!

Summary:

Kotomi thanks a female student for letting her borrow the violin she has been using. Kotomi goes on to request to be her friend, so the girl readily agrees. Tomoya expresses how nice it is for Kotomi to be gaining friends while walking with her in the hall, but Kotomi notices a tear coming out of her eye. Tomoya and Nagisa go to visit Kotomi later, and they find that students have already started to approach her more easily. Tomoya finds Kyou putting Kotomi’s jokes down in the clubroom later, but Kotomi shows the group what she can do shortly afterwards. Over lunch, Kyou decides that everyone meet the next day. While enjoying themselves in town, it is revealed by the group that Kotomi’s birthday is soon. With this, Kyou decides to get her a present.

Kyou fails many times at a claw game, and finds that the others to not have the confidence to try either. Suddenly, Fuuko appears to help. She seemingly has the ability to get the prize, but she ends up walking away with a star plushy to the group’s confusion instead. The group ends up not getting the gift they wanted, and Tomoya notices that Kotomi is spaced out afterwards. Tomoya and Kotomi part ways with the rest of the group that night. Kotomi thanks Tomoya, and gives him a book that she has wanted him to have. Tomoya wonders if she wants him to read it, but she states that she only wants him to have it. Kotomi suddenly notices the old man from before, so she quickly runs away with Tomoya. Tomoya wonders what relationship Kotomi has with the man while they hide, but Kotomi is unable to give an answer.

Tomoya has a dream of a younger and crying Kotomi, where the old man attempted to put out flames in front of her. Around the area are a rabbit, a deer, and a young boy. Kotomi meets Tomoya in the morning, preforming an embarrassing act set up by Kyou. A panicked Nagisa suddenly shows up, telling Kyou of the bus accident that might involve Ryou. Kyou panics, but it turns out that Ryou is fine. The group is relieved, but they look to find Kotomi in panic not too far away. The group attempts to visit Kotomi in the infirmary later, but they find that she has already gone home. They do not know the details because of privacy issues, but the nurse does give them permission to visit Kotomi. The group finds that Kotomi’s home is seemingly empty, but Tomoya cannot help but sense something.

Tomoya leaves the group to return to Kotomi’s house, finding the old man there. The man finally introduces himself as an acquaintance of Kotomi’s parents, so Tomoya wonders if he is there to visit them. The man then realizes that Kotomi has kept quiet about some information, going on to talk about Kotomi’s family with Tomoya. The man gives Tomoya a message for Kotomi before parting with him. He does not want forgiveness, but he wants Kotomi to know that he regrets that time of the past. Still uneasy, Tomoya begins to search around Kotomi’s home. Remembering Kotomi’s words and following a black moth, Tomoya begins to see a different vision of the now unkept surrounding. When Tomoya enters the house to find Kotomi in her empty room, he realizes that they have met before in the past.

Impression:

Wow, just when I thought this show couldn’t get any funnier……it gets depressing again. With the short revealing of Tomoya and Kotomi’s shared past, I’m starting to really like this arc. Key’s use of the dream theme is apparent in all of the works I’ve seen from them, but there’s always a different approach to it. My eyes were wide open by the end of this episode, especially with the moth flying around. The old man had already hinted that something was up with Kotomi’s parents, and I think we can now all assume how that will end up. Seeing another part of Kotomi, particularly the panicking one, was very refreshing as well. I can’t wait to see more, as this arc seems a lot darker when compared to the rest we’ve been seeing up to this point.

On another note, I was totally psyched when Fuuko showed up out of nowhere. Hmm, let me look in my notes too see what I wrote…..Ok, found it. “Huh……? OMG FUUKO!! and the party hat!!! OMG” …Yes, I love Fuuko. I also liked Kyou’s helping of Kotomi, and her change of attitude when she heard about her sister. I am starting to see why so many people like her. They even inserted boob humor for Kotomi out of nowhere. I was looking forward to more kansai gags from Kotomi next week, but it seems like Clannad will be delayed for about two weeks. I guess that frees up Thursday for awhile…

Wow…….. You are lot faster than OMNI.. Well, it seems like this will be a very dramatic episode and tomoya will sure have its big role in this.. Well thx for the review and 1st COMMENT.

The Fuko bit caught me completely offguard- I thought we were about to see Kyou’s magic girl transformation again. Anyone else catch Fuko’s “newtype flash”? Classic!

And I’ve settled on Kyou as my favorite (for now anyway). I think it’s the lack of supernatural drama around her at this point that makes her my fave.

kencute321: Mmmm I’m usually not, nor do I try to be faster than Omni xD. But yea, this episode was pretty awesome towards the second half.

M: Fuuko~~~~ <3 XD And yea, Kyou is just so normal….I think that’s her charm. Like, she’s realistic when compared to the other girls with strange personalities. ;P

Am I the only one here think that Kotomi’s arc is similar to Mai’s arc? They both are the second arc of the series. Tomoya doesn’t remember Kotomi in the past until this episode kinda like Yuuichi did to Mai. Both Mai and Kotomi have very dried humor and somehow the past cause them to be this way. I don’t mind about that. Mai is my favorite character in Kanon, so this make me like Kotomi even more. But still my Kyou is the best!!

Yeah, when Fuuko came out, I was like “WTF?????”. And when I thought she gonna grab the big doll, but then she just grab STARFISH instead. I was like “WTH????” Man, that scene should prove STARFISH is the real mascot for Clannad, right Totali?

Totali: Kyou’s mischievous nature is awesome, too! I love the way she unabashedly admits guilt for her pranks lol

Kenshin: It’s not a starfish, it’s a STAR! Wait, why did I say that? :D

Well, and here I thought Fuuko was going to wake up towards the very end. I never thought she would make cameo appearances.

Wow, why no1 mention about a big hint from the book?
After finished the episode, it seems like Kotomi knew anything about Tomoya from the beginning that both of them are friend when they were kid. But why she didn’t told him is not the big deal anymore and the big deal is what was written in the book, who wrote it, whose book is that, and why did she gave it to him?

@kenshin514: what do you think about Fuko’s arc similar to Makoto’s arc? Aren’t they both the first arc and disappear?

@M December: why did you say that? Because it is the way we live our life in this world. Everything that look like star everyone will call it STAR, am i right?

hahahaha! Fuko returns in an amazing cameo appearance!
that was pretty hilarious and them not knowing her was like adding fuel to the fire XDD
the part when kotomi was making a joke in the beginning funny as well. who would have thought kotomi was good at comedy like that? (Kyou was about to laugh)

and then there were sad parts. the bus crash putting kotomi into a mental breakdown was really unexpected although kinda knew it was gonna happen. looks like were gonna see how both of them knew each other from the past next week.

My eyes widen as well totali when he was walking on that bushy path with the moth. (i though it was a butterfly?) Im guessing the moth might have some sort of connection to the arc itself. though its just a feeling

@Siva: Well, I’m not sure whether you tried to ask me a question or tried to point out something to me. I just think that Mai and Kotomi are similar in some way. Like their haunted past, have dried sense of humor, knew the main character when they were kid, and etc. Then again, you’re right. Those stuff are just minor things. The story -line are different. I mean, you can say that my comparison was kinda shallow. However, both series came from Key’s work, so there got to be something similar to each other, right? Also, there is no comparison here between Fuuko and Makoto. I really like Fuuko and really hate Mokoto. When Makoto’s arc was over, I was dancing with joy because I could watch other arc instead. While Fuuko’s arc was over, I was like “No !! I wanted more.”

  10. Totali December 23rd, 2007 1:56 pm

kenshin514: You could be right. Wow, I remember really liking Mai from Kanon…but it took me awhile to remember about her XD. Starfish own dangos…..those guys at Arimasu….hmmph!

M: “That would be me!” LOL

ItAintEazy: cameo appearance for GREAT JUSTICE!

Siva: Well, I’m sure the book will play a major role in this arc, but there’s just not much revealed about it at this point.

stevelikesanime: I think Kyou was about to laugh at how bad it was XD. I’m pretty sure it was a moth because of its relation to fire. Plus it was black.

Damn, damn, damn, damn. I promised my sister I wouldn’t watch any new episodes without her so now I can’t even watch this! It looks so great. Kotomi is so cute but she looks so freaked out in the third last cap. It makes me want to watch it so bad.
