All in all this show was kind of disappointing as it sabotaged itself to semi-”Strawberry Marshmallow” semi-”S-Y-A-D L-O-O-H-C-S” bastard child while not being up to the quality of either.

I finally watched this episode, and it did not disappoint me! This show could be among the best shows of the year; I hope they end it well.

Just to make one thing clear: I’ve never been a fan of Reiji and I’ve never liked him. What I’ve learned from following this series, however, is that making assumptions about any aspect of it is extremely dangerous. Mistaken assumptions by thin-skinned anime fans was what got this series cancelled, mistaken assumptions about whether Aoki was a closet pedophile or not played a role in their judgement, etc.

Kaworu Watashiya seems to derive some morbid enjoyment from using misdirection in this manga and screwing with the minds of her audience. The series, which is essentially a coming-of-age dramedy with farcical elements and psychological analyses of is characters thrown in, was purposely wrapped in a Lolicon shell and marketed as such in many ways even though it’s clear to anyone who’s bothered reading the entire thing that it’s anything but that.

I’m just going to sit back for the ride and assume nothing until I see a smoking gun.

You may have a point about giving him sympathy since he’s messed up.I gave up on that though when he started really acting like a complete retard(manga) and counted the days till Rin turns 16 so he can screw her.(If anyone can symphatized with that then there’s something wrong)

C-C-C-COMBO BREAKER!

You know, as much as I dislike Reiji, I think this episode cheapens his character immensely by turning him from a complex character into your dime-a-dozen psychopath. Yes, his unhealthy obsession with his cousin’s daughter because of his inability to deal with her death and a traumatic childhood have screwed him up in the head six ways from sunday, but the manga allows him to retain some sympathy from the audience and makes them wonder about whether he can let go of his anger, grief, and hatred before it’s too late. Based on this episode, it looks like the anime’s pretty much spoonfeeding us the idea that he’s irredeemable and well down the path of (self-)destruction.

Well, to be honest, I didn’t read your whole post before I compulsively did the first comment, so it wasn’t until later that I realized I was obliquely mentioned *orz*. For the record, I despise and and all people who make demands that they be namedropped or blogrolled, and beginning that practice would only encourage them.
