Rosario Vampire – 01

Oh yea, that Gonzo fanservice show airs today!

Summary:

While on the way to his new school, Aono Tsukune recalls how he was placed in this situation. After returning from school from one day, his parents had excitedly announced his father’s lucky encounter with a priest. With this, Tsukune would be sent to school no matter how his grades were. In the present time, the bus driver warns Tsukune about the school he will soon be entering. He also gets a call from one of his worried acquaintances, Kyo, before arriving at a complete change of scenery. While walking to his destination, Tsukune is soon hit by a girl on a bike. He discovers that this girl is extremely beautiful, before attempting to get out of the awkward situation he has just put himself in. When the girl sees that Tsukune has a nosebleed, she hurries to wipe it off. She is quickly drawn to the scent of the blood, however, taking the chance as a vampire to bite Tsukune on the neck. The girl backs off afterwards, revealing that she is also a transfer student. She finally introduces herself as Akashiya Moka, expressing her gladness that she could have a friend to enter with. Tsukune is very happy when he sees that his teacher, Nekonome Shizuka, is also very attractive. However, he panics when she reveals that the school is for youkai. When Shizuka reveals that any humans who are found in this hidden school will be killed, Tsukune has trouble keeping his composure. Moka enters late, however, quickly jumping on top of Tsukune in her happiness that they are in the same class.

While walking with Moka around campus afterwards, Tsukune is only able to believe that he is dreaming. He takes a break with Moka to have a drink, but the two are interrupted by the rude classmate from earlier, Komiya Saizo. He sends Tsukune flying into a vending machine in order to get closer to Moka, but Moka quickly runs to Tsukune’s aid. Moka jokingly expresses that it looks as if that was the first time Tsukune has seen a youkai later, while he brings up Moka’s own revealing that she was a vampire earlier. Moka states that this was because she did not know of the school’s rules, and goes on to reveal what would happen if the rosario above her chest was removed. Moka admits that Tsukune’s blood was the first she had ever tasted while getting closer to him, but this makes Tsukune run away in fear. By the time Moka catches up to Tsukune, he expresses his wish to go to a human school. This makes Moka state her hatred for humans, and the experiences she had while attending a human school in the past. With this, Tsukune finally reveals to Moka that he is human. Unable to face Moka, he continues to run. Moka chases after him, but she is stopped by Saizo.

Saizo transforms against the school’s rules to assault Moka, forcing Tsukune to return to her. Tsukune is easily thrown to the side by Saizo, but Moka quickly runs to him again. She reveals that she had actually hoped to have friends while attending the human school, as if it did not matter if she was a youkai. Tsukune attempts to stand up to Saizo, but with little effect. At Moka’s side, he also expresses his wish that he could be friends with a youkai. He states his liking of Moka, before pulling off her rosario in the middle of losing his remaining strength. With this, Moka transforms into the true vampire she claimed she would be earlier. Saizo is instantly struck with fear, and is quickly defeated by Moka. Afterwards, Moka approaches Tsukune and catches him as he faints into her chest. When Tsukune wakes next to Moka, he finally realizes that he would be unable to leave right away via bus. Moka wipes off some of Tsukune’s blood, before taking another chance to bite him on the neck.

ED: “COSMIC LOVE” by Nana Mizuki – This is actually the OP song, but they just ran through various scenes while playing it for this week’s ED. Hey still, it’s Mizuki Nana.

Impression:

Gonzo sucks, this isn’t Seto no Hanayome, and I will not be touching this show with a ten foot pole. ………is what I originally wanted to say, but to be honest, I can totally see myself enjoying this. Yes, there were a ridiculous amount of pantie shots. Yes, the animation was ridiculous (3D stairs!? Oh god, HAHAHA). And yes, the plot was ridiculous. I’m a total love comedy sucker though, and this is really right up my alley. Rosario Vampire is kind of like a cross with Karin and Kaibutsu Oujo, and I liked both. I also laughed quite a bit during this episode, during both intentional and unintentional moments. I have had a horrible experience with a certain fanservice show this past season, but I don’t think this one will be as bad. I wouldn’t say this would replace Clannad or Shana on my lineup either, and I’m wanting to try to keep the number of shows I blog this season limited, but my blogging schedule has definitely gotten more flexible as of late. I’ll see what kind of coverage this show gets around the rest of the blogsphere, and I might end up giving it late Thursday or Friday treatment. If anything, Mizuki Nana playing a main role and those hilarious Batman BGM transformations are enough to keep me interested.

Hey, first comment! Anyway, this anime sounds really cool and the pictures are nice. But I really don’t like girls with long pink hair and stuff like that. Oh well, I might watch it for all the vampire action! Thanks for blogging it!

Gonzo sucks, this isn’t Seto no Hanayome, and I will not be touching this show with a ten foot pole.

You should have left it at that xDDDD

  3. Rentington January 3rd, 2008 9:42 pm

I’ve read the Manga. It’s like part Kaibutsu Oujo, part Ninomiya-kun, but the actually good. I hope the anime is good, too.

  4. Rentington January 3rd, 2008 9:46 pm

Well, let’s just say “Better” and leave it at that.

  5. Totali January 3rd, 2008 9:52 pm

ShadowFang: If all you want is vampire fighting you might be disappointed honestly. I dunno though lol.

Hinano: LOL I really might….the Winter season’s Thursday shows are like…”those shows that I might watch because they’re not as bad as that other show” xD

Rentington: I’ve heard mixed reviews about the manga, but I haven’t read it. It definitely sounds like episodic fighting/fanservice stuff though.

  6. Rentington January 3rd, 2008 10:00 pm

Yeah, I’d say that would be about right. It’s a “monster of the week” deal. I wouldn’t call it good. I’d just call it.. better than the most recent monster of the week harem, “Kaibutsu Oujo.” Very repetitive.

“Gonzo sucks, this isn’t Seto no Hanayome, and I will not be touching this show with a ten foot pole.”
Gonzo has been doing so many shows recently…It’s crazy. Gonzo has (and will likely) never been a great studio to me.

    “3D stairs!? Oh god, HAHAHA”
I first heard from the promo, 3D DESKS..It’s NOT HARD TO DRAW A DESK!

    And BTW.
The Kaibutsu Oujo anime was horrible anime adaption of a manga that is great and has awesome characters. MADHOUSE should be smacked because of that.

  8. Totali January 3rd, 2008 10:17 pm

Wait whaaaattttt? But the Kaibutsu anime had Kawasumi Ayako, Shimizu Ai, and Noto Mamiko….and ALI PROJECT!!!

Eh, jk. The animation was definitely pretty bad, and I initially dropped it because of that (back in my super nubie blogging days). I really liked the characters though, and the ending disappointed me because it was obviously unfinished.

  9. Rentington January 3rd, 2008 10:26 pm

I loved the Ending Theme on Kaibutsu. They have an interesting dynamic on this show: A character shows up, tries to kill him, he pulls of the Rosary of the pink haired girl and she goes vampire, he begs her to not kill the new character, the new character moves into the class and falls in love with the main dude because he spared her life. Wait, that’s every harem. Harem anime is my guilty pleasure. shh… It is what it is. I’ve been a fan of anime for a very short time, just the past 9 months or so. But, I realized very quickly how formulaic it all is. 90 percent of anime is the following:

________ was just your average high school student until one day, a mysterious ________ appeared and he began an adventure that would change his life forever.

How many does that cover? Probably 90 percent.

  10. IKnight January 3rd, 2008 11:26 pm

Hmm, I recall the manga, which was low quality, high entertainment. I may write a little on this myself, though not entirely seriously.

  11. aurabolt January 3rd, 2008 11:27 pm

I see, you have gone to that side. See you later then, totali. May we meet again. :P

Well, I see where you’re going when you say it’s not as bad as other shows. There are two types of anime watchers. Those (true fans) who watch whatever that is offered, and those who get… picky with the choices. Of course, I fall in the latter and would rather prefer to completely skip out on this season.

  12. Leon January 3rd, 2008 11:39 pm

As a fan of the manga I’m going to be covering this for sure. I think. XD

  13. [...] details of what happened, but it was just too gay for me. You can head over to Random Curiosity or Subculture Anime Blog where the summary of this episode totally owns [...]

  14. Tokki January 3rd, 2008 11:57 pm

Why does everyone freaken diss Gonzo? Gonzo is one of my favorite animation company\producers.

  15. Totali January 4th, 2008 12:46 am

Rentington: lol wut, that sounds like a similar conversation going on at my favorite animu blog. But yea, I mean what do you expect? With so much anime, there’s no way everything will be original. Some new things are brought to the table, but for the most part we’re given generic stuff so that we lame anime fans can get our fix ;P. Also duuuude….you just spoiled like…half the show for me with that generic summary!! OMG lol

IKnight: lol that sounds about right. If you ever do, tell me and I’ll go read it. xD

aurabolt: Being able to watch every horrible show that comes out during the season makes me a true anime fan? This is the first time I’ve heard! lol, but really….it’s definitely not a sure thing that I’ll blog this…even though I’m almost certain that I’ll end up watching it.

Leon: lol if you do that might tip the scales for me a bit more to let others handle it.

Tokki: ….because they make bad shows? xD The only two shows I’ve honestly liked from them have been Seto no Hanayome and NHK ni Youkoso.

  16. Di Gi Kazune January 4th, 2008 12:49 am

Then make it another person here to diss Gonzo the muppet animation company.

VAs + someinsanelyfamousstudiohere do not make a good show. It’s the way they do it that is how it should be judged.

    aurabolt>

Those (true fans) who watch whatever that is offered, and those who get… picky with the choices

you mean the truely rabid and mindless fans vs the sane fans.

Excuse me while I drool on more Ren-cha… err… Reika.

  17. Zeroblade January 4th, 2008 1:41 am

The only reasons why I would watch this are: (a) Nana Mizuki, and (b) you don’t need to think properly to watch the show.

  18. Rentington January 4th, 2008 1:57 am

Lolz, if that spoiled the show for you… well, let’s just say the show was spoiled from the beginning.

  19. Orihime January 4th, 2008 4:31 am

This anime is pretty cool, I love vampires but there r only a few vamp animes I actually like. Hopefully this will stay funny and not get wrapped up in too much fan service lol

  20. LazyMcChan January 4th, 2008 6:42 am

Weeelll, it does move away slightly from the ‘monster of the week’ tune…I really enjoy the manga, it’s become one of my favorites but I’m not sure if the anime will capture it well.

  21. [...] lame (even though the true vampire transformation with the bats at the end looks so darn cool). Totali’s comment on Rosario + Vampire does not help to solve the issue for me, and I must say that it is the [...]

  22. Totali January 4th, 2008 1:39 pm

Di Gi Kazune: lol what the…I think you posted this right when I was going through a reply sweep…again! Looks like someone else shares my views about bad anime? ;D

Zeroblade: Heh, reasonable. Mizuki’s new role is somewhat weird for me right now though, just having finished Strikers like 3 days ago. xD

Rentington: LOL …..no man, no! You spoiled me and…..I’m pissed!!11

Orihime: There are also only a few vampire anime that actually exist. I’ve heard that all of the ridiculous fanservice is all Gonzo, and it wasn’t in the manga. =\

LazyMcChan: Another case of “I liked the source material but the anime ruins it” perhaps? ;D

  23. The Flame Wizard January 4th, 2008 7:56 pm

Psh. The 1st episode is out. So I heard there’re a few 50-50s on this.

One 50 is that ‘they suck’. But then the other 50 says the series made a good LOL anyway for the least. Well, I care less whether it sucks totally or not, I’ll watch. Because practically I watch for the sake of doing it XP

I’ll see how much can I find my own contradictions although I won’t say anything about it either. ¬_¬

  24. Kabitzin January 5th, 2008 1:38 am

This one seemed to me to be complete suck. The real killer for me is the bad bad art. Could have been a lot better if the characters didn’t look so badly drawn.

  25. Di Gi Kazune January 5th, 2008 5:11 am

That’s the spirit! Just watch it for the sake of watching it. Which was what ninomiyakun was >_>

The thing is that there are fanbois that think otherwise.

  26. ItAintEazy January 5th, 2008 10:20 am

Wow, that’s 25 minutes someone owes me. I got so bored I resorted to counting the panty shots (there were at least 21 BTW).

  27. Totali January 5th, 2008 2:04 pm

The Flame Wizard: It’s 50/50 because the story/characters are decent, but the studio animating the series is doing a horrible job.

Kabitzin: Yea, that was pretty ridiculous. But you know, It’s common knowledge that I watch a lot of bad anime. ;D

Di Gi Kazune: I guess you could put it that way. I’m pretty sure I hated Ninomiya more than I would have if I didn’t blog it/it got so much hype from other psychos.

ItAintEazy: That was actually done somewhere else already lol. I dunno how long it will take for you to get more minutes back. You know how returns are in this season!

  28. Leon January 5th, 2008 2:41 pm

As a fan of the manga…I must blog this!

  29. Di Gi Kazune January 5th, 2008 4:06 pm

Good luck because you’re going to get more nosebleeds from watching one episode of the anime than reading the whole manga series.

  30. Shippoyasha January 6th, 2008 3:49 am

Hmm, I think Gonzo is doing a pretty decent job. Not great, not bad, just middling.

LOL at “OMG GONZO SUCKS”. I actually like Gonzo decently, though I have to agree their consistency isn’t all that great. Not that stuff like Rosario probably needs that kind of consistency of something like Production IG shows.

[...] more traditionally formatted take on the first episode is provided by the Subculture Anime [...]

  32. Rentington January 7th, 2008 7:47 am

Okay, I saw it. I thought the animation was better than a lot of the crap I have watched. But, to be fair, I watch a lot of crap. And I mean CRAP anime. Comparatively, for a fanservice harem, this looks like Gurren-Lagann compared to most of it’s peers, and it was still pretty mediocre. With that being said: On to the fanservice.

I mean come the **** on. Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with a little fanservice, but you gotta be a little more reserved or else it’s just too distracting. It’s not a panty-shot if it is perpetual. Eh, whatever.

As for the plot, I expect them to jump around the first five episodes to make sure the 4 girls from the manga all get in early, as I anticipate this is a 13 episode show. It’s a pretty episodic manga, so it won’t make a difference.

I’ll give it a few weeks, but it’s a pretty outlandish idea for a story. I expect it to be ultimately forgettable.

  34. Zakarum January 9th, 2008 6:50 pm

Finally took a look at this and… dear God, this was painful to watch. Was there ever a scene WITHOUT her damn panties showing?? Was the bukakke-fest really necessary? And did they have to emphasize the growth of (already ample) tits and ass during vampire transformation?

It might, however, become fun to watch simply to see how stupid it is and laugh at the ridiculous fanservice. I’m looking at you, Ninomiya-kun. Speaking of which, there seems to be a succubus next episode. I wouldn’t be surprised if it was Mayu.

  35. stevelikesanime January 10th, 2008 11:40 pm

wow i was totally impressed on this first episode.
I could see myself into watching this because of my weakness to love comedies. This show will be much better than ninomiya-kun and that will be my impression til something horrible comes up, til then, this is a definite watch for me.

    Kappuchuuuuuuuu!!!!!
