Persona -trinity soul- – 01

OP: “Breakin’ Through” by Shūhei Kita – Hey, I actually really like the OP. The song is catchy, and the animation is stylish. It reminds me a lot of the Tokyo Majin and Death Note OPs.

Summary:

A small girl falls through the water in the middle of the sea. On a boat above, several people are seemingly on an investigation. A higher up named Kanzato Ryo arrives via helicopter, ready to start his job. When this group looks into a vessel, they find that no one is inside. A boy named Kanzato Shin wakes in panic while on a plane ride, making his brother Jun wonder if he has been having strange dreams about transforming and battling again. Shin brings up the bother of them being around when their aunt who has finally gotten a boyfriend, but this isn’t what Jun is worried about. The siblings get stuck at the airport upon their arrival, and find that they will not be able to leave any time soon. Shin brings up how small their family is, but Jun makes him realize how distanced they are before suggesting that they get something to eat. Ryo reports the findings of his missing persons case while driving, and relays the similarity of another case to the man on the other end. He gets a call from a woman afterwards, who reports the progress on a “Powers”. Ryo meets with the woman, as she shows him the results of an autopsy. This is the third victim, and the person was still a high school student. This makes the woman mention Ryo’s siblings, who he confirms are doing well.

Jun and Shin finally arrive at their new home, but Shin finds that the locks have been changed. Jun goes out to the back, making Shin recall memories that deal with the logs there and their sister named Yuki. Jun does not believe that he had ever spent time with his older brother, but Shin tells him that he just does not remember. While looking through a list of victims, Ryo gets a call from an officer named Kataima. He lets out a desperate scream, making Ryo realize what has happened. Kataima has certainly been killed, so the investigator Narasaki researches the scene of the crime with other officers. Some strange things are found at the site, and Ryo quickly takes off in his car when Narasaki is unable to reach certain people. Jun and Shin are eating at a dinner, when Shin is distracted a fighting couple in the distance. Jun sees a sketch that Shin has been drawing, which he confirms is the monster that he saw in his dreams.

Ryo finally makes it to his destination, where a man has been in the middle of stealing a woman’s persona. Using his own powers to fend the man off, Ryo successfully saves the woman. He leaves her to the other officers, before taking off again without giving them a clear report. Shin passes by a fortune teller with his brother, but panics when the man tells him that he has already awakened. This is just another one of Shin’s dreams, however, and he is waken up by his older brother Ryo. Ryo wonders why his two younger brothers were unable to enter the house, revealing the hidden key and the password dealing with their family birthdays. As the brothers get settled in, Jun can’t help but look at his distant older brother. Shin unwraps several small statues in his room, one of them being the fortune teller he saw in his dream. Shin tells his brothers that he is going to the convenience store, but he really goes to the spot he visited in his dream. He finds that the area is barren, but he is drawn to a warehouse after hearing a man’s screams. He sees the man panicking inside, as a persona generates from his body. This attacks Shin, but his own persona defends him. Slightly bewildered, Shin points to the sky.

ED: “SUICIDES LOVE STORY” by Nana Kitade – I love the artistic approach with this ED, but the animation is standard flare. The song fits the mood, but isn’t something that I’d usually get excited about.

Preview: Development, more revealing of Shin’s persona, and all that jazz. Hearing Sawashiro Miyuki’s voice over was kind of awkward because I couldn’t help but be reminded of Ninomiya.

Impression:

Hey, this was pretty cool. I originally didn’t plan on checking this out until later, but I was surprised at how little coverage it was getting. This show was getting quite a bit of hype before the season started, and from what I gather, the game it is based off of is pretty popular. The cast is pretty strong, even though none of the seiyu are my favorite. There was Sawashiro Miyuki (Red Garden, Ninomiya-kun), Okamoto Nobuhiko (Potemayo, sola), and Koyasu Takehito (Gundam SEED, Initial D). Hearing Sawashiro Miyuki as Jun was probably the most awkward, since I recognize her the most from her role as Claire in Red Garden. I seriously thought Jun was a girl at first. The animation was pretty good, and I was instantly reminded of Tokyo Majin. It could be because they are both based on games, or the similar direction. Maybe it was just because of the animax logo staying all over the screen, haha. I did smirk at the silly rap rock bgm that played during one of the action scenes, but I’m really not fazed after a show like Devil May Cry. Like I said, I was pretty interested with the story in this episode even though I haven’t played the game. I’d probably check this out in a marathon later, but it’s really not even anything close to something I would usually blog.

For Koyasu Takehito you could just say “(Every anime known to man)” xDDDD

The anime is instant win if you ever played Persona 3 or any Persona series before. I’m amazed when I heard that fortune teller’s voice and I realize it’s really Igor. (one of key character from the series)

At first I got pissed a little when I heard Meguro didn’t did the music for the series. But a few BGM used in this episode is actually from the game (the one in the cafe, Igor scene and the end of A-Part if I’m not misremember things). So um, I guess the currently person did a good job.

As a person who really liked the game, this sure is in my watch list. Hope there’ll be more connection from the game!

Hinano: LOL so true. Every time I hear that guy’s voice I facepalm.

Nai: I’ve actually been hearing mixed reviews from those who have actually played the game. From your point of view though, it seems like they did a pretty good job. :O

    another game fan here :)

it’s a shame they ditched the Evokers (in the game the kids bring out their personas by shooting themselves in the head with a special gun) but I’m not really surprised.

Lold at Igor: I’m just hoping that Elizabeth puts in an appearance too.

Yea, I think any fan of the game is a bit disappointed that the evokers are gone… I am… Oh well, at least I have a few shows to watch on Saturdays now

Sawashiro Miyuki can do both girls and boys. Definately boys. >_> But is cutest when she goes めからびいーむ

i haven’t played the game before but this really looks interesting. I’m definitely going to check this out when it gets subbed.

Apparently, the use of Evokers was a bit too “controversial” to be shown in TV, so they did away with it. Which is just…an odd decision to make, considering that you can have blatant tits and asses fanservice as well as gore, but not suicidal implications?

I loved the game… until it ran out of creative steam by November, then I got bored with it. But, to be fair, that was about 60 hours in. It’s the most addictive game ever when you first get it. Takes your soul. It’s kinda like “O-kami” on PS2. Awesome, but doesn’t reward you much as you go on.

Anyway, will look forward to this one. I liked the tone of the game, which is like a lot of post-evangelion Japanese cartoons, where they do crazy messed up things at night, and go to school and have drama and problems there like nothing ever happened. So they took out the evokers? That’s lame. I always thought the guns were totally Donnie Trumps. But, what can you do?

  10. Totali January 7th, 2008 8:03 pm

panda: I’ve been hearing so much about that, lol. I’m not surprised at all that they would take something like that out, but I would have really liked to see the people shooting themselves in the face xDD

kitsune: It’s actually a Saturday show, but I just blogged it on Sunday because of the ridiculous flood of shows on Saturday :S

Di Gi Kazune: lol I finally put two and two together and figured out your references to that seiyu…I’m slow ;D. I might have to pick up Di Gi Charat soon….is it ok if I just watch panyo panyo? That’s all I have atm, and the older stuff looks way too old school for my tastes. I watched Winter Garden recently too…it was funny. ;P

eipu: I was definitely surprised. I think this show will get good sub treatment because of its already established popularity, so you probably don’t need to worry.

Hemisphere: Hey, it’s japan. They cancel shows like Higurashi and School Days when a real tragedy happens, but they let mahou shoujo lolis run wild.

Rentington: Heh, I’m not nearly as active of a gamer as I used to be. I think WoW killed too much of my want to. Like I implied, I still enjoy games like DMC that are just easy to pick up and play though. Heh, I know what you mean about the atmosphere of this show. I actually have a soft spot for those types of shows.

  11. Di Gi Kazune January 7th, 2008 8:31 pm

No it is NOT okay to watch panyo panyo alone! You must be subjected to the cute insanity that is the original! Look at what hinano did to JP! >_>

now i’ve watched the sub: that bit towards the end with Jun is properly creepy.

from the preview it looks like the next episode is a school-based one – i’m interested to see if they keep the dating sim elements of the game.

my only minor complaint is that it’s quite hard to see what’s going on in the persona fights, what with them being semi-transparent and all.

  13. Rentington January 10th, 2008 8:39 pm

I wasn’t impressed. Unless somebody tells me something gnarly happens, I don’t think I’ll watch this one.

  14. Hemisphere January 14th, 2008 11:52 am

Now that I’ve seen the episode, I can honestly say that it blew me away. Of course, that’s because I’ve played the game, and can recognize various references to characters and events of Persona 3 from the get-go. Akihiko working with Ryo? Definitely awesome, though I do miss the Evokers. Igor telling Shun that they met before in the Velvet Room, same with Minato? Consider me sold on this one.

Are they somehow trying to link Shun with Arisato Minato? And are those Fuuka and Junpei shown in the next episode trailer? With the resurgence of Apathy Syndrome…does that mean that the Personas of people are degenerating into Shadows thanks to the Nyx incident? The pills that the man was taking, are those the same pills that Strega members were taking? Maybe I’ll get to find out the answers to these questions…or maybe these questions aren’t even in the anime in the first place.

    Nevertheless, I’m hooked.

  15. [...] seems to be getting quite better since her early days. (I almost forgot that she did the ED to Persona as well, which I really liked.) [...]
