Thank you for the explanations. The episode’s first part was making no sense.

In reference to the question about the end part of the first section, maybe the “Goku”/Perry was going to change to Kenshirou (of First of the North Star) instead of being Goku. ^^;; Which, I agree with Itoshiki, isn’t much of a change. ^^;;

Yeah kanji are nice to know. In fact, once you know basic meanings of enough kanji, even if you can’t read them you can guess what they mean by the individual kanji that compose the word. It can actually get easier than spoken Japanese sometimes!

Well, I don’t suppose you could say it’s wrong… Oguro Yuichiro probably figured that anime-viewers were more likely to recognize a story relating to DBZ than they were to recognize the history of Commodore Perry’s use of implied force to open Japan’s borders to US trade. The confusing part was how sometimes they called him Goku, and a few times they did call him Perry. They also made the mistake with July 13th, because it was supposed to be July 14th that Commodore Perry came ashore in Kurihama…

This isn’t the first time an anime has deviated from its manga base. Where did you find the postings of the manga? I’m rather interested in seeing this difference.

You were smart not to translate the beginning, because the subtitles are actually wrong. People have found the manga and put those subtitles up to explain what is really going on. Why did they do this? I don’t know.

I think the first part of this episode is a reference to Dragon Ball Z. The guy is calling himself Goku, he’s out to collect a bunch of balls, he has to fight some “(purple) aliens” who also want the balls, the balls have the power to let the wielder rule the universe, etc. It’s been a long time since I saw DBZ though… I translated the Japanese subtitles while watching, so I just need to find a way to post them up somewhere. Maybe on my animelist blog…
