Minami-ke: Okawari – 02
School starting back up for the Minami sisters, school starting back up for me!
Summary:
Kana asks for more helpings in the morning, as Haruka worries about her eating so much on the first day of the new semester. Kana insists that she will be fine, despite the scoldings even Chiaki gives her. Atsuko and Maki meet Haruka at school, finding that she is a bit later than usual because of Kana. After learning about her recent hot springs trip, Atsuko reveals that she only spent time with family. Because of Maki’s silly suggestion, the girls begin wondering about visiting abroad. In class, Haruka is conveniently made the class president because of the previous one’s sickness. After class, Haruka’s banchou legend is brought up. Haruka does not wish for this rumor to be spread, but Atsuko suggests that several people may already know.
Chiaki and her friends find that their class now has a hamster. Finding that the girls do not know how to properly care for it, Chiaki gives them orders based on her caring of Kana. Although Uchida, Makoto, and Touma are sent out by the queen’s orders, Yoshino is sneakingly able to stay in the room. During class, Chiaki is suddenly made responsible for caring for the hamster. When she tells this to her sisters that night, they learn about how much she knows about caring for it. As Kana and Chiaki get ready for bed, they hear Haruka cheerfully talking to someone outside. Sticking their heads out in curiosity, they wonder who is on the other line.
Kana is slow preparing in the morning the next day, making her sisters put her to blame as usual. At school, Yu and Hiroko approach Kana again with questions about Haruka returning to being a banchou. Keiko does not really follow through with these beliefs, but Kana brings up the previous night’s phone call in relation. Hiroko suggests a gathering to celebrate Haruka’s return, which Kana agrees to. Starting with their school, Kana calls Fujioka to the roof. Fujoka wonders what he should do as a banchou, so she refers to the notes she had taken in the past. Kana first tells Fujioka to break all of the school’s windows, but Hiroko reminds her that Haruka actually cleaned all of the windows. Seeing that this isn’t working out well, Hiroko suggests that Kana try to be the next banchou. News has gotten to Hosaka elsewhere, as he prepares for Haruka’s revival as well.
At home that night, Kana wonders if Chiaki will become a banchou as well. Chiaki does not believe Haruka will become a banchou, but her thoughts are changed when she sees Haruka’s skills in the kitchen. The next day, Kana begins gathering an army in order to support Haruka. Yu finds that she is already a member, but the rest of the students who have showed up for tryout must face Fujioka. Chiaki looks for options for her own army, but she finds that she cannot help Haruka. At Haruka’s school, her teacher approaches her with an update about the class president. Kana brings her good news to her sisters that night, but Haruka reveals that she will not be a class president because of the previous one’s healing. With this, things at school return to normal for Kana.

Impression:
Oh wow, I’ll never get tired of this show. While the entire old cast returned, the new new team has made several new changes. First of all, there are a lot of style changes, and the introductions of parodies. The use of black faces for everyone but the main cast was great, and reminded me a bit of ef. I loved the obvious play on an amazon box, and they even inserted orz text when Kana did the position! There was also all the subtle stuff like Kana randomly asking for seconds rather than answering her sister correctly, the drink cartons, and the little movements the cast makes at the best times. Some things that I wouldn’t have thought twice about in this episode if I did not read certain blogs would be the natto and Kana’s spinning her fork around.
I’m really loving the awesome stylish shots this team is bringing to the table too, like the fish eye stuff. Some of the other scenes just simply looked good. Who says comedies don’t need good production values? (Yes, I’m looking at you gonzo.) I don’t know why, but it feels like it’s been awhile since I watched this show. It was really nice to hear all the seiyu do their work, and I just noticed certain ones like Chiba Saeko playing minor roles. Maybe I was just paying more attention this time. Probably the only thing thing that will really take some getting used to is all the new hair colors for a lot of the characters. Anyways, it’s back to school for me. I’ve got class tonight, marking the start of my inconsistent schedule. I must join the Kana army!

Looks good! I am still waiting for the first episode to show up though…No one seems to be uploading this show yet…
Kana’s orz shows great potential. She should join the SZS crew
The despair is strong with this one lol
I loved the illustration with the erasers- nice little details like that really help a show make the jump from so-so to friggin’ awesome!
Love this shot. HEH, XD. http://subculture.animeblogger.net/images/minamike/okawari02_05.jpg
Opps, my bad. XD OH,wells. It’s the 5 pic. XD
Hmm, looks good but I haven’t seen the first episode either cos noone is uploading it =.=”
Wow, Fujioka looks really different compared to the first season. Meh, I preferred his looks in the first season
Tokki, Shadow- are you guys just looking for subs?? The raws are already available on various torrents.
(my mistake tokki, I meant Dando and ShadowFang)
Was the “orz!” from an edited raw or did the episode actually air on TV with that text?
Where the hell is the sub for this series?? I still haven’t watch episode 1 yet. Damn it !!!!
@M Ya, I’m looking for the subs, haha
The orz text was from the actual show.
I’m really confused as to why there are no subs for this show yet. The first season had like 5 groups covering it….is the art change really causing such drastic change in appreciation? Ah, but I guess you guys will just have to hold out until this show gets the love it deserves. =(
Maybe there is a way to learn Japanese in less than a week? LOL. It be nice if I know Japanese, I wouldn’t have to wait for any subs. It’s all good though I can wait for the subs.
I still don’t get all the hate towards this version. None of the relationships and personalitties seem to have changed.
I hope some group picks this up, but probably most are on the fence because this is basically a continuation, so those groups might feel like they are picking up a series “in the middle”.
Not sure if that made sense ^-^;;
Ayako subs made a big mistake in dropping this series. Now any sub group could pick this one up. This series only going to get bigger once people can understand the humor.
I think Ayako decided to pick up Spice and Wolf, which in all honesty seems to have a good bit of potential. Actually, I’m surprised Totali isn’t blogging it
If no one picks up Minami-ke, I’d suggest watching the raws after reading Totali’s summaries. They’re thorough enough that you should be able to keep up with what’s happening, and it really is a show worth watching
Wow, I am so out of the loop when it comes to the sub scene. Ayako really dropped this series? It does make sense that some groups think it is weird for picking it up now though….maybe we should all learn Japanese together
.
M: Haha, wow. I’m flattered. A disclaimer though: I have never thought of my summaries as a replacement for a fansub, and I do it for myself in order to keep my Japanese in check. I’m not blogging Spice and Wolf because it’s getting a mountain of coverage elsewhere, and it’s not the kind of show I would usually blog.
Hehe, that’s cool man. My listening comprehension is decent enough to keep up with shows like Minami-ke, but I do check your summaries to look for things I miss
As for Spice and Wolf, I just know that you like the slice-of-life type shows, and while Spice and Wolf may not fit that mold perfectly, it seems to have a nice easy pacing so far, and a kind of positive tone to it. Of course, I haven’t read the manga (if there is one lol, shows how little I know) and the easy-going slightly positive tone could change anytime. I’m not expecting another Shigofumi though (of course, I wasn’t REALLY expecting the first Shigofumi sooo LOL)
Geez. I’m talking too much. Sorry bout any bad blog manners I’ve got; I don’t comment on many. Keep up the good work, amigo.
I definitely think Spice and Wolf has potential, and I’ll be marathoning it later after listening to everyone rant and rave about it. Haha. Shigofumi is on another level….I am just way too impressed with that show, and I really want to talk about it despite how much coverage it is getting.
Haha, don’t even worry about “commenting manners” on this blog. I actually love talking to you guys for any reason at all….I think we’ve come up with some completely random subjects here in the past. xD
I didn’t actually find the first two episodes that funny yet, although the art seemed to have improved a bit this time. As you mentioned, the angles are pretty interesting, but often the animation is a bit jerky.
The main parts I liked were the comparisons between Kana and the Hamster and the arm wrestling part. I think I tune out whenever they bring back the banchou gag; maybe it’s just not for me. I also was captivated by the fork spinning, and horrified by the instant access to breakfast natto X(.
lol I saw that instant natto last week at the azn market….not gonna lie; I instantly though of the Kabitzin bane. I almost bought it too.
