Clannad – 14
Oh yea, Clannad….almost forgot.
Summary:
Kyou, Ryou, and Nagisa find Tomoya hard at work at Kotomi’s house in the morning. Ryou suggests that they skip school to help as well, but Tomoya brings up the trouble that would cause. Kyou calls out to Kotomi, wondering if she is properly sleeping and eating. Before leaving, Kyou promises that she and the others will enjoy Kotomi’s birthday with her the next day. The girls end up helping throughout the day, until Kyou and Ryou leave Nagisa and Tomoya at night. Tomoya reveals his intentions to stay even longer, but he denies Nagisa’s wish to stay as well. When Tomoya gets ready to start again, he sees the curtains move a bit in the window above. Looking up to the starry sky, he remembers the things the old man told him about a hidden world. Finding that he has somehow made it the next morning, Tomoya finally decides to look inside the book Kotomi gave him. Inside, he finds the lines that Kotomi had told him in the library. Tomoya is still exhausted, however, falling asleep on top of the book.
When Tomoya was a child, he had gotten lost while trying to catch insects. This is when he met Kotomi at her house. The two began seeing each other frequently, but Tomoya noticed that Kotomi did not often leave her house. She did not have other friends either. One day, Tomoya suggested that he would bring his friends over for Kotomi’s birthday. The kids were not exactly enthusiastic when he asked, however, making Tomoya lose his courage to return to Kotomi’s house. He decided that he must apologize one night, making him finally return to her house. Inside, he found Kotomi in a room full of flames. This was, of course, the aftermath of Kotomi’s burning her father’s envelope. The old man and one of his associates appeared soon after, quickly putting the fire out. The old man told Kotomi not to worry, as this was for her sake. Tomoya was unable to return to Kotomi after that, and their meeting slowly became something of a dream to him.
Kotomi wakes Tomoya, revealing that she had always remembered him. She loved Tomoya, as he was the only friend she had. Both of them in tears, Tomoya tells Kotomi that everyone is waiting for her. Later, Tomoya and the girls greet Kotomi as she reaches the school. They present her with a violin voucher, explaining what had happened with the actual violin they wished to present to her. Kotomi’s teacher then appears, telling her that someone has come to meet her. Tomoya assures Kotomi that the old man is not the bad person she thinks he is, so she sees him with the others that afternoon. The man reveals that he has finally found her father’s suitcase, telling Kotomi to open it. Inside is one stuffed bear, and a letter with her father’s wish for this to be taken to Kotomi.
Kotomi wonders about her father’s research papers, but the man tells her that it wasn’t possible for her father to have multiple copies. The envelope that Kotomi burned only contained a stuffed animal catalog. The man further reveals his memories of Kotomi’s father talking about her all of the time. He believes that her parents probably threw away all of the important contents of the suitcase to put the stuffed bear inside, as they only wished for her happiness. In tears, Kotomi tells her parents about her current happiness. Tomoya then thinks about his belief that the suitcase has traveled all over the world until it finally reached Kotomi. Inside the letter, Kotomi’s father told her of the wonderful world and suggested that she make friends and enjoy herself. Her mother had wrote about their search for the stuffed bear, and of their inability to send it to her directly. At the end, the two wished Kotomi a happy birthday. Tomoya and the girls visit Kotomi later with the violin they promised her, so Kotomi presents her voucher. Kotomi has prepared for the celebration, and more friends will be arriving soon. Tomoya worries about how many people will be coming, but Kotomi assures him that it is ok because she has a large yard.
Preview: Nagisa cries again! It’s basketball time.
Impression:
I cried…and I cried again while writing the summary. I also had to hide my tears from my room mate walking around behind me….stupid Clannad. I was totally ready to make fun of this episode, but I scrapped that as soon as I finished this episode. I didn’t enjoy the last part of Kotomi’s arc, but this made up for everything. When they finally revealed Kotomi’s past, I saw her parents in a completely different light. The old man was shown to be someone who was trying to help Kotomi too, so he’s not the child molester I’ve been referring to him as for the past few weeks at Ex-fan. I’m really impressed with the amount of detail Kyoani has put into this episode, from the watch in the beginning to the 3D plane (done right!) at the end. The last few scenes were really touching, but the engrish and other languages kind of killed it. I don’t know what else to say. This episode was great, and I’m looking forward to what’s coming next week.

Totali: How come your blog is slower than the sub this time?? How dare you forget the awesomeness of Clannad?? Just kidding =)
Well, you’re not only one who cried. I did too. Good thing that my roomate already slept at that time. I don’t know, the overall I’ll say Fuko’s arc is little bit better. However, the emotional at the end of both arcs were about the same to me. Now, my remaining question is “which heroine will get the next arc?” Based on the preview, I can’t really tell. They have only 10 episodes left. Hopefully, they still have enough time to put wrap thing wrap and still have emotional/tear jerking episode like this one.
Crying Nagisa! \o/
There’s way too much baaawing in Clannad, but this was a great episode. The message delivered by Kotomi’s parents was a little weak, but the determination they showed to get said message to their daughter was amazing.
Sissies. I wonder how much man-points I racked up for not crying during this episode :p
Like ItAintEasy, I didn’t cry. But then, I cried while watching happy series like Aria. My tears are reverse tears!
And perhaps they might be making it 26 and not 24 episodes. I’m not too sure myself. Even so, they have to wrap up the mini-arcs of side characters like Sunohara. How they will pull this off, I wonder.
Nice plane……
hahaha!
ok im sorry but i did not cry
why?
i was dubbing my voice with okazaki’s and the old man and i killed it.
it was really touching i give it that.
the suitcase traveling around the world was awsome and i had chils behind my back all the time.
all those years the suit case travelled around the world, man thats really something.
dammit ima have to watch this episode again this time not talking or pretend to dub my freaking voice!!!
now that you cried totali i can see that an old habit of mine just killed me abut to cry.
haha!! i saw a nice boat in the background when the dog found the suitcase!!! XDD 10 points!
well i got a look over it again and nothing, no tears just chills coming from my head
god ima stop this habit of mine pretending to dub the guys voices. it kills the moment.
have you guys ever done that stuff?
Yeah, I’ve tried “adapting” the anime dialogue into conversational English, at least in my head, while watching some series. I don’t care if it makes me look weird, it just goes to show you how much of a fan of a series I really am.
no i mean like saying it out loud.
saying it in my head is fine.
i just get the habit of saying the dialouge out loud
[...] while the rest of the blogosphere goes on and on about how Key stories are typical tear-jerkers and Kotomi’s story [...]
kenshin514: I blame school! Haha, dude my rommie was like taking pictures in our room or something dorky like that….ugh. He probably would have laughed seeing my bawwing at some teddy bear.
aurabolt: Yea…..you like that don’t you! t.t pewpew
Shirukii: It was a bit unbelievable….but it was also unbelievable! HAHA.
ItAintEazy: The only reward you get is the realization that you HAVE NO SOUL!!!
Sylon Beta: lol I tear up in Aria too….maybe I should use the term “tear up” anyways, cause “crying” is a bit of an exaggeration.
stevelikesanime: Rather than dubbing the lines, I make up dumb scenarios and make fun of things that I shouldn’t. That’s what kills it for me, haha.
I really loved this episode as well! Though, I didn’t end up crying like I would expect myself too? I mean at the end of Fuko’s arc I was bawling my eyes out (disturbing image), but Kotomi’s character just doesn’t make me feel the same way, no matter how sad it was.
@lostty
ya man i feel the same way. Fukos arc was fun and at that one tear jerking part i was like crying with a couple (and i really mean a couple) of tears fall out.
On Komoti’s sad part, i wasn’t crying, i felt nostalgic sorta. Chills behind my back. that feeling only and it was sad, i give it that.
anime isnt about restraint, replacing your own voice or dubbing it into english in your head is just a pathetic was of saying “im not gonna cry, I WONT cry, cause im making it sound stupid in my head. yeah… YEAH… now since itsounds silly i wont cry (covering ones ears) heh… Man points to me, i didnt cry since i was blocking out the full force of the show in my head) pathetic, if you shed a tear or two FINE it just means you wern’t cowardly enough to embrace this show for what it is. people who DO glance away and attempt to numb themselves to the force of the story (by LOL… playing the words in english in their head) are the equivelant to the little kiddies who suddenly find the pattern on the couch or carpet in the room theyr’e sitting in when watching a scary movie…
…Because that’s all you are… Scared.
…Only now you’re a little older (chronologically speaking) you dont fear the monsters, no…
…You fear the full force of your emotions and feelings… So you dwarf them, hide from them and dull them down like some of you have said (playing the voices in english in your own head in your own voice).
Those who do that… Who are really scared of watching a little anime in it’s full force… well…
…They’re really gay if you ask me.
