Zoku Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei – 03

OP: “kūsō Rumba (空想ルンバ)” by Kenji Ohtsuki and Zetsubō Shōjo-tachi – Three episodes in…hey, that sounds about right! The new animation is presented like an old film, with anatomy parts, dancing, and other odd situations for Nozomu and the students.

Summary:

Harumi searches for reference material in her room while listening to the radio. She begins exchanging mails with one of her friends as well, as she continues to try to relax in the heat of her room. As the radio show she is listening to comes to an end, Harumi finally finds the inspiration she needs to work on her doujinshi.

When Nozomu wakes up in the morning, he sees Majiru researching things on the internet. At school, Nozomu begins describing the obligations the students and everyone else has. The students believe that there are those who put obligations on themselves even though there is no need, however, bringing Nozomu outside to prove it. This is certainly true, but Nozumu then brings up times when obligations are put on others when they would not have them otherwise. Meeting Kei and Jinroku-sensei outside, Nozomu is reminded of the obligations they forced on him in the recent past. The students believe that Nozomu is not going through with some of his own obligations, however, bringing him to his house. Inside, Kiri has been preparing food for Majiru and Nozomu, as well as cleaning their clothes. Seeing that Kiri is fine with doing these things, Nozomu lets her continue to take care of him. Because of this, he becomes a NEET.

In class later, Nozomu gives students news for the new semester. They are second years now. This makes Chiri wish that Nozomu would not reveal some things, but he brings up the many times that this happens. Many of the students remember times when things were revealed to them, causing a negative atmosphere in the classroom. One more important thing is brought up afterwards. Itoshiki Rin has transferred in as a student. More things are shockingly revealed afterwards, such as the name of the school. Nozomu and the students then begin revealing things that are suppose to be shocking, but are actually quite worthless. Chiri tries last, but she actually ends up revealing something quite shocking. With this, Nozomu stops her from saying anything else.

Impression:

Oh, what to say about this episode….the first half was definitely unique, and it looks like Shaft is wanting to try out a lot of different things with the first halves of episodes this season. Nothing really happened besides Harumi’s wandering around her room, but the scenes were full of parodies and a bit of random fanservice. The radio program she was listening to was quite funny, but there’s really not much you can say about it. I certainly couldn’t summarize it, a bit like last week’s surprise. It was kind of like listening to a drama CD in the background, much like Harumi was actually doing. I was definitely reminded of Hidamari Sketch with the way they handled all of this. It was quite fun to watch, but it just wasn’t the laugh out loud hilarious stuff we usually expect from this show. I don’t even want to try to name all the parodies they showed, but the Code Geass, Gundam 00, and PPD ones were really funny. I’m not sure how many caught the subtle Gurren Lagann one later on, and I’m pretty sure I saw a Cloud figurine at one point. The yaoi was pretty hilarious at the end too.

The second half of the episode returned to the usual flare, though it still didn’t jump out that much without the bgm track. The theme of obligations was so well played, and just as expected from this series. I love how they poke at things most people would never think about otherwise. Everyone has had these kinds of experiences right? I know I’ve felt like I’ve had to do something that I usually wouldn’t before. Kiri’s caring for NEET Nozomu was probably one of the highlights of the episode for me, since it reminded me of NHK ni Youkoso! That was an entire series about NEET life that I loved, so of course I could enjoy a short segment. Kiri is probably my favorite Zetsubou girl as well. Speaking of Zetsubou girls, a few more showed up in this episode. They’ll probably get proper introductions later, but the one that stood out the most was probably Rin. HELLO! I loved her as Nozomu’s sibling, but now she’s a student!? Hilarity ensues.

This isn’t my favorite series ever. But damn it’s close! :D

The content is good, of course, but the presentation is what keeps me loving it. I guess it’s also due to the fact that I don’t really ever have any sort of expectation for it to meet. It’s amazing how your own mindset can temper your reaction to something… (I think I’m the only person in the world that hated the conclusion of the Kotomi arc in Clannad for example :O )

But this show always leaves me orz lol

Pay more attention to the radio! It’s the “real” A-Part! Even Okusa Manami is being introduced in this part!

I heard they’re going to do something like this for every episode; I remember reading Shinbo’s interview, he says something like “if we’re going to do it in original’s way, we have to add something to make viewer feel uneasy. Such as changing the classroom to OOOOO or dub the voices in OOOOOOOO.” So I expected more of this twisted A-Part.

For the new OP animation… um, next from Ero is Guro? Eh? Nice, SHAFT… I think several scene in the OP is a parody to something, like dancing maybe parody to KyoAni’s? I’m sure a scene after that is a parody to either 00 or Code Geass and freefalling scene is parody to Eureka 7. A Kafuka scene after that maybe Evangelion’s Rei’s scene?

But anyway, Inoue Kiko 17 years and 9619 days old! Oi oi! FTW!

I just… shall we say, by certain means, acquired the first season on a physical format. It’s not my favorite, but it’s up there, as well. The first season was a lot better the second time viewing it.

Oh, and it’s a shame you aren’t blogging They are my noble masters… it’s getting really crazy.

Hm… I’m started to like the randomness that Shaft is putting in for the beginning of the episodes. Yay! for the new op animation! a little faster than I expected… and Yay for more zetsubou girls! and I think a guy too… Also, YAY! for more Rin-chan! Now who doesn’t like Rin-chan? … かっ!

    PRECURE. HELL YES.

M: orz -shita! I’m probably biased as a resident Shaft fanboy and one who covered this show religiously in its first season. This show can be enjoyed in a lot of different ways though, and I’m glad that there are actually a decent number of people watching it out there.

Nai: WOW. You get me every time. This is why I’m your guys’ peer and not teacher. I thought I prided myself in noticing subtle things like that, but I guess I was really SHAFTed this time. I should start watching episodes multiple times like I used to….if I only had the time x3. I guess I was right about the experimentation in the A parts, though…….and YES! I knew I saw parts of that OP from somewhere! E7, one of my favorite shows!!! Haha, Matoi and Nozomu…I dunno if they really live up to Renton and Eureka xD.

Rentington: What I liked about the first season was its simple introduction of characters and how they displayed them. It’s a bit early to say if this season is better or worse though. About Noble Masters….yea, I just don’t have time to cover it…or even watch it. I’ll be checking it out later for sure though =(.

kitsune: I love Ren-chan!!! Are you in despair????

    Shippoyasha: LOL

Oh, I get it. Kiri=giri. HA! Hopefully they don’t spend too much time soley on this pun, but after seeing previous episodes, I’m not holding my breath.

totali: LOL! I’m always in despair! Yay!

Well, I thought the first half of the first season was actually the weaker half. It was necessary to understand all the characters. but, I really liked the last two episodes especially. They really haven’t missed a step since then.

First few minutes of Harumi in a bra = FTW. XD

Animes like Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei is perhaps the reason why I’m still alive. Otherwise, I would’ve extended my heights far earlier than I should.

    @Hangmen: Nice one, lol.

This episode was great, and for some reason, I didn’t like the previous episode. The Setsuna figure and some other random references was nice, and the way they poke fun at some of the mundane things that happen almost daily, but no one ever went to think about it, is almost professional. One thing that irks me a little is the random pantsu shots coming from Kaere. One or two is okay, but isn’t there a little too much of it in this particular episode?

  13. Totali February 2nd, 2008 11:17 am

lol I’m pretty sure they did that on purpose. Shaft really plays on things like that. It makes me remember things like the “fanservice” episode from season one. They like to take things that other anime do and make you realize what you’re really watching.
