Clannad – 16
Who turned my emo romance anime into a basketball anime?
Summary:
When Tomoya and Nagisa introduce Mei to her brother’s room, she quickly decides to clean it up. The two express their amazement of Mei’s work as she goes to do the laundry, but Nagisa takes the chance to suggest that she and Tomoya keep Youhei’s secret from her. Mei actually hears about Youhei’s “love for Tomoya” quite clearly, further increasing the misunderstanding. Tomoya and Nagisa suggest that they would like to have a little sister like Mei, when Youhei arrives home to become shocked upon seeing Tomoya and Nagisa seemingly alone in his room. Tomoya says there is a cute girl inside for him to meet, but Youhei’s excitement is soon lost when he finds that only his sister there. Many misunderstandings are cleared up afterwards, and Mei even presents her strange gift to Youhei. Nagisa offers to let Mei stay at her house since she is unable to stay with Youhei, and Tomoya is surprised to find that Youhei has some admirable brotherly aspects. When Mei is brought to Nagisa’s house, she quickly finds how well the family gets along. Mei expresses her interest after learning about her brother’s basketball meet, leaving Tomoya no choice but to attend.
Tomoya meets Tomoyo on the way to school the next day. Preventing Tomoya from being late, Tomoyo rushes to school while holding on to his hand. Behind them, Kyou worries about another woman appearing before Tomoya. Tomoya reveals to Youhei in class that he will be helping out, so they go to gather supporters. Kyou readily agrees, but not before giving Tomoya a condition: to meet her in the afternoon. Tomoyo visits Tomoya during lunch break, causing an angry Kyou to storm in. Tomoyo confirms that Tomoya is not dating any girls at the moment, embarrassing Kyou before she takes Tomoya away. While Tomoya eats with the Fujibayashi sisters, Kyou brings up the conversation they were having earlier. Tomoya wonders what this is about, but he realizes when he glances at a now embarrassed Ryou. Tomoya attempts to shoot a basket later, but he fails in disappointment. Youhei hides his wish to see his sister that night while talking with Tomoya, but when Mei does show up, she only wishes to see Tomoya.
When the group gathers in the gym the next day, a number of other people have come to watch. The freshmen are put up against Youhei and the others first. With impressive talent and teamwork, Tomoya and the others are able to take the lead. Rei and her friends are amazed by what they see, and Tomoya learns about the fans Kyou has during play. The regulars are eventually switched in, quickly turning the tides of the match. With only a few minutes remaining, Tomoya is given one chance to regain the win. He is knocked down before he can preform a lay up, and he gives up on himself on the way down. Upon Nagisa’s shout, however, he throws the ball and successfully makes the winning shot. The groups around cheer, but everyone is forced to run when the coach appears. Before Tomoya can leave, his upperclassman compliments his old skills. Mei bids her farewells to her brother and the others afterwards, promising to return later.
Preview: Tomoya spends some alone time being emo about his future.
Impression:
Come on, speak up. Who was it? Ok, this episode was really great. Like I said last time, I’m really enjoying it when Clannad makes me laugh. I was already laughing out loud within the first few minutes of the episode, and I took an instant liking to Mei (gah~ shoku!). I did think some of the first part of the episode seemed a little forced though, and the direction really didn’t flow extremely well for me. My SUPA HAREM predictions were pretty much on the dot, or at least I like to think so. With both of the Fujibayashi sisters in full blush mode, added with some more Tomoyo action, I was almost tricked into joining the dark side along with all of you other nuts. Speaking of preferences, isn’t Kotomi totally out of place!? Forget you, Fuuko haters! Forget you!
The second half of the episode was pretty cool, but not in a really awesome way or anything. I laughed at all the streaking and blurs, as well as the explanation of basketball rules among other things. I guess basketball isn’t quite as popular in Japan as it is here in the states. I think it’s enjoyable, but I’m not the most dedicated person around. My brother is in his High School team and he’s a big fan of the Lakers, haha. Around the blogsphere, I guess Derailed by Darry would provide the most obvious signs of fandom. The ending of the game in this episode was pretty cliched and expected, but it came off pretty well as usual. I couldn’t help but be reminded of the similar scenes in the Lovely Complex movie though. The bgm tracks were pretty nice too. Next week looks pretty dramatic, but I wonder about just how deep it will be.

Totali: Dude, finally !! You haven’t blog anime for like 3 days. You better get your lazy ass up and do some more blogging, dude. LOL just kidding.
Sigh, not much Tomoyo’s screentime again. Oh well, at least, my Kyou gets quite a lot of action in this episode. Kyou FTW !! Mei seems to be really cool character too. I’ll be back when I sub come out.
The sub of Clannad comes out really fast. Make me really happy =) Thanks for all the people whoe do the sub. You guys make my day.
Haha, I thought it was really funny when Mei brought out Dougu and ask if Sonohara want it. Mei’s appearance is really light-up in the beginning of this episode. To bad that she has to leave already. When she said “what a shock,” it reminded me of Ayu (Kanon). Tomoyo’s love is in the air really make the story even more interesting. I wish she could have more screentime though. But the best of all was Kyou’s blushing. That was so damn cute !!! Kyou FTW all the way.
I didn’t expect much out of the basketball match. I thought it would be better if Tomoya actually made the basket without the shout from Nagisa. I thought that was too cliche. Oh well, any good episode from Kyoani. Some people said that Nagisa may be sick soon and the rest series will be the after story stuff. What do you think, Totali??
The browser froze after I hit the submit button, so it seems like my comment is gone. Ah well.
Anyway, I thought that the basketball part was pretty interesting, if ending on a cliched note.
And my guess is that Mei would be reappearing, or perhaps indirectly helping her brother; they DO need to complete Sunohara’s path in order to end the story.
Noooo!Spoilers! NOOOOOOO! damn, i just hope that nagisa’s illess is nothing serious…. D@MMIT, Fuuuuuuuuuuuuu*koooooo
@Anime n00b: My big big apology. I never thought that was a spoiler (I was assuming that most people already knew it). I don’t like to know spoiler either, so I feel your pain.
U r forgiven
Yay! Tomoyo had good time in this episode.
Yukari had a good voice for Mei.
It was nice episode. I thought the music for the basketball scene was cool. I’m soooooo happy that the story wasn’t set for the basketball scene having them lose and have “you tried your best blah blah blah”.
Anyone who heard anything out of Mei than loli Nanoha has not watched enough MSLN.
Great episode overall, just really weird that KyoAni decided to so blatantly use speed lines during the basketball game.
haha dude your preview episode comment was exactly what i was thinking! Tomyoa being emoish with his life. lol
this episode got me laughing a few. The bgm during the basketball scene was nice. must have for my ipod XD and above all. Tomoya finally proves that he likes Nagisa although he didn’t actually said it. he hinted it though. No wonder Mei’s voice was hella familiar. She was Rika from higurashi (Yes i spend time looking up for my seiyuus) lol well i love this episode. the preview looks like he gonna cut himself or something maybe until Nagisa saves the entire episode. thats what im predicting.
This episode deserves three outta four nippaas, I doubt I’d remember this episode anytime soon, but it represents a lot of what makes this series good. It might have gotten four, except they made Mei into too much of a cameo character. And I think that basket in the end was not cliched at all. It’s not as if the drama club could convince some other random faculty member with free time to be their figurehead advisor or something.
kenshin514: DUDE school takes a lot of time lol!!!! I haven’t played the game, but a lot of people have been discussing the crazy things they’re altering from the game content. I really don’t know what to expect, but I’m pretty confident that Kyoani will do a good job of pulling us through it all.
Sylon Beta: Subculture Anime Blog…..crashing your browsers since 2008? =(
Anime n00b: Eh, I wouldn’t call that a huge spoiler…more like speculation. I do have spoiler tags actually, I just haven’t gotten around to implementing them into the comments x(
Avisch: LOL I was so expecting that kind of ending…I was about to facepalm hearing Tomoya’s inner dialog. Nagisa save FTW!
Shirukii: Wait, that wasn’t Nanoha? Mei?? Who?
stevelikesanime: rofl!!!! Man, Tomoya is totally the cut himself type. tsk. And haha, Nagisa has been the main girl since the beginning…of course they’re gonna hook up!
ItAintEazy: Yea, game players have confirmed that the basketball scene wasn’t filler too. Oh, and what’s up with your whack scale! Wouldn’t people usually rate it out of five…come on…come on.
You know what? I was about to give the episode four out of five, I guess I should have went with my first instinct since it was a turning point episode. I guess I was just too upset at the inexcusably little screentime given to Mei, bah!
Kyoani messed up me basketball scene, as well as the flags of all the girls left.
Seriously get the game. The sub is almost done. Clannad game is 99% (Tomoyo After PS2 is 100%) and this anime…90%… I could have cut more points.
It was a pretty good episode. I loved Mei’s presence, made us see a bit more of Youhei’s good side. Hopefully, she’d come back again in some future episode. I was anticipating a new girl arc after Kotomi’s. Maybe next episode, but it seems to be Tomoya-centric. Either way, I’m sure to watch this til it ends. =)
