Minami-ke: Okawari – 07

Mako-chan goes down the path of self destruction…

Summary:

At the kotatsu with her sisters, Haruka says that she will be making chocolates for her friends. Looking at the book Haruka has, Chiaki requests to let her learn as well. Kana is not very interested at first, but she wishes to participate as well after hearing that Valentine’s Day is a girl’s festival. Mako-chan is invited to the house by Kana, and finds that he will not be able to stay friends with everyone unless he stays in his ridiculous maid outfit. Touma has also been invited by Kana. When Kana finds that Touma does not plan on giving chocolates to anyone, she suggests that she has her brothers. Touma wonders if she is a cold person for not considering them, as Kana goes to answer the door to more people.

Kana asks Chiaki and Uchida who they plan on giving their chocolates to, but finds that they have boring plans. The girls wonder who Mako-chan will be giving her chocolates to outside, finding that she had Haruka in mind. Chiaki denies this, however, and Haruka suggest that she give them to a boy. With this, Mako-chan is forced to say that she plans on giving them to Makoto. While Kana eats chocolates with her, Touma wonders if she is really such a cold person. Chiaki and Uchida begin stirring chocolate in the kitchen, and Uchida finds that she cannot do it as well as Chiaki. Kana causes trouble for her younger sister again by eating the chocolate she was working on, while Mako-chan meanwhile struggles with the girls’ statement that he would make a good bride in the future.

Touma is forced to buy more chocolate by Kana, and she meets Fujioka on the way. Fujioka requests to help after learning what Touma is doing, but he becomes lost in thought when Touma implies that Fujioka might be the one getting chocolates from Kana. Touma finally returns to the apartments later, while Haruka and the other girls continue to prepare chocolate. Mako-chan has left later, while the girls bring up their earlier discussion. When Haruka wonders who Chiaki plans on giving her chocolate to, Kana enters to guess that it is Fuyuki. When Kana tries to sneak more chocolate later, Chiaki appears to reveal the trick she has played on her sister. The girls put their finishing touches on the chocolate they have made later, still discussing possible recipients for their chocolate.

When Fujioka arrives at school the next day, he finds that he has received many chocolates from the girls in the class. He desperately tries to hide these from Kana, however, who was expecting to take some chocolate from him. Ritsuko and many girls plan to give their chocolates to Fujioka, but find that Kana is in their way. At the elementary school, Uchida loses the chocolate she has made to the class hamster. Touma finds herself surrounded by girls wanting to give her chocolate, rather than to the boys who are not as cool as her. Haruka gives out chocolates to her friends at her school, while Maki finds Hosaka in his usual disillusioned state. Kana asks Keiko who the boy who has received the most chocolates is, and takes off after hearing her guess. Fujioka also takes this chance to return the chocolates he has received. When Ritsuko hears Keiko’s suggestion that Fujioka hates chocolates, she is put to tears.

A few girls hand their chocolates to Fuyuki after seeing how nice he is, so Chiaiki’s friends wonder if it is okay that she doesn’t. Chiaki informs them of their misunderstanding, however, putting them in surprise. Fujioka has finally returned all of his chocolates by the end of the day, but finds that Kana still has not given him any. Kana returns to the classroom with a mountain of chocolate soon, noticing the unfortunate Fujioka who has none. Kana gives him one of hers, making him extremely happy. Haruka gives chocolates to her sisters when they all reach home, and Haruka becomes surprised when Chiaki gives her the one she made. Chiaki believes that it would be a waste to eat the wonderful chocolate Haruka has made her, so Kana eats it for her. Of course, this makes Chiaki very mad as she proceeds to assault her sister.

Preview: Pool episode!

Impression:

Was Uchida laughing or crying? Maybe it was a bit of both. But wow, this was probably the funniest episode of the second season so far. This might have to do with what I guessed last week, in that this episode was a lot more like many of the first season’s episodes. I already suspected what I would be in for as soon as I saw Mako-chan in that maid outfit (how did Haruka not find that weird!?) The Valentine’s Day theme was a nice one to play on, even though it was a bit late. Who says there’s no romance in this show? Too bad only Fujioka got any slight sign of notice. I’m glad they didn’t kill the end of that to make a cheap joke though. I laughed at Touma getting all of the chocolates in her grade too. I still don’t know what’s weirder – hearing her or Mako-chan say “ore” (boku is hot…ore is just weird). I thought the representations of the different grades were pretty realistic too. Everyone knows that Valentine’s Day starts losing its impact after Junior High.

Watching Kana running around eating all of the chocolate in the house was pretty fun too. She must have a high metabolism….I don’t understand how people can eat that much chocolate though. They also used the opaque eyes on black face thing in this episode. I hadn’t noticed it before, but some people were considering it really creepy. I’m not even gonna lie…that was pretty weird. I usually leave this up for others to do, but I have to make fun of some things in this episode as well: Chiaki goes Higurashi on her sister! I would facepalm like Uchida after seeing Makoto too! …Next week is a pool episode, which should be a lot of fun.

Gotta love how screwed up is Kana and Fujioka’s “relationship”; he already confessed, saw her naked, and she already gave him Valentine chocolate… yet it was all in the most warped way possible. lol.

As for whether Uchida was laughing or crying during Mako-chan’s confession of who she’d be giving her chocolates to, I think that there were tears of laughter involved. She knows Mako-chan’s secret, as does Yoshino, which is why Yoshino just got a ‘uh?’ look when Mako-chan said she’d be giving the chocolates to Makoto… all the while Chiaki suggested there were better people to give chocolate to, other than that idiot. Uchida, of course, was trying not to choke to death after first seeing Kana manipulate him into wearing a maid outfit, then overhearing how his excellent culinary skills (think a proto-Hosaka) would make him a good wife to someone… and THEN we got that.

I don’t think that was a facepalm so much as an attempt to avoid totally destroying Mako-chan’s self-image due to the expression of utter disbelief she was probably wearing, combined with a maniacal grin. But I do look forward to seeing Touma and Yoshino together in the pool next week, since that means Haruka-neesama will be back to her bathing suit…

    Haruka in a bathing suit…

    o_O

By the way, Hosaka’s delusional – Chiaki after finding out Santa was her uncle was disillusioned – one’s crazy, the other’s cynical.

it’s rather interesting to see how chiaki hones her smarts dealing with a baka onee-chan in the household. makes you wonder how it’d be like if miu had a sibling…orz. XP
