Minami-ke: Okawari – 09

Change can happen in so many ways…

Summary:

When Haruka presents dinner to the girls at night, Chiaki finds it strange that Kana is not as acting as excited as she usually does. After the girls finish eating, Kana tells her younger sister that she has become afraid of her own powers. When she finally gets Chiaki to listen, she states that she has been able to see the dishes they have been eating in her dreams. Chiaki eventually agrees to believe Kana if she can predict the next night’s dinner, as the girls head to bed. In her dreams that night, Kana sees a strange world. She is bathing in a red soup like dish, Chiaki enjoys a meal with her bear, and Mako-chan is a real girl. Kana wakes to wonder about this dream, in particular about Mako-chan and his actions, before deciding to go back to bed. In the morning, Chiaki finds that Kana will not give her a direct description of her prediction.

At school, Haruka is taken to talk with her teacher. He suggests a chance for Haruka to travel, but Haruka is troubled because of her own situations. Because Kana is having difficulties decoding her dreams, she harasses Keiko about ways to solve this. When Chiaki leaves her classroom for awhile, Uchida suggests that Chiaki has changed quite a bit. She tells Makoto that he has changed a lot too, however, referring to something obvious. When a boy named Shuuichi overhears the group’s conversation about visiting the Minami home, he wonders if he can tag along. When Kana finds that Makoto has shown up at her home, she has methods taken to have him leave. However, he is soon forced to return as Mako-chan.

Mako-chan visits Kana’s room, wondering if his disguise is good enough to deceive people like Yoshino. Kana assures him that she does not know his identity, then implying that he is free to do whatever he wants. When Mako-chan leaves the room, he runs into Yoshino right away. Yoshino begins asking Mako-chan many questions, greatly troubling him. When Touma arrives at the apartment, Mako-chan attempts to get her help. She has her own objectives, however, pushing Mako-chan off of her. When Mako-chan accidentally touches Yoshino’s chest in the process, he panics and leaves in belief that she has found out his identity. While Mako-chan is troubled about this outside, Kana appears to tell him that things that were once hated may become liked. Inside, Shuuichi suddenly expresses that he would like to change like Chiaki. However, Chiaki does not believe that she can help him.

Haruka has been troubled about her decision all day, but she finally decides on her need to buy groceries. Chiaki meanwhile explains to Shuuichi that change is up to himself, wondering if she has actually changed herself. Kana meet Chiaki after everyone has left, attempting to make her dream true by giving Chiaki the same food she was eating then. Later in the bath, Chiaki wonders to Haruka if she has changed. Haruka suggests that she probably has without realizing, before going to finish preparing dinner. The girls have crab that night, and Kana decides not to reveal the mistake she made in her dreams. In the morning, Chiaki’s appearance has changed slightly. This makes Kana freak, but Haruka refuses to say anything about it. Chiaki’s friends are troubled by Chiaki’s change as well, and Makoto is still afraid of Yoshino.

Hosaka has returned to school, so he attempts to take the lunch made by Haruka from Hayami when she passes by. Hayami believes that Hosaka has become unsure of himself, since he cannot decide whether he wants to cook for Haruka or eat her meals. After several conflicts and an intervention from Maki, Hosaka comes up with his own answer.

Preview: More Fujioka…more Mako-chan?

Impression:

Holy crap. I laughed….and laughed…and laughed again. I guess Okawari is taking a cue from the last season by putting the most funny episodes at the end. This episode was also pretty stand alone, though there was the nice theme of change that managed to fit itself in. It was nice to have a theme with Chiaki at the center of it, and I’m wondering if Haruka’s struggle with continue in the next episode. The dream that Kana had was awesome, and I really love when these types of scenes are done in such a bizarre way. I was definitely dying watching Mako-chan freak out about Yoshino. I’m not sure if the serious faces Yoshino was making were hallucinations from Mako-chan or not, but it was really Death Note either way. Yoshino was also amazingly ridiculous as always. I really don’t know what to say about that girl. Hosaka’s last scene was randomly hilarious and awesome, especially with the first season like eyecatch. Lastly, Chiaki’s double ahoge and face stepping combo was pure win! Next week looks to be more of the same, though I’ve got another concern for that date…

Top center screen. I contemplated shooting myself.

Bottom right preview screen. I considered the thought again.

Welcome to the brainbreak episode… which brought back the old Minami-ke eyecatch. And Hosaka slow-stripping. And muscular Kana.

We’re back to the old Minami-ke style humor… which, between that and next week’s preview (Mako-chan looking a little… psycho), brings back memories of good times. Mmm…. Episode 13…

Hmm, I was bored until Hosaka started unbuttoning his shirt while the teachers told him to tie his necktie properly. The dream about stacked Mako-chan scared me.

How is Haruka suddenly able to afford all this expensive food?

Kabitzin: Secret side-business involving Maki-chan, Hayami-senpai, and photos mailed to various magazines. ;)

I thought she had connections with Granny or w/e.

Totali: It’s probably from family, but it’s more fun to say she’s getting money via illegitimate means. You KNOW Hayami-senpai would sell lingerie shots, like a certain long-clawed woman of less-than-perfect morals from Artai in another series.

Thank you, Juliette Nao Zhang, for creating much fanservice.
