Minami-ke: Okawari - 12

Sports festival super lolis.

Summary:

Chiaki visits the school nurse, Kumada-sensei, because she believes a slight fever. Kumada is more interested in talking with Chiaki about a teacher named Tanaka, so she has it arranged that Chiaki stays with her for a bit. As Makoto arrives at the office, Kumada has preparations made for him to leave quickly. When Chiaki returns home that night, she tells her sisters about the preparations for the sports festival which have been preventing her from returning home early. The preparations continue at school, and while walking home with her later, Touma wonders why Chiaki won’t walk with Fuyuki who is following behind. Of course, Chiaki gives her usual annoyed response before seeing Touma off. At the apartments, Kana has Uchida and Yoshino practice running for the festival. As Chiaki heads to her level of the apartments, Fuyuki expresses his hope that they will have a fun festival. It begins raining on the days following, but Chiaki is not worried about this very much.

At school the next day, Chiaki works with Touma and Fuyuki to have duties finished quickly. As both Touma and Chiaki have the same last name, Fuyuki is allowed to call them by their firsts. As the days continue on, Kana and Haruka also express their interests in the upcoming events. Chiaki continues to be annoyed by Fuyuki’s hesitation at the apartments, but finds that he leaves this time before she can say anything to him. The Minami sisters have a big dinner that night in preparation for Chiaki’s school festival. When Kana mentions their duty to attend, Chiaki becomes stuck on the word “family”. Chiaki hangs up a teru teru bozu that night, unknowingly matching Fuyuki’s next door.

When the festival starts, a few of the Minami’s acquaintances show up as well. Haruka and Kana cheer on Chiaki during her run, but the rest of the group does not do extremely well. Kana and Fujioka become involved in the next race, though Kana laughs at Chiaki’s reasoning for her choice afterwards. Fuyuki goes to eat lunch by himself during a break, but Chiaki drags him over to eat with the rest of the group. During the next race, Chiaki asks for Haruka to attend with her. Fuyuki puts on a disappointing face about this, but Kana wonders if she should race again. Chiaki is brought to happiness when she attends the three legged race with Haruka, but Fuyuki only glances in disappointment before returning home with his father. Touma complains during clean up at the end of the day, but she surprises Chiaki by telling her that Fuyuki has transferred. Finding the entrance to her home a bit emptier that night, Chiaki again states her disappointment that Fuyuki would not express his feelings properly. Maki finds out about Haruka’s overseas trip at school later, so she reveals this to Atsuko and Kana at an ice cream parlor. Not having heard of this previously, Kana drops her spoon in shock.

Preview: No explosion of drama in the last episode?

Impression:

I’m having a hard time deciding whether that cream on Kana’s face killed or made the moment for me. Anyways, what the-? I didn’t see Fuyuki’s transfer coming at all. What was all the previous development for? This episode did a nice job of representing the differences in family situations Chiaki and he had, but it just seemed like a waste in the end. Like, Fuyuki only walked away with a bit of envy over what Chiaki had. But eh, oh well. There weren’t that many Fuyuki fans around anyways. I laughed a lot at Fujioka’s freaking out about Kana getting close to Fuyuki, and it always amazes me how Hosaka manages to show up in any situation. Kumada-sensei’s actions in the beginning were definitely eye opening too. I wouldn’t have minded having a nurse like that in elementary school at all. There were a lot of other funny parts dealing with the sports festival itself, like the completely random item Touma was holding (Where did you get that!?), and I swear I saw an SOS-dan parody hidden in there. Next week is the last episode. For some reason, I’m not expecting as strong of an ending as the first season’s.

Mmmm.. Kumada-sensei, and Mako-chan showing up at school as ‘herself’. Between that and Fuyuki going bye-bye (alas, not over a cliff but still, he’s leaving), this is much better then the last two or so episodes.
