OP: “forever we can make it!” by THYME – So, I heard you like boobs. I actually think the song is pretty catchy, and the style is pretty interestingly done.

Summary:

A group of spaceship operators chases after a single girl somewhere in the universe. They seemingly corner her, but she is miraculously able to escape at the last minute. In other places, a boy named Rito watches as a girl named Haruna passes by with her friends. He decides that today would be the day, but he is interrupted by his friend Saruyama. Saruyama correctly guesses that Rito has been looking at Haruna again, but Rito expresses that this would be the day he confesses to her. This happens to be something he says quite often. In class, Rito recalls that he met Haruna in middle school. He had always liked her, but he could never get the chance to confess to her. In the past, Rito was caught in a situation he shouldn’t have been in. Everyone believed that he was the culprit of destroying a flower bed, but Haruna believed in him. This was the start of Rito’s love. Rito attempts again to confess his feelings to Haruna, but he is again interrupted. This time, it is by a crashing spaceship.

When Rito arrives home, Saruyama makes Rito realize over the phone that he is not ready to face girls. Rito is unable to stop panicking when he thinks about Haruna in the bath, then wondering what he should do. Something suddenly crashes in front of him, and Rito freaks after seeing that it is a naked girl. Rito attempts to tell this to his sister Mikan, but the girl is nowhere to be found when she looks into the bathroom. When Rito returns to his room, he finds that the girl is sitting on his bed. She introduces herself as Lala, coming from the planet Deviluke. Rito has a hard time believing that Lala is an alien, but she proves it to him by showing him that she has a tail. After showing Rito one of her devices, Lala reveals the situation she is in. The two are interrupted by the entrance of a creature named Peke, which turns out to be a costume robot created by Lala. To display its abilities, Lala quickly has Peke transform into her clothes. Lala believes she has a decision made about what she will do, but she is interrupted by a few of her pursuers. As she cannot use her bracelet because of its recent discharge, she has a hard time defending herself.

As disturbed about the situation he is in, Rito manages to help Lala escape out of his window. Rito quickly drags Lala across the town, exclaiming that he is unable to leave a defenseless woman alone. While the two travel across rooftops, Haruna sees them from below. Rito and Lala are unable to avoid their pursuers for long, when a man named Zastin appears to face them. Rito finally learns that Lala is actually running away from marriage on her home planet, but during his shock, Lala unleashes an attack against Zastin and his men. Lala does not remember how to stop her octopus like machine, however, so it ends up sucking in Rito along with everything else around. Rito recalls the ridiculous aftermath of that night while walking to school in the morning, when Haruna calls out to him. Rito is surprised that she would do this, but Haruna is actually concerned about what she saw the previous night. Rito decides that this is the only chance he has to confess to Haruna, but in actuallity, he unknowingly does this to Lala who has appeared before him. Lala agrees that she had the same feelings, deciding that they should get married. As Rito panics in confusion, Haruna puts on a concerned face.

ED: “Lucky Tune (ラッキーチューン)” by SANTOS ANNA – Didn’t get enough boobs in the OP? Don’t despair! I don’t like the ED nearly as much as the OP. The moving circles are kind of fun though….I guess.

Preview: Talk of marriage…the typical love comedy antics ensue!

Impression:

Holy crap, I laughed really hard after hearing Koyasu Takehito’s voice. He seriously must have the reputation of being in every anime known to man. I didn’t have high hopes for this series after watching the CM earlier, but I think watching the first episode has completely changed my mind. Lala’s high pitched voice didn’t bother me nearly as much as I thought it would, and it seems like Xebec won’t be throwing out trashy fanservice the same way Gonzo does. I’m already really liking a lot of the characters, especially Haruna and Rito’s sister Mikan. The art and animation was definitely passable, and I did like the style of the OP (past the pointless and rapid attack of boobs). Other than all that, the story is as typical love comedy as you can get. Boy is in love with girl, boy meets other girl through ridiculous situation, boy gets put in involving type situation with girl, hilarity ensues. Yes, I love it. Finding myself laughing constantly at parts including the mahou shoujo transformation, i think I’ve found my second pick for spring Thursdays.

and it seems like Xebec won’t be throwing out trashy fanservice the same way Gonzo does.

Because clearly Lala orgasming when her outfit changes is CLASSY fanservice.

YAYNESS!!! Leave it to Totali to blog the love comedies! ;) I was sort of heart broken (I mean, in “To-Rabu-Ru” *BA DUM PSSH*) that some of the bloggers were turned off by the whole harem thing, but glad I can now get some input from a reliable source (and a pretty handsome man for that matter =3)!

I do have one pet peeve about the series though (and manga that become anime in general) Its always so weird getting used to the hair colors. Like, I hate it when you read manga thinking some characters hair is black (because its clearly colored black in the pages), but later find out its completely different (ex: Haruna’s hair is not black…..ITS BLUE-ISH/PURPLE!!! D=) Still looking forward to this series though =D

oh, and does anyone else get Ken Akamatsu vibes from the manga? =3

I found many similarities between To Love Ru and Girl from Phantasia. Boy wants to date with girl, then an alien girl, or a girl from another dimension appears in front of the boy and mayhem begins. Even the scene where Lala appears in front of Rito is similar to the one scene in Girl fron Phantasia, and the main girls from both series share even the same hair color….very suspicious.

Besides that, I think this series will give me the fanservice dose I need for this season. I liked Girl from Phantasia, even if it was only one episode, so I will continue watching this and hope the plot / store are well balanced with the fanservice.

The only reason I’m not watching this is cos of fanservice.

  5. Dm April 3rd, 2008 10:41 pm

The OP is REALLY good, and the anime seems interesting. It’s too bad two certain characters won’t appear till maybe the 8th and 14th episodes, but this looks like a fun show.

“The only reason I AM watching this is cos of fanservice.”

    Fixed. =P

And because the manga is awesome. I’m glad at least one blog is giving this one a shot. =D

  7. Totali April 3rd, 2008 11:17 pm

The entire blogsphere may turn against me for this….but at least I’m having fun!!!1111

Hinano: “Because clearly Lala orgasming when her outfit changes is CLASSY fanservice.”

…I for one applaud this decision.

  9. Gil April 4th, 2008 12:27 am

I approve of this anime. (and of course the manga)

  10. Tokki April 4th, 2008 12:29 am

This title sounds so familiar. It was a manga, right?

  11. Danny Choo April 4th, 2008 1:20 am

    Loved the ecchi transformation scene ^^;

  12. Link April 4th, 2008 1:37 am

I’m serious when I say that you should kill yourself for liking this horrid garbage.

    I’m kidding, but still…

  13. daikaku April 4th, 2008 3:44 am

Heh, so they decided to make a terrible manga into a terrible anime? Good job.

  14. Deranged April 4th, 2008 6:23 am

Totali, I won’t turn against you… I will watch this no matter what… it has to be a better adaptation that rosario to vampire… I have high hopes for this, ala the manga… =P

  15. Di Gi Kazune April 4th, 2008 6:37 am

I side with hinano on this one! ToPantsu is a better tittle for this… I mean title.

I just wonder how deep the sludge at the bottom of the barrel is since every season it looks like scraping deeper and deeper.

  16. Narutodesu April 4th, 2008 6:44 am

Hope this gets subbed soon. I’ve been so lonely since Shakugan no Shana second and Clannad ended that I need new animes to fill the void! This looks like it’d be a nice funny love comedy.

  17. Leviahan DarklyCute April 4th, 2008 7:52 am

Yay! finally someone who doesn’t hate fanservice!
    Looks like an awesome show!:D

  18. Zeroblade April 4th, 2008 10:14 am

    Yay for boobs!

  19. ItAintEazy April 4th, 2008 10:33 am

Sorry, but I feel that the fanservice during this episode, thanks to the “wholesomeness” of TBS, was actually pulled back. And since they’ve Bowdlerized the ONLY thing that would interest me in the series, I’m gonna have to pass on this series. Maybe next time they can think of something original, like a sex-starved teenager gets to live with a magical-girl robot mermaid or something.

  20. [...] to grow has been limited to nothing from the beginning. To-LOVE-Ru is absolute shit. As they say, leave it to Totali to blog the show. It’s the one show of three mentioned in this post that I’ll be [...]

  21. Haesslich April 4th, 2008 8:09 pm

So far… it’s going the Rosario and Patsu route – more fanservice, minus most of the comedy of having a girl show up suddenly in your life. More boob shots than the manga.

My hopes are not set high by this, but we’ll see if the second ep is any better than R+V.

  22. Narutodesu April 9th, 2008 11:21 am

Rito reminds me of Otani from Lovely Complex, look wise, not personality.

  23. mao-kun April 16th, 2008 7:15 pm

    well…. at least it’s not like kanokon….

  24. eugorkrad April 30th, 2008 12:34 am

  25. Nocturn July 3rd, 2008 11:21 am

  26. Nocturn July 3rd, 2008 11:24 am

Oh and to my homie Totali.. Stay strong man I’m pulling for ya..

  27. Jacquires January 3rd, 2009 7:36 am

I could care less for the fanservice, but that aside it’s AWESOME 10/10.
