Summary:

When Rito wakes up in the morning, he is shocked to find Lala in his bed naked. Peke insists that it is troublesome to stay in Lala’s costume form all of the time, but Rito of course does not believe this is the problem. Mikan enters the room to wake her brother, but she quickly leaves after looking inside. Lala finally gets dressed afterwards, but Rito continues to complain about her actions. Lala states that these are only natural since they are engaged, but Rito insists that this is something she decided on her own. Zastin suddenly arrives through Rito’s window, explaining that Rito had proposed to Lala by grabbing her breasts when she first appeared before him. Rito expresses that this wasn’t his intention, but Zastin instantly begins threatening him. Unable to accept Rito’s suggestion that his proposal was a mistake, Zastin warns that Deviluke’s king would be quick to destroy Earth as punishment. Lala assures a worrying Rito that everything will work out, and Zastin leaves her in Rito’s hands. Rito is still confused, but he is reminded by Mikan that he will really be late to school if he doesn’t hurry.

Saruyama guesses that Rito is troubled about Haruna at school, so Rito vaguely explains his situation to him. When Haruna passes by the two, it appears as if she has really started to hate Rito. In class, Rito wonders what he should do about Haruna. He decides to follow her after class, but is unable to continue when she enters a changing room. Many boys around the school are amazed when they see Lala walk through the halls, but they are shocked when she attaches herself to Rito. When Lala announces that she is Rito’s wife with proof, the boys instantly become enraged and chase after Rito. While in the locker room, Haruna recalls her belief that Rito’s confession was meant for Lala and not herself. Cornered by the angry boys, Rito asks Lala to use her ring from the previous day. Lala generates the ring and successfully transports herself and Rito to another location, but it turns out that clothes cannot be transported as well. As Lala and Rito fall out of a locker in the nude, Haruna behind them is only able to wonder what they were doing. Seeing Rito’s appearance, Haruna gives him a slap and warns him not to approach her.

When Rito returns home, he is shocked to see Zastin is inside. He is further surprised, however, to find that Mikan very accepting about what Zastin has explained to her. Mikan gives her regards to Lala, while Rito takes the chance to talk to Zastin outside. Rito indirectly wonders what circumstances he would have to go through to cancel his marriage with Lala, so Zastin explains that a cooling off period would have to take place. Rito despairs that he would have to grab Lala’s boobs again in order to stop the marriage, but he becomes determined to do so in order for his future with Haruna. Rito makes attempts to touch Lala while she plays video games and enters the shower, but he fails both times because of disturbances. Mikan wonders what Rito is planning afterwards, warning her of the consequences of hurting a girl. Mikan has Lala sleep in her room that night, forcing Rito only to fall asleep with troubled thoughts in his mind.

Rito finds Lala in his bed again the next morning, but he is still unable to touch her because of Peke. After numerous failed attempts throughout the day, Rito finds that he only has one hour left before the time limit. Rito requests to have a talk with Lala, leading the two outside. When Rito brings up the marriage, however, Lala quickly replies that she was happy. Lala expresses that she had only been given gifts on her planet, but Rito was different. He listened to and believed in her, and even protected her. Because of all this, Lala thanks Rito. Rito is finally given a chance to speak, but even with his intentions his mind, he finds that the time limit has been passed. With this, Rito is congratulated on his way out to school the next morning by Zastin and his men. Rito decides that the school is the only place he can avoid Lala from now on, but he quickly despairs when Lala is introduced to his class as a student.

Preview: School antics and a trip to the aquarium.

Impression:

Banzai~! Banzai~! Banzai~! So, where have I seen this plot set up before? No…really? Everything in this episode was right on the dot, from enraged men at school, to the overly accepting sister, to the male protagonist who does not want to accept his fate with the very attractive girl that has fallen into his life. Despite this, I laughed really hard throughout this episode. After taking a closer look into Mikan, who has quickly become one of my favorite characters, I learned that she is actually played by Hanazawa Kana (who played Sora in Sketchbook, and Potemayo in…Potemayo). Her voice definitely showed through in this episode, probably because she actually had some screen time. On the other hand, Peke’s voice remains to be the only one I cannot stand in this show. Clothing robots don’t need to talk. Seriously.

Now, one question is brought up after taking some time to observe this episode. How do the aliens from Deviluke know Japanese? This is a typical thing in any science fiction story, but in DearS they at least explained this phenomenon. Meh, I’m definitely asking too many questions for such a shallow show. I definitely liked the love power vibes in the later part of the episode, and I can’t wait to see the inevitable development between our two protagonists. It’s only a matter of time before Rito is sent to Deviluke through some ridiculous event. At least, that’s what I’m guessing. I honestly wasn’t sure if I would keep up with this after learning that it would be 26 episodes, but I think I’ll be fine as long as these episodes can continue to make me laugh like this. Next week will be some fun with Lala entering the school as a student. I’m shocked.

This is unprecedented, I…wow. The sheer originality of it has left me speechless.

    You too!?

That’s easy. English/Japanese is spoken all over the universe – it’s just that us stupid Earthers don’t realize it. ;)

This is like nothing i’ve seen before! Guess what comes next, Totali. If you’ve seen one of these, you’ve seen them all. Regardless, I’m watching.

Sigh….this is what I expected that it’s gonna be. The manga is much better in my opinion. It’s quick, funny and get to the point. They add too many unnecessary scenes just to fill up the episodes. I mean, there are so many good scene in the manga like when Rito fights/avoids against Zastin. That was funny in the manga so why don’t they put it on? And what the hell, Based on the preview for next episode, why do they script 3-4 chapters of the manga? Oh well, that’s what happen when you have manga that’s not done and tried to make anime adaption to it. Nevertheless, I’ll still be watching this show though.

why don’t they just strip naked and have rabid sex in public and get it over with instead.

  7. Deranged April 11th, 2008 3:22 am

Oh god… i watched it and had very little clue of what was really going on … I had inklings due to some background help and some guesswork i got the gist though…

I will be rewatching this again just to see if i can get it understood better. My language skills are poor T___T but the show is so good XD

Heh… I didn’t make a comment after your episode 1 review, so I’ll just post this here.

Totali, don’t give up on this series. I know that’s kinda hard to do since the show is pretty much a generic harem anime, but I think if you stick around until some new faces pop up, it’s pretty much a laugh trip until the finale (which I’m guessing is when a certain King arrives…).

I can also sense a lot of haters for this anime… Just don’t mind them. I’ll be one of your background supporters here, since people can get a little bit pissy about other people’s opinion of this anime, so this would be my first and last comment for your To LOVE-ru reviews.

    Just keep on watching. Cheers.

    Just two words.
    Oppai Oppai.

Wait, so there is a tsundere now? Wow, if ever your blog served a purpose, it’s right here. If the episode is as ridiculous and predictable (ridiculously predicatable) as you summarized, then I’ll be glad not to waste precious bandwidth on this kiddie porn – as in porn that would only turn on 10-year-olds. I think I’ll just giggle at the summaries from now on.

  11. Totali April 11th, 2008 9:32 am

Great, now Subculture is going to get hits from people looking for kiddie porn. Thanks ItAintEazy. Thanks.

Haha, I totally agree that it’s almost strange to fall in love with it. For one, I think Lala as having definitely advantageous powers and basically being the alpha-female helps to make her somewhat unique.

  13. Di Gi Kazune April 11th, 2008 1:11 pm

This is kiddie pr0n? I can see hits triple now!

What everyone is really waiting for is for Lala to transport Rito to some girls-only area so he has to become Ritoko and cross dress.

8-ball says: Better not tell you now .

  15. Rentington April 11th, 2008 4:05 pm

Basically, this alien girl ruins his life. But, they seem to be jumping pretty far ahead with the manga, if I recall. The aquarium thing from the previews, I thought that was further down the road.

  16. ItAintEazy April 11th, 2008 8:30 pm

Hey, if it get’s to be a problem, you can always redirect folks to an FBI sting op.

  17. Rentington April 15th, 2008 1:08 am

Is it just me, or does it seem like the Lala doesn’t really like Rito that much. I don’t know…

  18. [...] a good summary on what went on, if you just can’t wait for the subs can be found here by totali. This episode was hilarious and Rito being chased down for being with a hot girl had me reeling [...]

Hmm it is true that the manga is a bit better.. But I think they did a good job with the anime regardless.. I will give it a chance.. I also recommend reading the manga.. This anime is hilarious I love the constant misunderstandings Rito goes through.. Reminds me of Seto no Hanayame *sigh* What a great loss that was..
