I have a theory:
Nagi is actually the holy tree itself, while the other personality we see from time to time is the actual God that used to reside in the tree.

What do you think?

^
You mean Unlucky Childhood Friend.
According to tvtropes.org there is a difference, unless Tsugumi is planning to turn Yandere in the series.

Sorry dude, but this will probably be the last Tsugumi episode you'll get to see for quite a while because she is gonna suffer the fate of forgotten childhood friend very soon if this follows the manga.

Tsugumi ftw. Sawashiro Miyuki was just outstanding in this ep. And the animation of her embarrassed flailing at about 4:54 was brilliant work. Not that the rest of the episode wasn't great, too.

The writer of this episode, Takahashi Tatsuya, is apparently an important game-writer, and wrote the ToHeart games. The somewhat clumsy-looking ending pic was by his colleague Minazuki Toru, the main artist behind ToHeart. I thought the animation direction seemed particularly good, too, by two young (I think) women, Kawasaki Aika and Kawano Maki.

Of course, Yamakan and his lead writer Kurata Hideyuki and animation director Kadowaki Satoshi deserve credit for every ep of this outstanding show.
