Summary:

In the alternate world, the robot boy has continued to bring parts to the girl’s house. The young girl has stopped being able to move as much because of the winter, but the robot refuses to stay with her as he leaves shortly after meeting her for the day. He would have to keep working hard, so that the two of them could be together forever. As Nagisa comes closer to having her baby, everyone around her does their best so that she can deliver properly in the not so distant future. Tomoya walks Sanae home one night, then taking the chance to wonder if she has a grudge against him. Tomoya describes how much stronger he and Nagisa had become after meeting, but he also wonders if she could have been happier if she had met someone else. Of course, Sanae does not think any of this is true at all. Nagisa eventually has Tomoya buy her another dango pillow as it approaches xmas and her birthday, so even their family of dangos seems to grow bigger.

At the start of the new year, Tomoya and Nagisa are met by several of their old friends. After awhile, Youhei takes the chance to ask Tomoya how he now feels as a parent. When Tomoya replies that he does not really know, and that he had only lived up to this point by doing his best with the person he wanted to spend time with, Youhei is relieved that Tomoya has not really changed at all. This causes Kyou and the others to mention that they felt the same way, as they thought Tomoya and Nagisa had gone far ahead of them in life. This leads to Kotomi’s suggestion of another world, and though the group does not initially understand all of her explanation, they eventually decide that there could be more than one world and future. This conversation strangely makes Tomoya remember Nagisa’s play, and the ended world.

Tomoya one day visits the hospital under construction, and is met by Akio shortly after. Tomoya brings up the feeling he has that Nagisa’s situation would worsen if the building were to continue, but Akio makes him realize that its being built is a good thing for the locales. As the city is continuing to change, Tomoya expresses that it seems like he may start to hate the town. A large snow falls upon the city that night, and Nagisa’s delivery comes faster than expected. The Furukawas and Yami arrive in time to help her give birth, and after what seems like forever, Tomoya is given the chance to hold Ushio in his arms. Nagisa seems to lose conscious after seeing her, however, and Tomoya despairs when she finally passes away. Recalling the time they spent together, all the way up until the point they first met, Tomoya regretfully believes that he and Nagisa should have never met. If they hadn’t, such a tragedy would have not occured.

Preview: The start of Tomoya’s depressing story.

[7:49pm] NOOOOOOOOOOoooooOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooOOOOOO!!!!!!!1111; ha;iusgw;ih aw! #J%@$&%& jwp4′ps;f;iahw;ougvå…of ha;hf;asfa fcku ;_;

[9:42pm] EDIT: ……..Hey guys. I’m back from getting my keyboard back after throwing it down the stairs in rage….. *sniff* ……… *teary wipe*

I know what you sickos were thinking! Well….I know what I was thinking anyways. Imagining what kinds of faces Nakahara Mai was making while playing her lines in this episode made a really serious scene actually give me grins and chuckles. Obviously, that changed pretty quickly after a few minutes. Despite the rage/sadness the ending caused though, this episode was actually very well put together from start to finish. Even while knowing what was going to happen after watching the movie, I was still very moved. I do feel like the animation studio borrowed quite a few influences from other popular series in various places though, and the cheerful ED at the end felt very out of place.

The conversation Tomoya and friends had early in the episode had me thinking of several scenes from one of my favorite series, Noein, and it really made me want to go on a rant about time planes suddenly. I think I mentioned my realization about the robot and girl’s role in the overall story a bit earlier last season, and their story really started taking hold in this episode. Still avoiding spoilers, do note the robot boy’s mention of his working so that he and the girl could live together. And while on this topic, I have to bring up that I still absolutely love the 3D animation Kyoani has been using for the said scenes.

Interesting how they show some of there more intimate moments in the montage at the end.
Also that you don’t see anyone else in the room at the end…but can almost hear Nagisa’s parents and the midwife in the distance at one or two points….I wonder….

    I wonder….

  3. ginytah January 29th, 2009 10:34 pm

T_T nooo! … but Im still waiting for the true end in the last episode.. KISEKI O SHINJITE!

We already had this discussion on IRC.

I told you something was suspicious about Nagisa getting pregnant so early. Now we get the (depressing) bad ending, which is admittedly good. Otherwise we would have gotten filler-garbage since the original had no epilogue (technically it did, but it came in a fucking slide-show format) for the good ending. Personally, I would have liked to see the latter.

Wow, I didn’t believe Kyoto Animation had the balls to troll like this… just wow.

  5. Haesslich January 29th, 2009 10:52 pm

Sad thing is, Nagisa looks much better when she’s about to die than when she looks like a ten year old. I’m glad Tomoya gets his Bad End, though.

Yuki-nee! It looks like Yukine really DID consolidate her position as The Boss of the city’s delinquents.

  7. Totali January 29th, 2009 11:32 pm

Always looking at the bright side of things!

  8. Haesslich January 30th, 2009 12:16 am

Totali: Nagisa dying really is a bright side for Kanon, especially since it sends that loser Tomoya into a pit of despair. ;) That, and a about to die Nagisa is a lovely-looking Nagisa in her own right, and not because she’s about to kick the bucket.

  9. Di Gi Kazune January 30th, 2009 6:28 am

Maternal death! Hospital sued for imcompetence!

  10. taka January 30th, 2009 8:51 am

The ED rubbed salt in the wound for me. Damn that stupid happy song torch. This would have been a perfect place for Dango Daikazoku from the first season. Or the slow piano version they were playing earlier.

    FUCK YOU HAPPY ED SONG

  11. Totali January 30th, 2009 11:09 am

It’s not like it’s uncommon to leave the ED completely out either. Nagisa dance party after her demise? Please, Kyoani. It’s not funny.

  12. aurabolt January 30th, 2009 11:49 am

“Nagisa dance party after her demise? Please, Kyoani. It’s not funny.”

    Oh man…oh man… lmao

  13. skoll January 30th, 2009 6:48 pm

    Phhtttttt….

This is what you get for being backwards. Guess what wouldn’t have happened if they had stayed at a hospital like normal people? I’m not disappointed so much as rather ticked off.

There’s a biiiiig fat line between being sentimental and being stupid and they crossed it a while ago.

  14. eugorkrad January 30th, 2009 8:09 pm

    ohgawd…. no more nagisa… :(

  15. Zero January 30th, 2009 8:57 pm

    POSSIBLE SPOILERS******

Just to let everyone know, in the visual novel, you have to go through the bad ending first, then you have to go back and collect the light orbs. You’ll get to watch the happy ending after collecting all the light orbs, but it is required in the game to play through the bad ending to be able to play through the good one.
Kyoani is probably just make the anime as close to the game as possible, so there’s still a high chance that we’ll get to see Nagisa again. :)

  16. teamchancery January 30th, 2009 11:03 pm

Please i dont believe this ending for a minute i think hes gonna get all depressed zone off on the lige without nagi blah blah then snap back and realize life with her was the right choice then all the orbs come into play snap back to scene with him holding in her hand and TADA shes alive

  17. teamchancery January 30th, 2009 11:08 pm

i mean why show me how the series ends in the movie right b4 the airing of the series and then do it the same way..no point or suspense wud be in the show anymore

Ill believe it when i see it and thats at ep 24.25 or whatever

  18. eugorkrad January 30th, 2009 11:36 pm

ohgawd…i just noticed that tomoya represents the girl, and the robot thingy represents nagisa O.o

  19. taka January 31st, 2009 3:44 am

I thought it was vice versa?

Anyway knowing that this could potentially turn out to be the good ending didn’t make it any less emotionally impactful for me. I watched the anime to be engrossed in it if I didn’t connect emotionally why watch it at all?

  20. Di Gi Kazune January 31st, 2009 5:40 am

Can we kill them all off instead? :3

  21. FlameStrike January 31st, 2009 7:04 am

They are waayy too poor to be staying at a hospitale for extended amounts of time. They planned to have the baby at the hospitale but it turns out all the friggen cards were turned against them. Nagisa gave birth two weeks early, and it just happened to be in the middle of a friggen snow storm (The ambulances can’t get their in time), AND she just had a fever… WTF!?

  22. TomoyaXNagisaXUshio January 31st, 2009 11:42 am

noooo!!!!! i wanted the happy ending so badly! fter all the bad things that have happened to them, i wanted at least one thing in their life to be nice! awwwwww i really wish Nagisa could come back… like someone was saying about the orbs. I want them to live in their happy Big Dango family TT~TT man i was crying so much at the end. i never really saw the movie, but i heard that nagisa died there too. i was really hoping that they wouldn’t carry that on to the anime….. i guess i was wrong. anyways, final thought is that i’m super upset about Nagisa dying and i hope she really comes back or something because i’m not going to be satisfied!

  23. Haseo January 31st, 2009 2:06 pm

Don’t forget my words: “Nagisa is not going to die and KyoAni can surprise me”

  24. Haseo January 31st, 2009 2:07 pm

    Ah I mean KyoAni can’t surprise me…-_-

  25. 32 January 31st, 2009 2:58 pm

Great episode, but the thing I feared the most occurred.
Having the stupid ED right after what happened this episode…
I know KyoAni usually don’t make a new ending song, but for this one occassion should have put an insert at least.

11/10 episode dropped to 10/10 because of stupid ED song

    Insert Dango Daikazoku plz

  26. Neppi January 31st, 2009 5:29 pm

I think KyoAni will make the sad ending. And then Kotomis idea of another worlds will work and then NAgisa will be alive. I DON’T WANT THAT! This Ending is sad, sure, but it’s kind of better then the happy sort. I don’t want any unlogical things to be happen! IF Nagisa is dead, she should be dead for ever. (I don’t hate Nagisa! But in an anime you can’t play again for gaining all light orbs, so in the anime it will be very unlogical -.-) PLEASE KYOANI, DONT MAKE IT THIS WAY :( .

  27. Narutodesu January 31st, 2009 6:55 pm

I hope that after this they have another bonus episode or 2 that would show what would happen if Tomoya was going the Ryou/Kyou route like they did with Tomoyo.

  28. Kaisos January 31st, 2009 8:16 pm

Fujibayashi Twins route needs at least 2-3 episodes.

I’d like, you know, an OVA-length OVA, myself.

Not the crappy 20 minutes that was the Tomoyo Chapter. Bleh.

@Neppi: First, “unlogical” isn’t a word, and second, Tomoya IS gathering light orbs. It just isn’t shown…

  29. kev3458 February 1st, 2009 3:51 am

Maybe there’ll be a sad ending and a happy OVA…still hoping for the best.

  30. Neppi February 1st, 2009 4:50 am

    @Kaisos
    Sorry, i mean illogical.
Yes i know, but he didn’t gather all orbs. For example the Akio Arc and the Sanae Arc wasn’t shwon in any way. perhaps it will be shown in the next Episodes (then everybody knows what that means for the ending of ~AS~ for people who have played the VN).
I don’t hope that they make an Ova showing the Fujibayashi Twin route. It’s kind of boring in the VN.

  31. Jon February 1st, 2009 12:54 pm

To be completely honest, KEY tends to do this a lot, however it did just about bring me to tears. I hate it when shows let a main character die, especially one so important. Poor Tomoya and Ushio. t.t

I kind of see where this is going. I haven’t played the visual novels at all, but this shows a striking resemblance how he (Tomoya) was brought up. I can’t wait for the next episode, but out of all seriousness, I’m going to have to reflect on this episode a bit, it’s kind of hard to swallow. :-/

  32. Haseo February 1st, 2009 2:29 pm

KEY is very repetitive cough *someone said Kanon* cough *air*…after all I only hope that Nagisa die and stay in her grave forever :3… demo the big problem is KyonAni.

    Misterious girl = Ushio(?)
    Robot= Emoya
New ED = KyoAni Bad move.

  33. Danzi February 2nd, 2009 2:06 am

::possible spoiler or just an off tangent idea::(being honest)

could it be that he thinks she died? like for instance, he so scared of whats opening that hes taking his whole relationship with her into perspective and what she means to him. examining his life without her, or if they never got involved, or even what it will be like if shes gone. like an EPIC daydream (or daymare if that’s a word).

sry if i sound like the optimist, but her death seems to be forced (what part of that sounds optimistic ~_~). just taking into account whats known (from the series so far, not the movie) it’s provable that the stress from child-birth + a fever + total lack of medical care, could cause her to slip into a comma (que the soap opera music “bum bump baaa”)

or i may be completely wrong…..(sad face)

  34. Danzi February 2nd, 2009 2:08 am

sry “happening” not “opening” (i dont even know how that happened)

  35. Neppi February 2nd, 2009 6:06 am

This misterious girl is surely Ushio. I think you can see it because of her eyes. It’s a pity that i don’t even understand this illusionary world thing in the Novel xD I don’t know if this girl is really Ushio but i really believe this^^
I know, what the robot is :3 but i don’t say it.
The ending pissed me off. Year Nagisa dance ! <— ??? It’s kind off *ARGHHHH* After a episode like that i don’t want a Song which is full of happiness -.-

  36. Chuba February 4th, 2009 2:17 am

“(The ambulances can’t get their in time)”

I don’t know about that. The time that was spent in labor seemed quite long, and even in a heavy snowstorm, emergency services would likely have been able to get there in a reasonable amount of time. At least, given her frail nature, it seems to me that taking chances and calling emergency once it became apparent what was happening would have been the wisest course of action.

Yeah, this is all silly second-guessing, but that, to me, is what makes something worth watching, when the “why didn’t they…?” thoughts begin. This never happens (at least with me) when I’m watching something not as interesting…

  37. Chuba February 4th, 2009 2:18 am

“it seems to me that taking chances and…”

Er, that should read, “NOT taking chances”….

  38. Phaith February 8th, 2009 8:01 am

I agree with some of the other comments. I loved to hate the ending of the movie, but I thought for sure they would have the happy ending for the series. Double dosage of the sad ending is just super depressing. I had to cry twice, urgh,
