Clannad After Story – 17
I shall call her…..Mini Nagisa.
Summary:
In the alternate world, the robot starts to realize that his creation is ineffective because he is not human. The young girl approaches him shortly after, and while embracing him, notices how sad the world around them is. The world would be filled with snow soon, and if the girl were to stop moving, the robot would be all alone. Tomoya’s life has changed drastically for the worse, as he simply lives by going to work and spending his money on worthless things in his free time. His hatred of the town returned, but he did not know what he could do if he were to leave it. He had also started to believe that everything, from his meeting of Nagisa to their having a child, was a mistake. Tomoya wakes one day to meet Sanae at his door, and after seeing that Tomoya has not really been going outside often lately, she offers to go on a date with him in the city.
While the two travel to the family restaurant he once frequented, Tomoya notices that the city has changed quite a bit since the last time he saw it. Sanae eventually suggests to Tomoya that he and the rest of the family go on a trip together, and although Tomoya initially tries to avoid this, he cannot help but agree after Sanae’s constant asking for him to. Tomoya was actually lost, but he felt as if he would be betraying Sanae if he refused. When Tomoya visits the Furukawa household later though, he only finds a message from Sanae stating that she and Akio had to leave under sudden circumstances. With this, Tomoya realizes that he was set up. Tomoya walks around the house while catching glimpses of his daughter running around, finally getting Ushio’s attention after calling her name.
Tomoya acts rather indifferent towards Ushio as he spends his time at the Furukawa household with her. When she shows him a broken toy though, he fixes it for her. Tomoya eventually leaves to buy food, meeting an old acquaintance from the neighborhood. As Ushio had followed Tomoya without his knowing, the woman expresses how it wouldn’t be odd for Tomoya and his daughter to be living in different homes because of the difficulty. Tomoya does confirm that he visits Ushio every once in awhile, however. Ushio does not enjoy Tomoya’s fried rice after they return home, but she makes due with plain rice afterwards. After a night, Tomoya sees that Sanae and Akio have still not come home. He eventually brings up the trip again, and even if it is only with him, Ushio agrees to go with Tomoya. It had been five years since Tomoya had left Ushio with the Furukawas, and this was the first time since then that he was alone with her.
Preview: Father and daughter trip!
Impression:
C-c-CUTE~!!!! Did I forget about last week’s events after the first proper introduction of Ushio? Maybe not, but I was definitely distracted. From her amazing faceplant to her several other childhood antics, I definitely became a fan of Ushio upon first (second?) sight. She’s played by Koorogi Satomi, who I am not the most familiar with; but anyone who’s played Togepi in Pokemon has to be win, right? As this was after a five year time skip, I did feel like Tomoya’s change was represented quite well. His existence became like that of too many others in the world, and the sight of his spending money on worthless things like cigarettes made me feel both annoyed and sympathetic. His yelling at some woman’s little girl in the preview didn’t help my impression either. That’s definitely a good sign of characterization though, and I can’t wait to see how this all develops. Obviously, I’m hoping for a more positive ending once it all ends.
Aesthetically, these past two episodes have been pushing some boundaries that Kyoani usually keeps to. The early camera imitation that represented Tomoya’s looking for Ushio when Sanae met him was awesome, and Ushio’s skipping into the ED to follow Nagisa’s footsteps almost…….almost made me want to forgive the studio for the horrible ED placement in the last episode.
Notes:
- LF “The Girl and Her Robot” spinoff, PST.
- Sanae the playa.
- Jiiiii~
- Look’s like “Aki” got approved.
- Poor turtle indeed =(.
- SAYUURRRIIIIII…..!!!!
- I have seasoning like that too. Ushio has good taste.

…the sight of his spending money on worthless things like cigarettes made me feel both annoyed and sympathetic.
A lot like his dad? You’ll see.
USHIO SHE DOESN’T LIKE PEPPER IN HER FRIED RICE
Apparently, every Kyoto Animation anime has the same stuffed animal collection. We’ve seen the anteater; I wonder when the sloth will appear?
This show… man. It really is something.

Wow, it’s hard to picture Sanae as a GRANDMA.
It’s ironic how he hates his own father, but has ended up being so much like him. I also find it strange that he seem to have no friends. I wonder what all his old friends from his school-days has been doing the last five years?
One would think that they would try and help him out when Nagisa passed away.
Here’s the belated tears for the last episode ;_;.
Anyways, wow, fast timeskip is fast. I guess they simply don’t represent aging well in Key moemations, do they? And I wonder what Tomoya was smoking since Ushio does NOT look mannish . . . okay, maybe in this shot she does.
Yea, the parallels Tomoya is sharing with his father are pretty easy to point out. I already watched the movie to learn about that, but it’s still not hard to guess what will happen without spoilers.
@Phocus: omg you’re NOT suppose to mention that.
@ItAintEazy: Musta been something extra in those cigarettes. I was actually not looking forward to a long drawn out “wait and watch Ushio grow up” thing, so I’m glad they skipped right to the good stuff.
I earlier in episode 16 said that i read how tomoya will live with Ushio and after she will get sick and also die, and right now that seems to be what will happen. I so totally hope im wrong though.
Oh but I read that apparently the robot has a big part in the story and there might actually be a happy ending. NAGISA, TOMOYA, USHIO, I love youuuuuuuuuuuuuuu.
i’m sorry emotional breakdown. sad but great story can’t stop watching it.
Isn’t it too soon for this part of the story? They have 6 or 7 episodes left to broadcast and I don’t think there’s enough material left to fill that in properly.
didn’t the subs go on a little too early?
Maybe they do…maybe they don’t.
Let’s find out shall we?
I did sort of hope that they would bring the other characters around a little more to lighten things up. I feel the same way as I think Tomoya is feeling though. Everytime I look at Ushio I see little Nagisa. I got a little teary eyed when they first showed her. Especially when I think of all the thoughts going through Tomoya’s head at that moment.
I would be interested not in seeing Ushio growing up but in seeing Tomoya’s falling out with his friends If such a thing could have happened being an adaptation and all. Complete maybe with scenes of Kyou attempting to use her body to comfort Tomoya. Yeah that’d be niiiiice…
Aha~ so cute. I can’t wait for the next few episodes.
Well I noticed that he used to have a TON of mail, those could be from his former friends trying to get in touch with him. He probably ignored them or pushed them away. Besides they have their own lives to get on with too. Unlike highschool they can’t spend all of their time worring about Tomoya.
Yeah and Ushio is soo cute. I can’t believe their were some people bashing Nagisa on her foolishness/stupidity for risking her life to give Ushio a chance to live. I’ve even seen “She was playing with her life” x.x They’d rather see her abort Ushio! >=(
UHUUU Sanae GILF FTW!!!
He is grooming his daughter to be his replacement waifu. Chilling thought of the day.
Don’t confuse Tomoya with Reiji in Kodomo no Jikan :<
More like Ushio is a poor replacement for Nagisa in his mind.
There is no replacement for Nagisa..there is only a suppliment in Ushio. However Uhio is her own brand.
If it is as people say…more room than material, we could get an earlier story arc placed in here late….or bonus Fuko-like randomness. I miss the comedy sometimes. While this is a drama, the humor is great in Clannad.
i hope they fill in some of the gap with flashbacks. (even though technically they would be new to us). if this what hes like after 5years, im curious to see him a day 2
I wouldn’t doubt there being flashbacks or the usual friends even visiting in the present time. They did in the movie.
Also, upon a second (third? fourth? C…cute…) watch, it looks like it was actually Ushio in the ED all along; not Nagisa. Omni thinks so too.
After watching the past few episodes, I’m astounded by KyoAni’s foray into life, going beyond the original cliched highschool love, but into adulthood and passing lives.
I have come to respect Tomoya as a human being rather than a character in a story.
Ushio -> Kinda not cute imo…
@Totali: Yeah, I realized that a while back. I first assumed it was Nagisa in the ED, but noticed that the legs were noticeably “fat” and short, somewhat like a young child. Then the final evidence was when I saw a little bit of the top half of the uniform; it didn’t fit into any uniform that Nagisa wore– it was, in fact, Ushio!
Shame to those who thought that Nagisa was dancing in the ED after her own death… Then again, it’s her own kid who’s dancing, so that’s even more twisted…
I think Nagisa’s 5year old daughter has a deeper voice than she did.
She was really cute eating the bitter fried rice though.
Shio-chan~ I want to hug her!
I cant believe you guys thougt that it was nagisa at the ED. and dancing. the first time i saw it i already thought it was ushio. given the preview of the second season and, well, the height.
Ushio is dancing because daddy married her… -brain implosion-
lol i acually didn’t know that it was ushio’s feet……USHIO IS SUPAH CUTE……
i wish tomoya was a timy bit nicer…..:P and i wanted to see how akio/ sanae reacted when nagisa died….taht would of been cool!
this time i almost cried watching the OP
and what’s with next episode’s title?
Can’t believe Akio actually made her say, “Akii” and not “Ojiisan”.
Did anyone notice that the anteater plush is another reference to Kanon 02/ Kanon 06 for Mai?
My fave. lines were “Ita…da…ki…ma…su…”. That was too cute. Another is “I went all on my own” during the potty scenes. That rice scene was awesome too.
If I remember correctly, the movie had Ushio appear in the end after Tomoya’s train trip, but I like this better. He can bond and see what he’s missing and not missing. In the movie, Tomoyo and Sunohara came before the trip to consult with Tomoya. His dad came too, but we can save all the emo and drama for later.
I really adore mini-Nagisa. I think by now we have a clue about the Girl and Robot scenerio. I also hope Ushio can call Tomoya, “Otousan” because she hasn’t said it yet. ^^
I imagine she’ll call him “papa” instead.
Papa-san needs to be lectured by Kyou-sensei!
And yes, mini Nagis…er…Usio-chan is really cute, some scenes really makes me want to hit Tomoya in the head…but we’ve seen what he went went trough and can’t help but sympathize cuz’ we can at least imagine his despair.
Although…the dark part of me is saying “He’s single again! *Holds a ‘CHANCE!’ sign to the other girls*”…
I’m just releived I didn’t have to rewatch the drama which made up most of the movie. This one episode basically skipped the entire movie, and put me in a better mood after episode 16 (I watched back-to-back).
Ushio is incredibly adorable, and the interaction with Tomoya is fantastic and believable.
Proof of fuko’s return……

I hope she isn’t going to be annoying
