Clannad After Story – 20
FUUKO-ONEECHAN!
Summary:
As Ushio’s teacher has returned to school, Tomoya goes to the school early with his daughter to meet her. Upon reaching the school, Tomoya is surprised to meet a very large boar that Ushio refers to as “Nabe.” To his further shock, Ushio’s teacher turns out to be none other than Kyou. The two quickly get reacquainted, and Tomoya explains to Ushio that Kyou went to school with both he and Nagisa. This was the first time Ushio had heard of this, so Kyou explains that Sanae had wanted her to keep quiet about it until Tomoya returned. Kyou brings up the old group of friends and their thinking about Tomoya at times, as she confirms that he is now fine. Tomoya also wonders about Ushio, so Kyou reveals that she is much like her mother; but a bit more outgoing. Kyou also confirms that the large boar at the school is Botan. As more students start to arrive at the school, Tomoya heads to work with a smile for both Kyou and Ushio.
At work, Yoshino mentions Fuuko’s wish to visit him soon. She wanted to become friends with Ushio, and as she was in the middle of rehabilitation, this was a chance he did not want to let go of. Further more, it was rare for her to reach out to other people in such a way. After a few days, Fuuko finally arrives at Tomoya’s apartment to visit. This begins a long string of antics, dealing with Fuuko’s starfish bread, her wanting to make Ushio her younger sister, her having Tomoya compare her with Nagisa, talk of aliens, and ridiculous “what if” discussions over lunch. As the group starts playing cards later, Fuuko questions what Ushio knows about her mother. As Ushio describes her traits, Tomoya cannot help but recall Nagisa and wonder what it would be like if she were still living. Before leaving, Fuuko offers to visit Tomoya anytime he needed her support.
As Tomoya picks up Ushio one day, Kyou brings up that the school’s sports festival would be coming soon. Tomoya finds that the Furukawas are knowledgeable about this when he visits them, and that Akio is quite active in it. Akio and Tomoya of course challenge each other from then on, as Tomoya starts to train in the following days. Fuuko one day meets Ushio as she wanders the town alone, which is something that she does quite often. Fuuko wonders if Ushio is not afraid of getting lost among other things, but Ushio denies. The two girls eventually reach the large hospital that had been completed recently, and though Fuuko notices that Ushio likes the area, she cannot explain why. The sports festival comes close to approaching as Tomoya visits the Furukawas on another night, but to the family’s alarm, they learn that Ushio has become quite sick.
Preview: Ushio suffers Nagisa’s fate?
Impression:
I told you Fuuko was ready to kidnap Ushio!!! From the return of her beloved starfish to her constant stream of childhood antics, I almost overloaded from Fuuko cuteness in this episode. Add Ushio to the mix, and there was no way to avoid a moexplosion™. On the other side of the spectrum, I’m sure a horde of fans were quite happy in their pants to see Kyou’s return. This reunion might have even been more fun because of its inevitability. I’m not sure if I like Botan’s new look though. I love how Ushio is able to ride and even slide on him, but what happened to the cute little boar look we all loved in the first season?? Also, as great as both Fuuko and Kyou are, I’m not digging some of the conversation around the net about Tomoya’s possibly hooking up with other girls. Come on, guys. Nagisa is rolling in her grave.
As fun as this episode was, there were a ton of touching moments as well. The insert songs, most notably the return of “Dango Daikazoku,” were placed perfectly. I was intrigued by Ushio’s wandering around the town in an unexplainably aesthetic way, and the sight of the completed hospital brought up a whole new level of wonder. With only a few episodes left, it looks like the story can only escalate upwards again after this short break. Ushio is clearly suffering from the same unnamed disease that Nagisa had, which doesn’t spell out good news no matter how you look at it.

My friend spoiled several things on the anime, much to my displeasure, as I was hoping to watch this show without anymore spoilers.
What my greatest interest is how Kyoto Animation will END this series. As many of you Clannad visual novel players know, there’s a certain ending you get if you complete a certain number of things.
Also, http://subculture.animeblogger.net/images/clannad/clannadafter20_12.jpg
T_T bawwwww…
I think this “disease” is like equating Nagisa & Ushio’s health with the “town”. So when that hospital was built and that “negai ga kanau basho” was destroyed, so was taken Nagisa’s life.
Game player alert. Don’t let her spoil you!!!
But yea, that brings up questions about what is happening to Ushio now that the hospital has been established…
translation of next episode title-
THE ENDOF THE WORLD
=O
Really, between the opening for the original season, After Story, and the After Story 15-second preview on the 8th DVD, everything that’s going to happen is spelled out as is, knowledge of the game or not.
Of course, I say that, and for all I know Kyoto Animation could do something unexpected, but I doubt it.
Also, what the heck is this? Dango cosplay? I’m amused:

i wish for this picture to happen for real.

A Haiku on the end of the episode:
The Town gives its Gifts
It dispenses Life and Joy
Gifts can be revoked.
LILFS for totali.
Looks like Kyou-sensei is still in love with Tomoya.
As far as Nagisa rolling in her grave goes…If you die wouldn’t you want your spouse to move on, find a companion and mother for his child? Video game magic ending aside, I don’t think Tomoya should have to live the rest of his life alone, especially when he has this nice harem lying around.
He has Ushio.
@Diss: I agree with that, I hope they don’t do a frikin magical revival or a frikin reset button or else all the things like the drama they built up so far will all be gone to waste. It’s like what the hell was the point of that if everything was going to be alright in the end?
So I’m actually hoping that if by any miracle will happen, and that’s just to the extent that Ushio will be cured and will live. Since I’m a Kyou shipper, and also because she fits with the circumstances very well and is quite compatible with Tomoya just as seen in this episode alone (even Ushio was looking at the two surprised that they get along so well); besides it’s a perfect setup. One can hope that they go with this ending, but I know just as most fans probably know that they will do a magical reset button. I certainly still hope they dont.
Nagisa rolling in her grave? if she could talk to Tomoya, she would say something along the lines of “please don’t mind me, find your happiness!”
Though, however much I would like for Tomoya to get married to Kyou (she’s still single, isn’t she? what a shame T_T) I don’t think it will happen, that would be too sudden; and it seems unlikely for Tomoya to do that.
On a different note, in the visual novel, I saw absolutely no mention of Ushio going to that hospital; in my opinion, that’s the first serious divergence from the visual novel. Great, we probably won’t get the bad end! ^^
Oh, and I forgot to say…
I *loved* how “Akio-ish” Tomoya acted. ^^
One more thing I forgot:
Botan’s new look would be, in my eyes, an illustration of “Nothing can stay unchanged”, one of the (in my eyes) important themes of the series.
Except for the majority of the characters’ appearances, right? ;P
It seems like everything in the opening has come true so far. Kyou being Ushio’s teacher, Fuko re-awakening, All the arcs they did, so now I’m wondering, what’s going to happen w/ Ryou? She was crying in the OP, I don’t remember seeing that yet. And Nagisa standing in the field on sunflowers, the ones Ushio was running in, in the first season of Clannad’s opening, and the ones she and Tomoya visited. Plus the other world’s story hasn’t been completed yet. Nagisa is going to come back, they’re going to grant a wish and she is going to come back. But I’m really wondering just how they’re going to, if they will at all cover Ryou’s story. If I remember correctly she gets with another guy in the game. Maybe they’re just going to leave her out because she’s not that popular. Though in my opinion I loved all of these characters and for some reason I feel attached to each and every one of them. I hope they end this series in an epic way.
Ushio is gonna die I Feel It!!! D’=
About “Nothing can stay unchanged”
I wonder how Mei-chan would look now, after five o six years? If she reappears in the series, she would be 18-20, so she couldn’t be a loli (I don’t know if it’s good or not. It depends on your tastes).
About Sanae, if you made a simple calculation: she could have Nagisa at 20. Nagisa dies at 21, so when that happened, Sanae was 41-42, plus five years it’s 46-47. Nowadays, women don’t get older so early and there are some women very “young” at their late 40s or 50s (e.g. Madonna).
About “Nagisa rolling in her grave”
Kyou-shippers can continue fantasizing. Kyoto have chosen the canonic end. There’s no “Kyou being Ushio’s step-mother” ending in the game (or maybe, I’m wrong). In this episode, Fuuko had more screentime than Kyou and the first dialogue Kyou-Tomoya was about Nagisa. Finally, Clannad is not a romantic-oriented series, but a drama about family, there’s no real harem in Clannad.
I actually found the dango daikazoku tidbit to be rather lacking…
come on kyoani, still pictures for 1.5 minutes? what happened to the amazing animation skills?
UBER BOTAN!!!!!!!!!!!! YAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAYAY!!!!!
NOOOOOOOOOOOO USHIO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ANYTHING BUT USHIO!!!!!!!!!!!1111oneoneeleven
Hmmmmmm…
Invasion of the Dango People.
Ushio wants to eat Botan D: Calling her “nabe”
I was afraid of watching this episode, and I said before that Fuuko was good only in small doses.
Turns out I was right, again.
The last couple of these episodes have been some of the most heartwarming and tear-jerking episodes of any anime this year. I admit it didnt start out the best way but Clannad really started to separate itself from every other anime out right now with these last episodes. I like my Toradora, Index, and any other decent show as much as the next person but as of right now they cant hold a candle next to how human Clannad makes you feel. I thought the scene where Tomoya started singing and showed him dreaming of Nagisa and Ushio was the best scene of the episode. Then when you saw him shed a tear just shows us how much he loves Nagisa. So I really hope they do hit the reset button and give Tomoya the life him and the rest of his family should of had from the start.
I agree with the other people making comments on the “Nagisa rolling in her grave” comment. It’s been 5 years since she died (story time)! That’s more than enough time to move on.
You know, it’s hilarious how every single Kyou rabid fanboy still thinks that Tomoya is going to end with Kyou.
To all of those people: Wow. Are you serious? Do you really, really, truly believe that? Like, think about that.
That’ll make by further extent the whole “Nagisa and Tomoya fall in love, date, and marry eachother” feel completely damn pointless. It’s like the anime kicking you in the pants being like “HAHA, GOT YA! THOSE 20 EPISODES WERE FOR NOTHING HE LOVES KYOU FORGET NAGISA LOLOLOLOL”
In other words: It’s not going to happen, keep it in your pants. I don’t know what everyone has against Nagisa. I don’t know how after every heart warming moment that has shown that his heart lies with Nagisa how you could NOT wish for him to be with her again. I really feel the poor guy’s pain, and I only wish that, as infinite757 said, he can have the proper life his family should have had from the start.
It is true five years is along time and thats long enough for anyone to move on. I think though in someway he has moved on in his life. In them five years he basecly stopped moving on with his life. He was blaming Ushio and himself for Nagisa death and dealing with it by drinking and smoking. When he finaly had that moment of clarity with Ushio that in its own self was him moving on. If all the magical elements were striped from the show and Key animation was telling a story based on the real reality of life he most likely would move on and probably with Kyou. The truth is we all know what it feels like to lose someone or something and never get it back. So its good to see a happy ending cause we see so many bad ones in real life.
Maybe 5 years isn’t enough time for HIM to move on though, it’s different for everyone afteral. Besides, he just started a new life with his child, becoming a family with her should take top priority in his life, as it is. I don’t think Ushio would like a new woman being thrown into the mix when she’s just finally getting some quality time with her dad. And finally, not everyone needs to move on after their love one dies, sometimes just having that one true love is enough. That doesn’t mean they will die lonely and unhappy, there is more to life then just being in a romantic relationship afteral.
I dont want HIM to move on in the show. I like the fact that everything will work out in the end. Thats why its a good show to watch cause its nice to imagine turning something that tragic around and getting a second chance. But if this was in the real world it is most likely someone in his circumstance would move on. Maybe not in 5 years but in 10 or 15 years its a high chance he might move on. Im not saying stop loving the mother of his child or to forget how he got to that point in his life either or he could not move on that could happen to. Be real though it happens everyday. People fall in love everyday. More then once even on some occasions.
@ infinite- I wasn’t referring to you at all, sorry for the confusion. I was directing my point at people above who were mentioning him getting together with another girl. Another person mentioned the 5 year thing and said, “It’s been 5 years since she died (story time)! That’s more than enough time to move on.”
Mybad thats me being dumb.
Haha no you weren’t being dumb! I can totally see why you thought I was referring to your post, but I actually agreed with your opinion
I don’t mind the magic element that will probably occur at the end, because I think after all this sadness a happy ending is well deserved. I don’t think him ending up with Kyou would have the same happy ending sort of feel as him being a family with his wife and daughter would be.
Definitely not. I shouldnt of even wrote her name. I was just trying to level with him, cuz I dont see them two being nothing but friends. It was proven in like episode 20 of Clannad that she was never seen more then friend anyways.
Actually, is watching Tomoya’s reactions to the mentioning of Nagisa, the look he gives the photo of Nagisa, and his crying in his sleep while dreaming of what could have been….he’s not ready to move on. That much should be clear. He’s managed to stop blaming and moving up to being a father. But he’s clearly not ready to let someone take Nagisa’s place in his heart. Maybe in time that wound would heal, but then again maybe it won’t.
Some people remain widowers for life simply because they loved their spouce, and no one can replace them in their mind or heart. It is just how some people are. Other people get hitched five minutes after the funeral because they can’t stand being alone. People are different.
It is just that the way Tomoya’s feelings are presented…he’s not interested in replacing Nagisa. Not at this point at least. And with the sudden fever…he’s not going to be interested either…his focus is on Ushio. On being a father.
ithekro, your post = win
Fuck…
Fuck…
Yesterday, I just watch all Clannad AS episodes from 5 to 20… T.T
I never cried like this watching an anime, not even watching Kanon or Air…T.T
Clannad is indeed for me the best anime since a long time…
Wonderful and adult slice of life between Tomoya and Nagisa since episode 8, the happiness of the start of their life, the sadness of the loss, the happiness with Ushio…
The last few episode were completely heart-breaking.
It completely destroyed me when Ushio said that this robot was important because it’s the first thing she got from Dad, when she says that she can only cry in Daddy’s arms and that she wants to, combined with her cuteness, it destroyed me, I could’nt stop my tears (even though I didn’t cry watching Air)… T.T
No matter how many times I watch it, I can only cry…
I cried once again when she explains Fuko about his mom in episode 20, and when we see how much Tomoya still love Nagisa, and do love Ushio.
If KyoAni do a bad end for Tomoya and Ushio, I won’t be able stand it…
I will cry every night for at least two weeks.
But I hope they wont, nobody can do something like that to such a wonderful little girl… I hope so…
Concerning Nagisa, I love her, I don’t want to see a story between Tomoya and one of the others girls from season 1, but I don’t really want Nagisa to come back, it would destroy everything the anime set in place during the last episode, the relation between Ushio and Tomoya, I think as “the deceased mother” (it kill me to write that T.T), she still has an important role in the story.
Besides, like ithekro says, the story is now gonna be focus on Ushio and Tomoya.
Anyway, Clannad season 1 was good, but not on the same level that the others KyoAni for me (Air, Kanon), but Clannad AS is the best thing they have ever made.
It’s when watching this kind of anime that I love the japanim.
Clannad AS FTW! T.T
Have a good day, mina (because mine is gonna be teary T.T)
I cried when Tomoya started singing the Dango song.
“You know, it’s hilarious how every single Kyou rabid fanboy still thinks that Tomoya is going to end with Kyou.”
Ok, let’s clarify: I am a Kyou fanboy (whether I am rabid or not is left to your appreciation), I wish that Tomoya would end up with her, but it wouldn’t make any sense in the show for it to happen.
That being out of the way, about bringing Nagisa back to life…
It is sad that Nagisa died. It is sad that Tomoya never had the life he should have had with her and Ushio.
However, in my understanding, Clannad is also about coping with life, doing your best with the cards you are dealt with (even when these cards spell illness or death). And I can’t help but think that bringing Nagisa back to life after five years would be “too much”.
I think this may have been our good ending
http://subculture.animeblogger.net/images/clannad/clannadafter20_12.jpg
but..a couple more episodes then we will know
A Kyou route would have made Clannad even better.
It’s when watching this kind of anime that I love the japanim.
It also doesn’t hurt to tell a great story, and to have great artwork and animation.
The artwork for this anime is impressive, no doubt. Gotta rewatch this again. Oo
