About
I’ve been getting tired of my about page looking so messy, so I’ve decided to organize it like one of those cheesy mission statements they have at school and stuff.
Subculture’s Mission
1. To aid in my study of the Japanese Language - I originally started this blog purely as a project to help me study Japanese in my free time. I’ve been anime blogging for quite a few months, and studying Japanese for even longer. Looking back at my progress, I realize that I’ve actually learned quite a lot. You can probably look through the archives to see how much my writing has improved as well (actually, don’t. Hazukashi desu!!). I’ve gotten to the point where I can understand quite clearly what is going on in a RAW episode, though I may look up a few words every now and then. This has become much more of a hobby for me, but I still find studying Japanese very fun. I have moved on to learning the written language, though it’s moving at a much slower pace.
2. To spread the joy of love comedies! - Although my favorites list is full of meaningful psychological and slice of life anime, the genre I watch the most is the easy going love comedy. I just have a strange taste these kinds of shows, and I never get tired of them in any season. Because of that, I can always jump into an episode right when it comes out, whereas I tend to hold off on other shows even while they’re airing. I’ll try to pick up most of the love comedies in a season, but I may miss a few. There’s only so much anime I can blog.
3. To participate in the Anime Blogging community - Something I find even more fun than writing about the anime I watch is reading other peoples’ thoughts on them. I love reading other anime blogs and finding new ones. You’ll constantly find me posting on other blogs, especially since I watch more shows than I blog. I occasionally read editorials as well, but I tend to try staying away from the “anime is serious business” thing. In fact, my favorite blogs tend to be the ones are easy to read and make me laugh. If your blog posts on random things that are different from the ordinary, it’ll probably make my favorites list.
4. To cover shows that no one else is covering - If a show is not a love comedy, I will tend to let other bloggers handle it unless I am very interested in it. However, like I said before, I watch a lot of other kinds of anime too. If no one is writing about an anime that I am enjoying, I might feel like it deserves coverage. Hopefully this can help people who are not as good with the language or those who just want some coverage on a show they are watching.
5. To reveal the wonders of life, through slice of life! - After a few self declared “slice of life seasons” for Subculture, I have decided to start covering my favorite genre a bit more. I originally held off on doing this as I thought the fanbase was large enough, but I have recently found that this is not true when it comes to episodic coverage. Besides, I have also found that I love talking about these types of shows.
I’ll add more to this as I find it necessary. Hopefully this makes my about page look a bit cleaner for now.
About the Author

So I thought I’d write a bit about myself too. This blog is currently being run solely by me, Totali. Despite my great interest in love comedies, I am actually a guy. Looking around my site, you probably have a good idea of what I typically watch, but I also enjoy the psychological, slice of life, and mecha genres quite a bit. Those are my favorites, but I will watch almost any kind of anime. My tastes are pretty broad despite what my blog coverage suggests. I’ve been watching anime on and off for as far as I can remember, growing up on shows like Dragonball Z, Gundam Wing, Outlaw Star, and Techi Muyo. I stopped watching anime for a few years in favor of console and computer games like DOA, Armored Core, Final Fantasy, WC3, WoW, etc. (If anyone really wants to know, I obtained High Warlord status in WoW. Yes, give me back the year of my life that I lost). I guess you could say that my interest in anime returned in a much bigger way after that. I’ve spent hours watching thousands of episodes of anime from hundreds of series, and I now run a freaking anime blog.
Even though I have a huge love of anime, I don’t know if I could call myself an otaku. My interest in digital media, technology, and music (non anime) is just as great. The most memorable moment of my life so far has been seeing Nine Inch Nails in concert, I am a Mac user, and I have been interested in web and graphic design for years. I am entering college as a digital media student, and it isn’t for animation. If you saw me outside, you would probably never guess that I was an anime fan. I tend to not talk about it outside of the interwebz either. Who knows, maybe I’m just a closet otaku. Despite all of this, I don’t think my interest in anime or Japanese culture will ever die out. Something that I’ve always said is that asians are drawn to asian things. Oh and yes, I am azn.
